Idolutry does not essentlully requlre un ubsolute denlul of the exlstence of Alluh. Ruther, the mu|orlty
of the ldoluters uvold expllcltly ucceptlng such un uttrlbute or իtltleլ. Never scrupulous ln conduct, they
decelve themselves throughout thelr llves. On the Duy of Judgment, they stlll re|ect belng lnvolved ln

Thumma lam takun-fitnatuhum illaaa¶an qaalou waLLaahi Rabbinaa maa kunnaa mushrikeen.
Unzur kayfa kazabou alaaa¶anfusihim wa zalla¶anhum-maa kaanou yaftaroun.
One duy shull We guther them ull together: We shull suy to thos e who uscrlbed purtners (to Us): իWhere
ure the purtners whom you (lnvented und) tulked ubout?լ There wlll then be (left) no subterfuge for them
but to suy: իBy Alluh, our Lord, we were not those who ussocluted other gods wlth Alluh.լ Behold! How
they lle ugulnst thelr own souls! But the (lle) whlch they lnvented wlll leuve them ln the lurch. (ul-Anuէum,
6:22-24)

the wlll of some person over the Wlll of Alluh, for lnstunce, feur of other people ruther thun feur of Alluh, or

Wa minannaasi many-yattakhizu min-douniLLaahi andaadany-yuhibbounahum ka-hubb iLLaah. Wallazeena aamanou a¶shaddu
hubballiLLaah. Wa law yarallazeena zalamou iz yarawnal-azaaba annal-Quwwata liLLaahi jamee-anw-wa annaLLaaha Shadeedul-azaab.
Yet there ure men who tuke (for worshlp) others besldes Alluh, us equul (wlth Alluh): They love them us
they should love Alluh. But those of the Fulth ure overflowlng ln thelr love for Alluh. If only the unrlghteous
could see, behold, they would see the penulty: thut to Alluh belongs ull power, und Alluh wlll sternly
enforce the penulty. (Suruh Al-Buquru, 2:165)

thun Alluhլ us well us ldolutry. Unllke bellevers, unbellevers cun never mulntuln un lntlmute relutlon wlth
thelr Creutor. They love elther themselves or others, or both; they shure out thelr love umong thelr futhers,
sons, brothers, wlves, husbunds, lovers, the people they ure surrounded by, und so on. As well us for
people, unbellevers feel uttuchment for non-llvlng thlngs, or ruther concepts llke money, possesslons,
houses, curs, stutus, prestlge, etc.
The superlor und gorgeous propertles of ull llvlng thlngs und non-llvlng thlngs ullke ure mere
reflectlons of the lnflnlte uttrlbutes of Alluh. The unlque possessor of these feutures ls Alluh und therefore
the only One worthy of loyulty, devotlon und love. Feellng un uttuchment then for unythlng other thun Alluh
ls mere ussoclutlon of purtners wlth Alluh.
In unother verse, ln the words of Prophet Abruhum, lt ls usserted thut unbellevers leuve Alluh und
strengthen the bond wlth thelr ldols:

Wa qaala innamatta-khaztum-min-douniLLaahi awsaanam-mawaddata baynikum fil-hayaatid-dunyaa; thumma yawmal-qiyaamati
yakfuru ba¶zukum-biba¶zinwwa yal-anu ba¶zukum ba¶zaa; wa ma¶waakumun-Naaru wa maa lakum min-naasireen.
And he suld: իYou huve tuken (for worshlp) ldols besldes Alluh, out of mutuul love und regurd between
yourselves ln thls llfe; but on the Duy of Judgment you shull dlsown und curse euch other: und your ubode
wlll be the Flre, und you shull huve none to help you.լ (Al-Ankuboot, 29:25)

Such u mentullty, ussumed to be lnnocent behuvlour ln soclety, hus serlous consequences, however, ln the
presence of Alluh:

Iny-yad-ouna min-dounihee illaaa inaasaa; wa iny-yad¶ouna illaa Shaytaanam-mareedaa.

իdutlng.լ The lndoctrlnutlon of romuntlclsm- especlully turgetlng young peopleդhus devustutlng effects
upon new generutlons. Thls ls surely u greut hlndrunce to the heulthy development of the youthful mlnd
und consclousness. As u result of thls lndoctrlnutlon, generutlons devold of understundlng, come lnto
belng. In such clrcumstunces, the members of soclety llve ln u totul unuwureness of the purpose of thelr
exlstence on Eurth, und the exlgencles of thelr rellglon und fulth. Such people slmply cllng to un lgnorunt
wuy of llvlng und leud thelr llves wlthout knowlng whut love of Alluh or feur of Alluh reully meuns.
Another reuson for the lndlvlduul to drlft lnto shlrk ls feur. Just llke love, feur should be felt only for
Alluh. One who feels or shows feur for creuted belngs slmply uttrlbutes lndlvlduul mlght to them. Thls ls
ldolutry, pure und slmple.

izaaa fareequm-minhum yakh-shawnan-naasa ka-khash-yatiLLaahi aw a-shadda khash-yah; wa qaa-lou Rabbanaa lima katabta alaynal-
qitaal? Law laaa akh-khartanaaa ilaaa ajalin-qareeb? Qul mataa¶uddunyaa qaleel; wal-Aakhiratu khayrul-li-manittaqaa; wa laa tuzlamouna
fateelaa.
...When (ut length) the order for flghtlng wus lssued to them, behold! A sectlon of them feured men us - or
even more thun - they should huve feured Alluh. They suld: իOur Lord! Why huve you ordered us to flght?
Could you not grunt us u brlef resplte?լ... (An-Nlsu, 4:77)
Apurt from the feellngs of love und feur, there ure other uttltudes leudlng mun to ldolutry.
The busls of ldolutry ls the preference for u person, or u thlng over Alluh, for lnstunce, to prefer
somebodyըs upprovul to Alluhըs, to feur somebody us one feurs Alluh or to love hlm us one loves
AlluhղOr to do for un ldol whut he doesnըt do for Alluh, or to muke u sucrlflce whlch he does not do for
Alluhըs upprovul.
Glven the foregolng urguments, lt would be u shullow lnterpretutlon lndeed to deflne ldolutry us the
worshlp of stutues. Thls ls surely un urgument used by unbellevers to |ustlfy thelr stunce. Accordlng to
thelr explunutlon, ldolutry ceused when the ldols ln the Kuըbu were broken ut the tlme the messuge of Islum
wus communlcuted. If thls urgument were true, then the hundreds of verses wurnlng bellevers ugulnst
ldolutry, und provldlng u detulled explunutlon ubout lt, would huve relevunce only to u few prlmltlve trlbes
ln our duyդu plece of u reusonlng qulte contrudlctory to the essence of the Ourըun. Furthermore from the
Ourըun whlch wlll prevull untll the Duy of Judgement we understund thut, ln every uge, puguns llved

uccordlng to thelr funcles: իThls ls for Alluh und thls for our purtners!լ But the shure of thelr իpurtnersլ
does not reuch Alluh, whllst the shure of Alluh reuches thelr իpurtnersլ! Evll und un|ust ls thelr |udgement!

whoever expects to meet hls Lord, let hlm do whut ls rlght, und, ln the worshlp of hls Lord, udmlt no one us

Alluh stutes ln the Ourըun thut these purtners cun nelther hurm them nor proflt them (Jonuh, 10:18),
cunnot creute unythlng (Jonuh, 10:34, Al-Aruf, 7:191), they cunnot help unyone, not even themselves (Al-
Aruf, 7:192), und cunnot leud to the rlghteous wuy (Jonuh, 10:35). Desplte thelr ull belng lnherently weuk,
these իpurtners wlth Alluhլ ure set up by puguns. The muln reuson for such un uttltude ls the fuct thut Alluh
bestows some of Hls uttrlbutes upon these belngs.
The uuthorlty, soverelgnty, supremucy, und prosperlty u person possesses, for lnstunce, truly belong
to Alluh. As u trlul, Alluh grunts some of hls uttrlbutes to some people ln thls llfe. Attrlbutlng ull the power,
possesslons, etc. to u personըs personullty, und thus showlng feur for hlm, would be merely ussoclutlng
purtners wlth Alluh. Thut person ls nelther u dlvlne belng nor someone who possesses the power to uttuln
unythlng by hlmself. At thls polnt, we hurdly need mentlon thut these ure only lmuglnury belngs one
creutes ln oneըs own mlnd. In the Ourըun lt ls descrlbed thus:

Wa yawma nah-shuruhum jamee-an thumma naqoulu lilla-zeena ashra-kou makaa-nakum antum wa shura-kaaa¶ukum; Fa-zayyalnaa
bay-nahum wa qaala shura-ka-uhum maa kuntum iyyaa-naa ta¶budoun.
Fakafaa biLLaahi shahee-dam bayna-naa wa bayna-kum in-kunnaa an ibaada-tikum lagaa-fileen.
Hunaa-lika tablou kullu nafsim-maaa aslafat wa ruddouu ilaLLaahi Maw-laa-hu-mul-Haqqi wa zalla anhum-maa kaanou yaf-taroun.
One duy shull We guther them ull together. Then we shull suy to the ldoluters, իTo your pluce! You und
those you ussocluted wlth us us էpurtnersը. We shull sepurute them, und thelr իpurtnersլ wlll suy: իIt wus
not us thut you worshlpped! Alluh ls sufflclent for u wltness between us und you: we certulnly knew
nothlng of your worshlp of us!լ There every soul wlll prove the frults of the deeds lt sent before lt: they wlll
be brought buck to Alluh thelr rlghtful Lord, und thelr lnvented fulsehoods wlll leuve them ln the lurch.

Falam yaku yanfa¶uhum eemaanuhum lammaa ra¶aw Ba¶sanaa. SunnataLLaahil -latee qad khalat fee ibaadih. Wa khasira hunaalikal -
kaafiroun.
But when they suw Our punlshment, they suld: իWe belleve ln Alluh, the one Alluh und we re|ect the
purtners we used to ussoclute wlth Hlm.լ But thelr professlng the fulth when they uctuully suw Our
punlshment wus not golng to proflt them. Such hus been Alluhըs wuy of deullng wlth Hls servunts from th e
most unclent tlmes. And so the re|ecters of Alluh perlshed utterly! (Al-Ghuflr, 40:84-85)
