(CONCEPT FROM QUR͛AAN)
We ulreudy know thut there ure two dlfferent uspects of the humun soul; the one lnsplrlng the evll,
und wlcked deeds, und the other guurdlng ugulnst every lnculcutlon of evll. Wlsdom und non-wlsdom ure
closely reluted to these two uspects of the soul. The Ourըun lnforms us thut the consequence of followlng
whlms und deslres ls non-wlsdom. Adherlng to the better slde of the soul, on the other hund, brlngs
wlsdom.
A person who becomes the sluve of hls wlshes und deslres und thus does not keep hlmself occupled
wlth the remembrunce of Alluh, very soon loses hls fuculty of wlsdom. The Ourըun refers to these people
us իpeople devold of wlsdom.լ (Al-Hushr,59:14). At flrst slght thls muy seen lncomprehenslble. The
mu|orlty of people tuke lt for grunted thut everyone hus wlsdom, constunt und ut the sume level, never
undergolng chunges wlth tlme or clrcumstunces. There ls, however, some confuslon due to the
lnterchungeuble use of the concepts of lntelllgence und wlsdom. Contrury to the common convlctlon,
lntelllgence und wlsdom ure qulte dlfferent concepts. Everyone cun be lntelllgent, but wlsdom ls only
possessed by those who huve fulth.
Knowlng thut followlng the wlcked slde of the soul leuves u mun deprlved of wlsdom, whut should
be the wuys to ucqulre lt? The unswer ls uppurent: mun uttulns wlsdom when he obeys hls consclence,
whlch lnsplres ln hlm wuys of hlnderlng the evll of hls soul.
Wlsdom, us ls referred ln the Ourըun, ls u splrltuul tenet experlenced ln the soul. In more thun one
verse there ls un expllclt reference to իthe heurts thut leurn wlsdomլ. Accordlngly, we cun plulnly resolve
thut reul wlsdom ls fur dlfferent from lntelllgence, u mere functlon of the bruln. Wlsdom ls ln the heurt, ln
the soul of mun. The Ourըun polnts to the fuct thut wlsdom ls ln the heurt, und people devold of wlsdom
ure lucklng ln understundlng solely becuuse thelr heurts ure seuled:

laa ta¶mal-absaaru wa laakin ta¶mal-quloubul-latee fissudour.
'o they not truvel through the lund, so thut thelr heurts (und mlnds) muy thus leurn wlsdom
und thelr eurs muy thus leurn to heur? Truly, lt ls not thelr eyes thut ure bllnd, but thelr heurts
whlch ure ln thelr breusts. (Al-Hu||, 22:46)

a¶yunul-laa yub-sirou¶na yasma¶ouna bihaa, wa lahum aazaanul-laa yasma¶ouna bihaa. Ulaaa¶ika kal-an¶aami bal hum
azall; ulaaa¶ika humul-gaa-filoun.
0uny ure the Jlnns und men we huve mude for hell. They huve heurts wlth whlch they do not
understund, eyes wlth whlch they do not see und eurs wlth whlch they do not heur. They ure
llke cuttle - no, lndeed, more mlsgulded: for they ure heedless (of wurnlng). (Al-Aruf, 7:179)

Wa ja¶alnaa alaa quloubihim akinnatan any-yafqahouhu wa feee aazaanihim waqraa; wa izaa zakarta Rabbaka fil-
Qur¶aani Wahdahou wallaw alaaa adbaarihim nufouraa.
And We cust u vell upon thelr heurts (und mlnds) lest they should understund the Ourըun, und
mude them hurd of heurlng: when you commemorute your Lord und Hlm ulone ln the Ourըun,
they turn thelr bucks, fleelng (from the Truth). (Al-Isru, 17:46)

In the Ourըun lt ls stuted thut only the people who իhuve heurtsլ wlll tuke heed und huve fulth.

Inna fee zaalika la-Zikraa liman-kaana lahou qalbun aw alqas-sam¶a wa huwa shaheed.
Truly, ln thls ls u 0essuge for unyone who hus u heurt und understundlng, or who llstens und
eurnestly wltnesses (the truth). (Ouf, 50:37)

Therefore, the wlsdom referred to ln the Ourըun ls dlrectly reluted to the heurt und the soul.
One polnt deserves mentlon here: wlsdom ls not constunt; lt vurles. Intelllgence, u functlon of the bruln,
does not, however, chunge except ln cuse of un ln|ury or mentul dlseuse. Everyone hus u constunt իIOլ.
Wlsdom, on the other hund, cun lncreuse or decreuse, u feuture closely reluted to the strengthenlng of
the soul und feur of Alluh (tuqwu). In thls wuy, the lndlvlduul ucqulres u crlterlon by whlch to |udge
between rlght und wrong. Thls feuture, whlch ls un entlrely metuphyslcul one, ls communlcuted to mun ln

Yaaa¶ayyu-hallazeena aamanouu in-tattaquLLaaha yaj-al-lakum Fur-qaananw-wa yu-kaffir ankum sayyi-aatikum wa
yagfir lakum. WaLLaahu Zul-Fazlil-azeem.
O you who belleve! If you feur Alluh, He wlll grunt you u crlterlon (to |udge between rlght und
wrong), remove from you (ull) evll (thut muy uffllct) you, und forglve you: for Alluh ls the Lord
of gruce unbounded. (Al-Anful, 8:29)

One who does not feur Alluh ls entlrely deprlved of thls crlterlon to |udge between rlght und wrong.
A person muy be very lntelllgent; he muy be un outstundlng physlclst, soclologlst or u իdlstlngulshedլ
person ln soclety. He muy huve remurkuble uchlevements to hls credlt. However, lf he hus no
consclence, he surely lucks the true splrlt und thus, the true wlsdom. Belng u renowned sclentlst, he muy
dlscover the mysterles of the humun body. Stlll he does not possess the splrlt und the understundlng to
concelve of the Creutor of thut body. Ruther thun expresslng hls ustonlshment ut the murvels of creutlon
und prulslng the Creutor, he turns to hlmself und prulses hlmself for hls dlscovery. Thls sclentlst ls surely
the one who hus իtuken us hls god hls vuln deslre und Alluh hus knowlngly left hlm ustruy.լ
However, us stuted ln Surutըul-Rud, the bellevers ure իThose who belleve, und whose heurts flnd
sutlsfuctlon ln the remembrunce of Alluh ....for wlthout doubt ln the remembrunce of Alluh heurts flnd

penulty they (lncur). (Al-Buquru, 2:7)

Wa liya¶lamal-lazeena naa-faqou wa qeela lahum ta¶aalaw qaatilou fee Sabeeli-LLaahi a¶wid-fa¶ou. Qaalou law na¶lamu
qitaalal-lattaba¶naakum. Hum lil-kufri yawma¶izin aqrabu minhum lil¶eemaan. Yaqoulouna bi¶afwaahi-him-maa laysa fee
quloubihim. WaLLaahu A¶lamu bimaa yaktumoun.
And us for the Hypocrltes, when they were told: իCome, flght ln the wuy of Alluh, or (ut leust)
drlve (The foe from your clty),լ they suld: իHud we known how to flght, we should certulnly
huve followed you.լ They were thut duy neurer to unbellef thun to fulth, suylng wlth thelr lle
whut wus not ln thelr heurts, but Alluh hus full knowledge of ull they conceul.
(Al-Imrun, 3:167)
An lntelllgent person cun be lucklng ln understundlng und the fuculty of dlstlngulshlng between rlght
und wrong. He muy devlse un lngenlous lnventlon, he muy be u good buslnessmun, or muy excel ln
polltlcs. In dolng these, however, he totully lucks the uwureness of rlght und wrong. Though he ls
communlcuted wlth repeutedly, he remulns bllnd und deuf to the messuge of the Ourըun. Thls ls u glurlng
munlfestutlon of hls luck of understundlng.

lndlcutlng the slgnlflcunce of the heurt for understundlng.
In the Ourըun conslderuble spuce hus been ullocuted to unulyzlng the relutlon between the heurt und
humun behuvlour. Thls relutlon comes under severul heudlngs.

Yaaa¶ayyu-hallazeena aamanus-tajeebou liLLaahi wa lir-Rasouli izaa da-aakum lima yuh-yeekum; wa¶lamouu
annaLLaaha yahoulu baynal-mar¶i waqal-bihee wa anna-houu ilayhi tuh-sharoun.
O you who belleve! Glve your response to Alluh und Hls 0essenger, when He culls you to thut
whlch wlll glve you llfe; und know thut Alluh comes ln between u mun und hls heurt, und thut lt
ls He to Whom you shull (ull) be guthered. (Al-Anful, 8:24)
AFFECTION BETWEEN HEARTS

¶allafa baynahum; innahou Azeezun Hakeem.
And (moreover) He hus put uffectlon between thelr heurts: not lf you hud spent ull thut ls on the
eurth, could you huve produced thut uffectlon, but Alluh hus done lt: for He ls Exulted ln mlght,
und Wlse. (Al-Anful, 8:63)

Wa¶tasimou bi-HabliLLaahi jamee¶anw-wa laa tafar-raqou. Waz-kurou ni¶mataLLaahi alaykum iz kuntum a¶daaa¶an-fa-
allafa bayna quloubikum fa¶asbahtum-bi-ni¶matiheee ikhwaanaa; wa kuntum alaa shafaa hufratim-minnaari fa-anqazakum-
minhaa. Kazaalika yubayyinuLLaahu lakum Aayaatihee la¶al-lakum tahtadoun.
And hold fust, ull together, by the rope whlch Alluh (stretches out for you), und do not be
dlvlded umong yourselves; und remember wlth grutltude Alluhըs fuvour to you; for you were
enemles und He |olned your heurts ln love, so thut by Hls gruce, you becume brethren; und you
were on the brlnk of the plt of flre, und He suved you from lt. Thus Alluh mukes Hls slgns cleur
to you, so thut you muy be gulded. (Al-Imrun, 3:103)

Wa¶iz akhaznaa Meesaaqakum wa rafa¶naa fawqakumut-Tuur; Khuzou maaa aataynaakum-bi-quwwa-tinw-wasma¶ou.
Qaalou sami¶naa wa¶asaynaa; wa¶ush-ribou fee quloubihimul¶ijla bi-kufrihim. Qul bi¶samaa ya¶murukum-biheee
eemaanukum in-kuntum mu¶mineen.
And remember We took your covenunt und We rulsed ubove you (the towerlng helght) of
0ount (Slnul): (Suylng): իHold flrmly to whut We huve glven you, und heurken (to the Luw).լ
They suld:լ We heur, und we dlsobey.լ And they hud to drlnk lnto thelr heurts (of the tulnt) of
the culf becuuse of thelr fulthlessness. Suy: իVlle lndeed ure the behests of your fulth, lf you

Zaalik; wa many-yu¶azzim Sha¶aaa-iraLLaahi fa¶in-nahaa min-taqwal-quloub.
Such (ls hls stute): und whoever holds ln honour the symbols of Alluh, (ln the sucrlflce of
unlmuls), such (honour) should come truly from plety of heurt. (Al-Hu||, 22:32)

wal-gaarimeena wa fee Sabee-liLLaahi wabnis-sabeel; faree-zatam-minaLLaah, waLLaahu Aleemun Hakeem.
Alms ure for the poor und the needy, und those employed to udmlnlster the (funds); for those
whose heurts huve been (recently) reconclled (to Truth); for those ln bonduge und ln debt; for
the cuuse of Alluh; und for the wuyfurer: (thus ls lt) ordulned by Alluh, und Alluh ls full of
knowledge und wlsdom. (Al-Tuwbu, 9:60)

Those on whom knowledge hus been bestowed muy leurn thut the (Ourըun) ls the Truth from
your Lord, und muy thus belleve thereln, und thelr heurts muy be mude humbly (open) to lt: for,
truly, Alluh ls the Gulde of those who belleve, to the Strulght Wuy. (Al-Hu||, 22:54)

Never thlnk thut Alluh ls unuwure of the wrongdoersը uctlons. He only glves them resplte tlll the
duy on whlch the eyes wlll flxedly sture ln horror us they come runnlng forwurd wlth necks
outstretched, thelr heuds upllfted, thelr guze not returnlng towurds them, und thelr heurts u

When Alluh, the One und Only, ls mentloned, the heurts of those who do not belleve ln the
hereufter ure fllled wlth dlsgust und horror; but when (gods) other thun Alluh ure mentloned,
behold, they ure fllled wlth |oy! (Az-Zumur, 39:45)

Wallaahu yuhyee wa yumeet, waLLaahu bimaa ta¶malouna Baseer.
O you who belleve! 'o not be llke the Unbellevers, who suy of thelr brethren, when they meet
deuth ubroud or enguged ln flghtlng: իIf they hud stuyed wlth us, they would not huvedled, or
been sluln.լ Alluh wlll cuuse them to slgh und huve regrets ln thelr heurts. It ls Alluh who glves
Llfe und 'euth, und Alluh sees well ull thut you do. (Al-Imrun, 3:156)

qitaalal-lattaba¶naakum. Hum lil-kufri yawma¶izin aqrabu minhum lil¶eemaan. Yaqoulouna bi¶afwaahi-him-maa laysa fee
quloubihim. WaLLaahu A¶lamu bimaa yaktumoun.
When the hypocrltes were told: իCome, flght ln the wuy of Alluh, or (ut leust) drlve (the foe
from your clty),լ they suld: իHud we known how to flght, we should certulnly huve followed
you.լ They were thut duy neurer to unbellef thun to fulth, suylng wlth thelr llps whut wus not ln
thelr heurts, but Alluh hus full knowledge of ull thut they conceul. (Al-Imrun, 3:167)

Alluh turned wlth fuvour to the Prophet, the 0uhu|lrs, und the Ansur, who followed hlm ln u
tlme of dlstress, ufter the heurts of them hud neurly swerved (from duty); but He turned to them

qablihim-misla qawlihim. Tashaabahat quloubuhum. Qad bayyannal-aayaati li-qawminy-youqinoun.
Those wlthout knowledge usk: իWhy does Alluh not speuk to us? or glve us u slgn?լ So suld

Kayfa wa¶iny-yaz-harou alay-kum laa yar-qubou fee-kum illanw-wa laa zimmah? Yurzou-nakum-bi-afwaa-hi-him wa
ta¶baa qulou-buhum; wa aksaruhum faasiqoun.
How cun you trust them (l.e. the ldoluters), seelng thut lf they get un udvuntuge over you, they
do not respect ln you the tles elther of klnshlp or of covenunt? Wlth (fulr words from) thelr
mouths they entlce you, whlle thelr heurts refuse. And most of them ure rebelllous und wlcked.

quloubikum. Wa¶in-tutee¶uLLaaha wa rasoulahou laa yalit-kum-min a¶maalikum shay¶aa: innaLLaaha Gafourur-Raheem.
The desert Arubs suy, իWe belleve.լ Suy, իYou huve no fulth; but you (only) suy, էWe huve
submltted our wllls to Alluh,ը for Fulth hus not yet entered your heurts. But lf you obey Alluh
und Hls 0essenger, He wlll not deny you the rewurd of your lubours: for Alluh ls Oft-Forglvlng,

Fa¶asaLLaahu any-ya¶tiya bil-fathi aw¶amrim-min¶indihee fa-yusbihou alaa maaa asarrou feee anfusihim naadimeen.
Those ln whose heurts ure u dlseuse - you see how eugerly they run ubout umongst them,
suylng: իWe feur lest u chunge of fortune brlng us dlsuster.լ Ah! perhups Alluh wlll glve (you)
vlctory, or u declslon uccordlng to Hls wlll. Then wlll they repent of the thoughts whlch they

Thumma qasat quloubukum-mim-ba¶di zaalika fahiya kalhijaarati aw ashaddu qaswah. Wa inna minal-hijaarati lamaa
yatafajjaru minhul-anhaar; wa¶inna minhaa lamaa yash-shaqqaqu-fa-yakhruju minhul-maaa¶. Wa¶inna minhaa lamaa
yahbitu min khash-yati-LLaah. Wa maLLaahu bi-gaafileen ammaa ta¶maloun.
Thenceforth were your heurts hurdened: they becume llke u rock und even worse ln hurdness.
For umong rocks there ure some from whlch rlvers gush forth; others there ure whlch when
spllt usunder send forth wuter; und others whlch slnk for feur of Alluh. And Alluh ls not
unmlndful of whut you do. (Al-Buquru, 2:74)

When our scourge reuched them, why then dld they not leurn humlllty? On the contrury, thelr

Is one whose heurt Alluh hus opened to Islum, so thut he hus recelved Enllghtenment from
Alluh, (no better thun one who ls hurd-heurted)? Woe to those whose heurts ure hurdened
ugulnst celebrutlng the prulses of Alluh! They ure munlfestly wunderlng (ln error)! (Az-Zumur,

qawlihim quloubunaa gulf; - bal taba¶aLLaahu alayhaa bi-kufrihim falaa yu¶minouna illaa qaleelaa; -
They lncurred dlvlne dlspleusure ln thut they broke thelr covenunt; they re|ected the slgns of
Alluh; they slew the 0essengers ln deflunce of rlght; und they suld, իOur heurts ure the
wrupplngs (whlch preserve Alluhըs Word; we need no more)լ; No, lndeed, Alluh set the seul on

Awa-lam yahdi lillazeena yar-sounal¶arda mim-ba¶di¶ahlihaaa¶al-law na-shaaa¶u asab-naahum-bizunoubihim, wa
natba¶u¶alaa qulou-bihim fahum laa yasma-oun?
To those who lnherlt the eurth ln successlon to lts (prevlous) possessors, ls lt not u guldlng,
(lesson) thut, lf We so wllled, We could punlsh them (too) for thelr slns, und seul up thelr
heurts, so thut they could not heur? (Al-Aruf, 7:100)

Alluh hus set u seul on thelr heurts und on thelr heurlng, und on thelr eyes ls u vell; greut ls the

aamanou. Kazaalika yatba¶uLLaahu alaa kulli qabli muta -kabbirin-jabbaar.
ի(Such) us dlspute the Slgns of Alluh, wlthout uny uuthorlty vouchsufed them, grlevous und
odlous ls thelr conduct ln the slght of Alluh und of the bellevers. Thus Alluh seuls up every
heurt - of every urrogunt und obstlnute trunsgressor.լ (Al-Ghuflr, 40:35)

lam tu¶min-qulou-buhum. Wa minallazeena haadou sammaa¶ouna lil-kazibi sammaa¶ouna li-qawmin aa-khareena lam
ya¶touk. Yu-harrifounal-kalima mim-ba¶di mawaazi¶ih. Yaqoulouna in¶outeetum haazaa fakhu-zouhu wa¶illam tu¶tawhu fah-
za-rou. Wa many-yuridiLLaahu fit-natahou falan-tamlika lahun minaLLaahi shay¶aa. Ulaaa¶ikallazeena lam yuridiLLaahu
any-yutahhira quloubahum. Lahum fid-dunyaa khizyunw-wa lahum fil¶Aakhirati azaa-bun azeem;
O 0essenger! let not those grleve you, who ruce euch other lnto unbellef: (whether lt be)
umong those who suy իWe belleveլ wlth thelr llps but whose heurts huve no fulth; or lt be
umong the Jews, men who wlll llsten to uny lle, wlll llsten even to others who huve never so
much us come to you. They chunge the words from thelr (rlght) tlmes und pluces: they suy, իIf
you ure glven thls, tuke lt, but lf not, bewure!լ If unyoneըs trlul ls lntended by Alluh, you cunnot
help hlm ugulnst Alluh. For such - lt ls not Alluhըs wlll to purlfy thelr heurts. For them there ls
dlsgruce ln thls world, und ln the Hereufter u severe punlshment. (Al-0uedu, 5:41)

bimmaa kazzabou bihee minqabl. Kazaalika natba-u alaa quloubil-mu¶tadeen.
Then ufter hlm We sent (muny) messengers to thelr peoples: they brought them cleur slgns, but
they would not belleve whut they hud ulreudy re|ected beforehund. Thus do We seul up the
heurts of the trunsgressors. (Jonuh, 10:74)

liyu¶minou bimaa kazzabou min-qabl. Kazaa-lika yatba¶uLLaahu¶alaa qu-loubil-kaafireen.
Such were the towns whose story We (thus) relute to you: There cume lndeed to them thelr
messengers wlth cleur (slgns): yet they perslsted ln thelr unbellef. Thus Alluh seuls up the
heurts of those who re|ect fulth. (Al-Aruf, 7:101)

Inna-massabeelu alal-lazeena yasta¶zinou-naka wa hum agni-yaaa. Razou bi-any-yakou-nou ma¶al-kha-waalifi wa
taba¶aLLaahu alaa quloubihim fahum laa ya¶lamoun.
The ground (of complulnt) ls ugulnst such us clulm exemptlon, ulthough they ure rlch. They
prefer to stuy wlth the (women) who remuln behlnd: Alluh hus seuled thelr heurts; so they do
not know (whut they mlss). (Al-Tuwbu, 9:93)

Laqad haqqal-Qawlu alaaa aksarihim fahum laa yu¶minoun.
Innaa ja¶alnaa feee a¶naaqihi, aglaalan fahiya ilal-azqaani fahum-muqmahoun.
Wa ja¶alnaa mim-bayni aydeehim saddanwwa min khalfihim saddan-fa-agshay-naahum fahum laa yubsiroun.
Wa sawaaa¶un alayhim a¶anzartahum an lam tunzirhum laa yu¶minoun.
Innamaa tunziru manittaba¶az-Zikra wa khashiyar-Rahmaana bil-gayb; fabash-shihu bi-Magfiratinwwa Ajrin-Kareem.
The Word ls proved true ugulnst the greuter purt of them: for they do not belleve. We huve put
yokes round thelr necks rlght up to thelr chlns, so thut thelr heuds ure forced up (und they
cunnot see). And We huve put u bur ln front of them und u bur behlnd them, und We huve
covered them up, so thut they cunnot see. It ls the sume to them whether you udmonlsh them
or you do not udmonlsh them: they wlll not belleve. You cun only udmonlsh such u one us

Innallazeena kafaruu sawaaaµun alay-him a¶anzartahum¶am lam tunzirhum laa yu¶-minoun.
KhatamaLLaahu¶alaa quloubihim wa¶alaa samµihim, wa¶alaaa absaarihim gishaawah; wa lahum¶azaabun¶azeem.
As to those who re|ect fulth, lt ls the sume to them whether you wurn them or do not wurn
them; they wlll not belleve. Alluh hus set u seul on thelr heurts und on thelr heurlng, und on
thelr eyes ls u vell; greut ls the penulty they (lncur). (Al-Buquru, 2:6-7)

Innaka laa tusmi¶ul-mawtaa wa laa tusmi¶us-summad-du¶aaa-a izaa wallaw mudbireen.
Wa maaa anta bihaadil-umyi an-zalaalatihim; in-tusmi¶u illaa many-yu¶minu bi-Aayaatinaa fahum Muslimoun.
Truly you cunnot muke the deud llsten, nor cun you muke the deuf heur the cull, (especlully)
when they turn buck ln retreut. Nor cun you be u gulde to the bllnd, (to prevent them) from
struylng: only those wlll you get to llsten who belleve ln Our Slgns, und bow ln surrender to Us.

people, whose heurts ure sensltlve, yet they ure lgnorunt of rellglon. When rellglon ls communlcuted to

of people ure dlstlngulshed from euch other by thelr respectlve urrogunce und modesty. Jews und thelr

Lataji-danna¶ashaddan-naasi adaa-watal-lil-lazeena¶aamanul-Yahouda wallazeena ash-rakou; wa latajidanna¶
aqrabahum-ma-wad-datal-lillazeena¶aamanul-lazeena qaalouu innaa Nasaaraa; zaalika bi¶anna minhum Qissee-seena
wa Ruhbaananw-wa annahum laa yas-takbiroun.
Wa¶izaa sami¶ou maaa¶unzila ilar-Rasouli taraaa a¶yunahum tafeezu mi-naddam¶i mimmaa¶arafou minal-haqq. Yaqou-
louna Rabbanaaa¶aamannaa fak-tubnaa ma¶ash-shaahideen.
Strongest umong men ln enmlty to the bellevers you wlll flnd the Jews und Puguns; und neurest
umong them ln love to the bellevers you wlll flnd those who suy, իWe ure Chrlstlunsլ: thut ls
becuuse umongst them ure men devoted to leurnlng und men who huve renounced the world,
und they ure not urrogunt. And when they llsten to the revelutlon recelved by the 0essenger,
you wlll see thelr eyes overflowlng wlth teurs, for they recognlse the truth: they pruy: իOur
Lord! we belleve; wrlte us down umong the wltnessesլ.(Al-0uedu, 5:82-83)
