Overview:
Dr. Abbara is an Associate Radiologist in the divisions of Cardiac Imaging and Cardiothoracic Imaging. He
spends approximately 40% of his clinical time interpreting general thoracic and vascular imaging studies and in
the remaining time he performs and interprets cardiac MRI and CT. On a national level, he participates in the
development of the American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness Criteria for Cardiac Imaging. He also
participated in the clinical guideline development for Extracranial Carotid and Vertebral Disease management as
a member of the multi-society writing committee
(ASA/ACC/AHA/AANN/AANS/ACR/ASITN/CNS/SAIP/SCAI/SIR/SVMB). He serves on a joint ACC & ACR
writing committee for a guideline on Imaging in Heart Failure. He has chaired the Society of Cardiovascular
Computed Tomography (SCCT) cardiac CT acquisition guideline writing committee and co-authored the SCCT
Cardiac CT Radiation Dose Management Guideline andSCCT Standard Nomenclature guidelines. Dr. Abbara
is at large Director on the Board of Directors of the Certification Board of Cardiovascular CT, which aims to
ensure high clinical competence of physicians performing clinical cardiac CT across the nation. He has served
on examination development committees for maintainance of certification (MOC) for the American Board of
Radiology.

Selected Clinical Trials:

1. Reviewer for a multicenter, open-label study to evaluate the safety and efficacy (by blinded reading) of
Gadobutrol-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) after a single injection of Gadobutrol in
subjects with known or suspected renal artery disease. 672 MRA imaging timepoints and 336 CTA imaging
timepoints.

E. Report of Clinical Activities

1. Clinical practice
Teaching hospital: Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston MA
Cardiac MRI:
Noninvasive cardiac imaging utilizing computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The
complexity of cardiac imaging necessitates patient preparation, hands on supervision/scanning, post
processing, quantitative data assessment, and interpretation and reporting. Imaging and interpretation of
cardiac MRI and CT are performed in conjunction with the division of cardiology.
Cardiac CT:
Overseeing the clinical cardiac CT service at MGH, Daily responsibilities include patient preparation,
application of necessary medication immediately prior to the CT-scan (i.v. beta blocker, nitro capsule),
supervision of CT scanning, managing potential adverse reactions to contrast material or medication.
Image post processing, data analysis, image interpretation and reporting.
Non-invasive Vascular Imaging and Chest Imaging :
Supervision of technologists acquiring radiographs, Ultrasound, CT, and MRI images, of the thorax and the
arteries and veins. Handling of any potential adverse contrast reactions. Interpretation and reporting of CT,
US, MRI and radiographic images.
2. Patient load
Cardiac MRI and CT: Very complex clinical radiological cases. Average 8-15 clinical cases per day.
Non-invasive Vascular Imaging: MRA/CTA/US cases of varying complexity. ~ 40 studies per day.
Thoracic radiology: Cases of varying complexity. Approximately ~25 CTs or ~120-160 Radiographs
per day.
3. Clinical contributions
1997-2002 Participation in the early development of uterine artery embolization (UAE), a minimally
invasive vascular intervention treatment for uterine fibroids. Introduction of refined interventional
techniques to allow for reduction of radiation dose to the patient from the UAE procedure.
Initiation and development of the clinical cardiac CT service at MGH from 2003 on. This service has
achieved an international reputation as a leading center in the field. Since 2003/2004: development of the
clinical cardiac CT practice at MGH as the clinical director of the cardiovascular imaging section (since
2004). The clinical cardiac CT volume has increased during this time period from approximately 120 cases
in 2003 to approximately 1500 in 2006/2007.
Activity on national and international clinical guidelines development:
Member or Chair of Guidelines Development Committees/Writing Groups of the American College of
Radiology (ACR), American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association Task Force
on Practice Guidelines, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT), American Society of
Echocardiography (ASE) and a joint committee of ACR and American College of Cardiology (ACC):
(1) SCCT - multiple guidelines, including: Cardiac CT Acquisition Guidelines, Radiation dose
management in cardiac CT, and Cardiac CT Nomenclature
(2) ACR Appropriateness Criteria Cardiac Imaging: multiple ongoing Appropriateness Criteria
Guidelines
(3) ACR/ACC Guideline on Imaging in Heart Failure
(4) Member, ACR Appropriateness Criteria Relative Radiation Exposure and Dose (RRL)

Educational videotape distributed nationwide to all radiology residency programs.
Role: Participation as discussant in round table discussion.
The Video is intended to help residents recognize some of the ethical decisions they make in their daytoday professional lives. Topics include patient care issues, such as the appropriate use of imaging studies
and universal use of nonionic contrast material, as well as interpersonal relationships between radiologist
and other physicians.
