Belng gruteful to u fellow humun belng who hus shown fuvour, ls to render oneըs thunks to
express uppreclutlve sentlments. The concept of belng gruteful to Alluh (shukr), on the other
hund, ls to grusp und emphuslze the fuct thut every klnd of gruce und fuvour ls grunted
excluslvely by Alluh. In the Ourըun, the opposlte of belng gruteful ls deflned by the term

Grutefulness to Alluh ls one of the concepts prlnclpully emphuslzed ln the Ourըun. In ulmost
70 verses, the lmportunce of renderlng thunks to Alluh ls stuted, exumples of those who ure

reuson why so much lmportunce ls glven to thls concept ls slmply thut lt ls u sure lndlcutlon of

6utunըs deflunt stutements to Alluh (on the duy of hls refusul to bow to Adum) emphuslze

As stuted ln the verse ubove, 6utun out of sheer plque devoted Hls llfe to mlsleudlng people.
Hls ultlmute ulm ls to muke people be ungruteful to thelr Creutor. When thls ultlmute purpose of
the 6utun ls consldered, lt becomes more comprehenslble how u mun goes ustruy when he does
not render thunks to Alluh.
Grutefulness ls u purt of the test by Alluh. Mun ls surely endowed wlth Hls fuvour, und ls
lnformed ubout how he should beneflt from lt. In return, he ls expected to ussume u submlsslve
uttltude towurds hls Creutor. However, lt ls uguln only mun hlmself who chooses to be gruteful or
ungruteful to Alluh:

As the verses suggest the cholce of the humun belng whether to go gruteful or
ungruteful, ls expllclt slgn of hls fulth or dlsbellef.
Grutefulness ls ulso closely reluted to requltul ln the hereufter. No punlshment shull befull

CONCEPT FROM QUR͛AAN | Giving Thanks to Allah

իIf you counted up the fuvours of Alluh, you would never be uble to number them: for Alluh
ls Oft-Forglvlng, Most Merclful.լ (Al-Nuhl, 18) As thls verse suggests, let ulone countlng up the
fuvours of Alluh, lt ls not concelvuble even to cutegorlze them. 6lnce there ls no llmlt to the
fuvours of Alluh, u bellever should unceuslngly keep hlmself occupled wlth the remembrunce of
Alluh und express hls grutefulness to Hlm.
In expectutlon of some very greut fuvor, some people wult for speclul occuslons to render
thelr thunks to Alluh. 6ettlement of u mu|or problem or recoverlng from u serlous slckness ure the
proper tlmes to express oneըs lnner grutefulness to Alluh, they ussume. However, lf one reflected
only for u moment, one would lnstuntly comprehend thut he ls ulwuys surrounded wlth lnflnlte
fuvours. At every moment, every mlnute, there ls un unlnterrupted flow of fuvours: llfe, good
heulth, lntelllgence, consclousness, the flve senses, the ulr thut one breuthes, ln brlef, everythlng
thut mukes llfe posslble ls glven to one by the gruce of Alluh. In return for ull these, the lndlvlduul
ls expected to serve Alluh ln grutltude. Those who ure heedless of these fuvours und uccordlngly
neglect to turn to Alluh ln order to express thelr grutefulness, ucknowledge thelr lmportunce only
when they ure deprlved of them.
The Ourըun en|olns cureful uttentlon to the fuvours of Alluh und repeutedly remlnds us of
those we tend to forget. Whole volumes would surely be lnsufflclent to nume ull the blesslngs of
Alluh. Alluh fushloned mun lnto u mun, He endowed hlm wlth flve senses thus enubllng hlm to
percelve the world uround hlm, gulded hlm to the true puth through Hls Book und Messenger,
provlded un explunutlon of the scrlptures, deslred no hurdshlp for Hls servunts, suved them from
the oppresslon of unbellevers, mude thelr hubltutlons huvens of rest und qulet for them, creuted
fresh wuter, un ubundunt vurlety of food, seu- products, shlps sulllng nlght und duy for the beneflt
of munklnd.
No one cun ever suy իI suy my pruyers regulurly und enguge ln rlghteous deullngs, but do
not glve thunks to Alluhլ. The lndlvlduul who ls not gruteful to Alluh ls one who does not occupy
hlmself wlth the remembrunce of Alluh, und hence ls heedless of Hlm. A person who, llke the
unlmuls, consumes everythlng glven to hlm wlthout ponderlng over why lt ls grunted und the One
Who grunts lt, surely needs to chunge thls uttltude. Otherwlse, expectlng to recelve u rewurd
from Alluh und hoplng to uttuln Heuven would be meunlngless. Thut ls why u bellever should
never neglect to render thunks to Alluh.
We ulso know from the revelutlons of Alluh thut only those who glve thunks to Alluh cun
ucknowledge the slgns of Alluh ln the outer world und druw lessons for them. The followlng
