he wind blew in icy sheets, cutting through the hunters’ fur robes. In better times, the people would have stayed in the shelter of their caves, waiting for the weather to clear. They had not made a kill for many days, however, and the people needed food. The hunters’ only choice was to follow the herds of bison and caribou into the storm. Luck was with the hunters. In the distance they saw a giant mammoth stuck in a snow bank, trying to free itself. The hunters ran forward, shaking their spears

and shouting with excitement. First 1, then 2, then 10 spears hit their target. The beast sank slowly into the snow. The hunt was over. The hunters would have food for many days. Such a story could possibly have taken place in North America many thousands of years ago. Americans today can only imagine what life might have been like for the earliest Americans. Scientists, however, can tell us much about the earth and climate of the time and about the traces of early people they have found.

5 People Arrive in the Americas
From about 2 million to 10,000 years ago, the earth was in the grip of the Ice Age. The northern half of the world was covered with glaciers. In some places the glaciers were 1 to 2 miles thick. The 56-mile (90-km) strip of water that now separates Alaska from northeastern Asia was the site of a land bridge called Beringia. Because so much of the earth’s water froze into ice, the ocean level dropped. This exposed the strip of land between the two continents. Today that land is covered by the waters of the Bering Strait. Large herds of mammoth, bison, and caribou wandered across the land bridge in search of grazing land. Gradually, small groups of Asian hunters who depended on these animals for food followed them into the Americas. Over the years, both the animals and the people made their way into the grasslands at the southern edges of the glaciers. Exactly when the first Americans arrived remains a mystery. For years many scientists believed that spearheads dating back 11,500 years in Clovis, New Mexico, represented the earliest evidence of people in the Americas. Recent discoveries, however, suggest that the first Americans may have arrived earlier. In Monte Verde, Chile, for example, researchers have found evidence of human life dating back 12,500 years. To reach southern Chile at such an early date, scientist believe humans would have had to cross the land bridge at least 20,000 years ago. They also may have come a different way. Most experts believe the first Americans traveled by land from Asia. However, some scientists think they also may have traveled down the Pacific Coast in small boats.

prehistoric people migrated southward through the Americas. Eventually they settled the southern tip of South America. Along what major mountain ranges did the migration routes flow?

Living in the Americas
The first Americans stayed on the move in search of food. They killed mammoths, musk oxen, saber-tooth cats, bison, and other large animals. They also tracked smaller animals such as deer, fox, bear, and turkeys. To add to their diets, they gathered seeds, berries, nuts, and the roots and bulbs of plants. Thus they are called hunter-gatherers.

been responsible. As the climate grew warmer and drier, grasslands where the animals once grazed became desert. Lakes and streams dried up. As their source of food and water disappeared, so did the animal herds. The hunter-gatherers adjusted to the changes around them in a number of ways. As always, their first concern was food. They fished and hunted smaller animals instead of the large animals of earlier times. The areas over which they hunted and gathered grew smaller. Over time, they settled down to live in one place for long periods of time. They built sturdy, permanent shelters and stored food to make it last longer.

5 The First Farmers
Sometime after about 9,000 years ago, some settled groups began experimenting with the plants in their environment. They probably planted seeds from the best plants and tended them in simple gardens. These garden keepers became the first American farmers. Later, people in present-day Mexico developed an important grain plant from certain wild grasses growing in the highlands. The grain was maize, the first corn. The practice of growing maize soon spread from Mexico to Central America and South America. By about 2,000 years ago, some groups in North America were growing maize, too. Early American farmers also learned to grow beans, squash, and many other crops.

The hunter-gatherers made their own tools and weapons. They shaped pieces of stone and bone to make tools for chopping and scraping. They used wooden poles as spears and hardened the tips by placing them in fire. They made animal hides into clothing and tents. Archaeologists, scientists who search for traces of peoples from the past, believe that these bands of hunter-gatherers gradually spread south to inhabit much of the Americas.

Responding to Warmer Climates
About 10,000 years ago, the Ice Age ended. The earth’s temperatures gradually warmed, the ice melted, and the glaciers shrank. Surface levels of the oceans rose, and the waters of the Bering Strait covered Beringia. No more people would come to the Americas on foot. The large animals of the Ice Age began to become extinct, or die out. Some scientists think the change in climate may have

Carved Bone at Old Crow River
In the summer of 1966, scientist C.R. Harrington visited a village of Native Americans called the Loucheau in northwestern Canada. Harrington believed this would be a good location for finding evidence of early settlers in the Americas. Peter Lord, a Loucheau who lived in the village, agreed to help Harrington. Walking along the valley of the Old Crow River, Lord discovered a large animal bone that had been carved and shaped. Lord thought it might be a tool that people had made and used thousands of years earlier. Later scientific tests revealed that the carved bone was about 27,000 years old. The age of the bone thus told scientists that people have been living in the Americas for at least 27,000 years. Other archaeological finds suggest that people might have been living on the continent even earlier.

Mound Builders and the Anasazi. Anasai is a Navajo word for “Ancient Ones.” We do not know what the people called themselves. Their traditions provided the foundation for many later Native American cultures.

5 The Mound Builders
The Mound Builders began settling in the Midwest and Southeast about 2,700 years ago. They take their name from the monuments of earth and dirt that they built. The mounds took many different shapes. Some were circular and some were rectangular. They ranged from just a few feet to 100 feet (30 m) high. One of the larger mounds covered a base of 16 acres (6 ha). Sometimes long, winding earthworks surrounded the mounds like protective fences.

The Native Americans
There are many mysteries still to be solved about the earliest Americans. Scientists believe the evidence does show, however, that the Native Americans are descendants of the hunters who came to the Americas from Asia thousands of years ago. As the Native Americans spread out over the two continents of the Americas, they developed a variety of rich cultures. A culture is a total way of life a people follow to satisfy their needs and wants. By at least 2,000 years ago, there were two major Native American cultures living in the present-day United States—the

Mystery of the Mounds
The mounds were a mystery for people who saw them many years later. Archaeologists have uncovered many artifacts, or items that people had created, inside the mounds. They believe the Mound Builders buried these artifacts for the dead to use in an afterworld. The artifacts include such items as stone pipes, copper tools, and mirrors made of the mineral mica. Archaeologists also know now that some mounds were built for religious ceremonies, not as burial sites.

Dog Companions Dogs were part of Native American life from the very beginning. They came along with the peoples migrating from Asia and may have been trained to help in tracking and hunting game animals. The site of a bison kill in Colorado included the remains of a dog that date back 10,000 years.

The Adena
The Adena were a mound-building people who settled in the southern part of present-day Ohio and western West Virginia. Their culture flourished from about 2,700 to 1,800 years ago. They grew some crops such as sunflowers, pumpkins, and tobacco. They were mainly hunter-gatherers, however, rather than farmers. Plentiful game and wild plants supplied most of their food needs. Because food was always nearby, they could build permanent houses and stay in one location.

The Hopewell
The Hopewell Mound Builders were spread over a wide area that included present-day West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, and

Michigan. Their culture was at its height between 2,100 and 1,500 years ago. In contrast to the neighboring Adena, the Hopewell relied heavily on farming for food. Their earthworks were larger, their art more advanced, and their religious ceremonies more organized. Items found at Hopewell sites reveal that the people participated in a large trading network. Archaeologists have found shells from the Atlantic Ocean, silver from Canada, alligator skulls from Florida, and volcanic glass from Wyoming. Around A.D. 500, both the Hopewell and the Adena declined and disappeared. No one knows what happened to them, but scientists have suggested that illness, war, or a change in climate may have played a role in their decline.

The Mississippian Culture
The Mississippian mound-building culture developed around the year 700, soon after the disappearance of the Hopewell and the Adena. The most advanced of all the Mound Builders, the Mississippians are also known as Temple Mound Builders. Many of their mounds had high, level tops, on which they built temples and homes for their important leaders. The Mississippians settled near rivers, where they practiced advanced farming methods. They grew large crops of corn, beans, squash, pumpkin, and tobacco. They also kept livestock. Most archaeologists think the Mississippians traded for other goods with Native Americans in present-day Mexico and Central America. Mississippian villages had large populations. The largest was Cahokia, along the Illinois River in present-day Illinois. Estimates place Cahokia’s population at about 40,000. Its temple and burial mounds numbered more than 100. Mississippian villages began to disappear by about 1500. European explorers found only one group after they reached North America.

5 The Cliff Dwellers
Many groups of Native Americans, called cliff dwellers, built houses on the walls of canyons and under the overhangs of caves. The Anasazi were one such group. They lived in the rugged land of present-day Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah from about 100 to 1300.

Anasazi Pueblos
The Anasazi built homes that the Spanish explorers of the 1500s called pueblos, meaning “villages” in Spanish. The pueblos were built of stone, timber, and adobe bricks. Adobe is a building material made of earth and straw. The pueblos were made up of small apartment-like homes stacked on top of one another. Many were four or five stories high and connected by ladders. At first the Anasazi built their pueblos on the canyon floor. Later, they began to build them on the sides of cliffs. Archaeologists think it may have been for protection from invaders. Whatever the reason, it definitely made life more difficult. Farmers with fields at the base of the cliff or on the mesa above it had to spend much of their time climbing. At the height of their development, the Anasazi grew corn, squash, beans, tobac-

co, and cotton. They also raised turkeys. Anasazi artists crafted pottery and jewelry from stone, shell, and metal. Some materials found at Anasazi sites reveal that they traded with other Native Americans who lived as far away as Mexico. No one knows why the Anasazi began to leave their cliff dwellings in about 1300. There may have been a drought, or an enemy may have invaded. Whatever the reason, much of the Anasazi culture was passed to generations of Native Americans who later inhabited the area.

hen Europeans first arrived in America in 1492, the Native American population north of Mexico was about 15 to 20 million. Among these millions, there were at least 2,000 different groups, or nations. Over time these different groups of Native Americans had formed many rich and diverse ways of life. Some of the culture groups developed into large and elaborate empires, while others remained simple in their organization. To study the many different Native American groups, it is helpful to divide North America into larger culture areas. People who lived in the same culture area often shared many similar cultural traits. The map on page 46 shows 10 major North American culture areas that had developed by the 1400s.

During the thousands of years that Native Americans lived in North America, they developed many different ways to get food, build homes, practice religion, and enforce their laws. They spoke more than 1,000 different languages.

Beliefs
Most Native Americans believed in the power of spirits found in nature. Religious leaders, called shamans, were thought to have close contact with the spirit world.

Native Americans tried to live in harmony with nature and the land. They believed no one person could own land. Land was shared by all members of a nation—not bought, sold, or passed down through inheritance. Many Native American beliefs and related traditions are still observed by Native American groups today and are shared by other Americans as well.

The Aleuts
Most Aleuts settled on the Aleutian Islands of the Alaska Peninsula. The Aleuts were mainly hunters but they also gathered clams and berries. They hunted in boats made of whale skin stretched over a frame of whale ribs. They used harpoons and nets to snare their prey. Aleut villages usually had from 50 to 150 residents. Many of the homes were made from driftwood, whalebone, sod, and animal skins. Men and women usually wore long parkas made from otter or bird skins, furs, or animal intestines. Women sewed the clothing together with needles made from tiny bird bones and thread made of fish parts.

5 The Arctic
The people of the Arctic and Subarctic areas settled farther north than any other culture. People in these two regions had to adapt to cold winters and short summers. The land of the Arctic extends along the northern borders of Alaska and Canada. The two main Native American cultures in this area were the Aleuts and the Inuit.

The Inuit
The Inuit moved farther inland and populated northern Canada. Like the Aleuts, many lived near the sea and hunted seal, walruses, and whales. In summer, they moved inland to hunt caribou and fish in the lakes and rivers. Nothing was wasted in the Inuit culture. Anything not used for food was made into clothing, shelter, sleds, weapons, or fuel for heating. Wood was extremely rare on these ice covered, treeless plains. For homes, they built skin tents or sod houses.

make large houses, tools, and weapons. The soft inner bark of trees was used for weaving baskets and for making clothing. Large canoes that could hold more than 50 people were built by digging out or burning out the inside of giant redwood trees. Like their early ancestors, these people also made large totem poles—tall, wooden posts with carvings of faces. Among most groups of the Northwest, the wealthiest families made the decisions. To show their wealth, leaders often hosted potlatches. A potlatch was a feast at which the host family gave valuable gifts to members of the community.

5 The Subarctic
The climate of the Subarctic was also harsh, but much of the land was covered with forests and lakes. Like the people of the Arctic, Subarctic people traveled from place to place hunting, fishing, and gathering food. The caribou was their most important source of meat. They also hunted moose, deer, beaver, and rabbit. Because wood was plentiful, it was used with sod and other material to build homes.

5 California
The mild climate and plentiful resources of the California area supported a large population of at least 100 groups of Native Americans. On the coast fish, shellfish, and wild plants were plentiful. Away from the coast, people such as the Pomo hunted small forest game and gathered acorns to pound into meal. They made a kind of mush from the acorn meal. The Chumash lived on the southern coast and were master ocean fishers. They built long, wooden canoes and traveled many miles out to sea. Simple harpoons and nets made from grass and weighted with stones were used to catch fish.

5 The Northwest Coast
The misty, forested coast of the Pacific Northwest supported many Native American nations. The environment teemed with animal, sea, and plant life. Food was so abundant that the people who lived here had no need to farm. Salmon made up a large part of the diet along with sea otters, seals, bear, and moose. 5 The Plateau
The Plateau culture area was just east of the Northwest Coast. It was bordered by the Cascade Mountains on the west and the Rocky Mountains on the east. The Plateau is a land of many rivers. Salmon was the main source of food for the people who lived here along with bulbs, roots, and berries. The rivers also served as routes for travel and trade. To protect themselves from winter’s cold, many people built homes that were

partly underground. In summer, they lived under wooden frames covered with mats. Although this area was not as populated as the Northwest Coast, it supported more than 20 Native American groups, including the Nez Perce and the Yakima.

5 The Great Basin
The Great Basin was home to the Shoshone, Paiute, and Utes. In this dry desert area, temperatures can soar to more than 100 degrees. Sagebrush and grasses are the only plants, except for the evergreens in the surrounding mountains. People who lived here were called “diggers” because they had to dig in the ground for most of their food. Seeds, berries, roots, snakes, lizards, insects, and rodents were the main diet for these people who spent most of their time in search of food and water.

PUEBLO FARMING The Pueblos had to be skilled farmers in order to grow crops in their dry climate. What kinds of crops did the Pueblos grow?

5 The Plains
The area of the Plains culture stretched west from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Large herds of buffalo, antelope, and elk grazed on the treeless grasslands of the Great Plains. Some of the Native Americans who lived in the Plains area were the Sioux, Pawnee, Crow, Cheyenne, and Comanche. They lived in villages along streams and rivers, where they built homes of sod and farmed the riverbanks. Their crops included corn, beans, squash, tobacco, and sunflowers. During the summer, they left the villages to hunt buffalo herds that roamed the plains. Native Americans used all parts of the buffalo. The people ate the buffalo meat and used the hides for clothing and cone-shaped tents, called tepees. They also used the buffalo bones for tools, cooking utensils, and ceremonial purposes. The lives of the Plains groups changed dramatically after the Europeans brought horses to North America. The first horses probably reached the Plains in the 1600s. Hunters no longer had to hunt on foot.

5 The Southwest
The people of the Southwest had two basic lifestyles. They were either farmers or hunter-gatherers. Like their cliffdwelling ancestors, most lived in pueblos. One of the largest nations, called the Pueblos, included the Hopi and Zuni. The Pueblos were skilled farmers. The land was dry, so they built irrigation canals to grow corn, squash, beans, and tobacco. Corn was ground into meal and made into flat cakes and bread. Surplus or extra food was traded to other nations. The Pueblos’ settled way of life was not always shared by all groups in the Southwest. The Apache and Navajo came to the area around 1500. They roamed the mountains and deserts hunting. When hunting was poor, they raided villages and farms for food. Later the Navajo became farmers like the Pueblos, but the Apache continued their hunting and wandering way of life.

They could travel long distances at greater speeds on horseback. After the people of the Plains acquired horses, they gave up most of their farming and focused on hunting. Instead of settling in one area, they followed the herds.

5 The Northeast Woodlands
The Northeast Woodlands area had dense forests, fertile river valleys, and rushing streams. It supported at least 40 groups of Native Americans. Some groups were constantly on the move in search of food. Others settled in villages, where they built more permanent homes.

To bring an end to the bloodshed, a Mohawk leader named Hiawatha suggested that the nations band together. They agreed and formed what was known as the Iroquois League. Later they added a sixth member, the Tuscarora. The Iroquois League has been called the first true representative form of government in North America.

5 The Southeast
Of all the Native American culture areas, the Southeast was the most densely populated. The people living here developed a variety of cultures and spoke many different languages. The Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Seminole, and Natchez were just a few among the many Native American peoples. For meat and skins, the men in the Southeast hunted buffalo, deer, and bear; they also fished in streams. Most groups in the Southeast, however, relied heavily on farming. The women planted and harvested corn, beans, squash, and sweet potatoes. Women had a high standing in Southeastern cultures. Some were members of war councils and a few became warriors as well.

The Iroquois and the Algonquin
The Iroquois and Algonquin were the two main cultures in the Northeast Woodlands. There were many different bands within these groups, but most spoke a form of either the Iroquois or Algonquin language.

Native American Arts
Artwork of Native Americans reflected the environments in which they lived. From lakes and streams in the eastern woodlands, people gathered thousands of freshwater clam shells. They used the shells to make disc-shaped white and purple beads. Then they strung the beads on threadlike strips of animal tendon. Called wampum, this highly prized beadwork was used for gifts, good luck charms, and in exchange for goods. People in the Southwest created colorful sandpaintings in their kivas, or religious rooms. They made the paintings by spreading sand and finely ground flower petals and leaves on the walls. Southwest Native American people also designed distinctive clay pottery and sculptures. Unique designs painted on the pots, dishes, and ceremonial pieces identified the creators and the groups to which they belonged. Women of the Plains colored porcupine quills with dyes made from ground-up

vegetables and minerals. They stitched or wove the quills into animal skins, which they used for decoration. In the Northwest, artists used cedar bark, mountain goat wool, and dog hair to weave designs into capes. The designs showed the rank of the wearer. Walrus tusks, whalebone, antlers, and stone were popular materials for Inuit artists of the Arctic. From these materials they carved buttons, ceremonial knives, masks, and religious charms. Much of their art featured pictures of animals that were important to their survival.

INCAN KNIFE

There are in the city many large and beautiful houses [with] large . . . rooms and . . . very pleasant gardens of flowers both on the upper and lower floors. . . . Along one of the causeways to this great city run two aqueducts [through which] good fresh water . . . flows into the heart of the city and from this they all drink.

The person who wrote these words was a Spanish explorer and soldier who came to the Americas in the early 1500s. The scene he described was the city Tenochtitlán (tay•NAWCH•teet•LAHN). In awe of such

a beautiful, well-built city, the Spaniard wanted to report what he had seen to rulers in Spain. Tenochtitlán was the capital of the Aztec empire, a Native American civilization that developed in present-day Mexico. A civilization is a group of people with an advanced culture. In addition to hunting and farming, it usually has some form of writing or method of keeping records, an organized government and religion, cities, and social classes. It also has specialized workers, or those who do only one kind of work such as teaching or jewelry making. The Aztec were only one of at least three great civilizations that grew up in

Mexico, Central America, and South America. The Mayan civilization, for example, existed long before the Aztec.

5 The Maya
About 3,000 years ago, a small group of farmers began clearing land in the southern part of present-day Mexico and the northern part of Central America. With only simple tools, they cleared thick jungles swarming with insects and snakes. The villages the farmers created prospered. By the year A.D. 250, they had expanded into an empire that covered nearly 120,000 square miles (310,800 sq. km) and included 200 cities. The population had soared to more than 10 million.

Rulers and priests lived in the cities’ large stone palaces. Most Mayan people, however, lived in simple one-room houses near their fields in the countryside. They visited the cities only to attend religious ceremonies or to exchange goods in the large markets. Before returning home from such a visit, a family might attend a ball game played on one of the large stone courts in the city.

Religion and Science
Priests, many of whom were also rulers, were the most important people in the Mayan empire. The priests helped the Maya please the gods. Gods were thought to control the sun, rain, and other forces of nature. The Maya believed that if the gods

Skilled Farmers
Much of the Maya’s growth resulted from their skill in farming. Applying knowledge passed down from their ancestors, they grew corn, beans, squash, sweet potatoes, and avocados. They drained marshes to create more farmland. They built terraces—leveled off strips of land—so they could farm hillsides. They hauled rich soil from riverbanks and river bottoms to make their fields more productive. They also raised turkeys and kept honeybees. The Maya produced so much food that they had plenty to trade. They also traded salt, honey, and jaguar pelts for jade, brightly colored feathers, and cacao beans. Cacao beans were used as a type of money throughout the empire.

City Builders
The Maya were master builders. At the centers of most of their cities were tall pyramids built of limestone blocks. Atop the pyramids were temples where Mayan priests conducted religious ceremonies.

Colorful paintings, created by highly skilled artists, decorated the walls of tombs. Metalsmiths made jewelry from jade, gold, and shells, and weavers created beautifully designed fabrics.

The Mayan Decline
The Mayan empire was at its height from about 250 to 900. By 900, however, the people began deserting their cities and moving to other areas. Archaeologists think the people may have moved away because of drastic climate changes or because the farmland was no longer fertile. There may have been an invasion of outsiders. By the mid-1500s, the Spaniards had taken over all the Mayan strongholds. The Mayan culture still survives, however. Today, more than 2 million descendants of the Maya live in Mexico and Central America.

were pleased they would favor the people with good weather and bountiful crops. The priests were fascinated with the stars, the sky, and the passage of time. They studied the movement of the stars and made accurate maps of the star groups. They developed two calendars. One was a 365-day calendar like the one we use today. In addition to being scientists, Mayan priests were also skilled mathematicians. Using dots and dashes, they developed a system of numbers before anyone else in the Americas. They had a symbol to represent zero, which some advanced civilizations in Europe did not.

5 The Aztec
The Aztec built their empire between 1300 and 1520. Their center in present-day Mexico was west and north of where the Mayan empire had been.

A Message From the Gods
The early Aztec were wandering hunter-gatherers. According to Aztec legend, they were instructed by a god to find a permanent place to settle. The god said an eagle perched on a cactus would mark the place where they should build their home. The people found the eagle on a marshy island in Lake Texcoco, at the site of present-day Mexico City. On this site they built their capital city, which later became home to more than 100,000 people. They named the city Tenochtitlán, meaning “Place of the Prickly Pear Cactus.”

Cultural Achievements
The Maya developed a system of writing using symbols instead of letters. These symbols or pictures are called hieroglyphs. The Maya carved their hieroglyphs on the columns of temples and tombs to tell the stories of Mayan rulers and priests.

To grow food on the wet, swampy land, farmers built floating gardens. They first anchored mats to the bottom of the swamp and then piled soil on them. The strips of land thus created were more than 100 feet (30 m) long and 15 to 30 feet (5 to 9 m) wide. Farmers tending the gardens moved around in boats. Corn, squash, beans, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and chili peppers were important crops.

Conquest and Trade
The Aztec built their wealth and power on trade and conquest. Their warriors were fierce and well trained. They took thousands of prisoners in battle. Conquered peoples became members of Aztec society, but were forced to pay tribute. Tribute was like a tax that could be paid in goods or in services. As more people were conquered, wealth flowed into the empire and its capital. Aztec society had a rigid class system. Nobles, at the top, inherited their positions. Government officials, priests, and warriors were all nobles. Below them on the social scale were commoners, peasant farmers, and enslaved persons. Many of the people who were conquered were enslaved, but their children were born free. Of the three lowest classes, only commoners could own land. All classes except the nobles had to pay tribute. CEREMONIAL AZTEC SHIELD The Aztec traveled great distances to trade. Brightly colored feathers, gold, and other items were exchanged for blue turquoise, chocolate, and other goods not available within the empire. Some Native Americans in the Southwest and Southeast of the present-day United States traded with the Aztec.

The Greatness of Tenochtitlán
The Aztec constructed three large causeways, or raised highways over water, to connect their island capital with the mainland around the lake. They also built a system of aqueducts, channels or big pipes for flowing water, to bring freshwater from the mountains. As you read at the beginning of this section, these structures greatly impressed the Spaniards in the early 1500s. Aztec workers built stone pyramids in Tenochtitlán for the priests. The city also had large, well-stocked outdoor markets, parks, schools, barbershops, and a zoo.

Priests and Religion
Religion was very important to the Aztec. The most sacred god was the god of sun and war, but the Aztec worshiped at least 1,000 others. In addition to religious duties, the priests kept a history of the Aztec people. Information about the gods, important events, and other records were kept in books filled with bark pages. Priests were also teachers. They taught children history, craft making, and religious traditions.

Biography 5555 Montezuma and the Aztec Decline

[He has] all the things to be found under the heavens . . . fashioned in gold and silver and jewels and feathers . . . jewels so fine that it is impossible to imagine with what instruments they were cut.

MONTEZUMA AND CORTÉS

These words—from the same Spaniard who reported on Tenochtitlán—described the Aztec emperor Montezuma II in the early 1500s. (His name is also spelled Moctezuma.) Montezuma, a 35-year-old priest, came to the throne in 1502. He replaced his uncle, the ninth Aztec ruler. The Aztec were at the height of their power at this point. From all accounts, Montezuma liked to be surrounded with riches and honor. Before people could approach him, he made them remove their shoes and their jewelry and keep their eyes to the ground. He insisted on eating alone, separating himself from others with a wooden screen. Montezuma was not a popular emperor. Many of his people resented him for demanding tribute. Records reveal that some Aztec predicted the downfall of the empire under Montezuma. Montezuma

himself feared that a white god was coming to seize his throne. In 1520 his fears became fact. The Aztec empire was under attack, and Montezuma was killed in his palace. The conqueror, however, was not a god. It was instead Hernán Cortés, a Spaniard who had come to seize the riches of the Aztec empire. Although Montezuma had welcomed Cortés when he entered Tenochtitlán in 1519, the Spaniards took him captive. They then looted the city of gold and silver. Eight months later, Montezuma was killed by a stone thrown by an Aztec during a revolt against the Spanish. 555

5 The Inca
The largest empire in the Americas was the one created in South America by the Inca. The Inca began to expand their rule over others about 1200. By the 1400s their empire stretched 2,500 miles (4,023 km) along the Andes Mountains—through present-day Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and parts of Argentina and Chile.

The Incan empire was extremely well organized. Unlike the Aztec, the Inca conquered many of their subjects by peaceful means. Before sending soldiers, the Incan ruler would send ambassadors to persuade the people to surrender. Often, those who surrendered were allowed to keep their own rulers. Incan armies stationed throughout the empire maintained peace. To further unify the empire, newly conquered people were required to learn the Incan language and practice the Incan religion. The Incan ruler governed from the capital city of Cuzco, high in the Andes. His palace—with its hundreds of rooms and thousands of servants—was itself like a town. His bodyguards wore gold armor. The ruler held great power over the people of his empire. He controlled all of the goods and services they produced and made decisions for them. Incan farmers terraced the steep hillsides and built irrigation canals to grow crops. They grew corn, beans, cotton, and squash in the valleys. In the mountains they grew potatoes and raised herds of llama and alpaca for meat and wool. The government owned all the food that was grown. Some of it was kept in government storehouses for use during wars or other emergencies.

INCAN BRIDGES The Inca built straw rope bridges to connect their system of roads. Descendants of the Inca continue to use the same construction for these bridges, replacing them every year. How many miles long was the road system used to connect the Incan empire?

Most people had to work on projects for the government. One project was a 10,000mile (16,090-km) road system to connect the far reaches of the Incan empire. Workers cleared trees, moved huge boulders, dug tunnels, and built bridges to create a stone-covered road. In the early 1500s, the Incan ruler died, and there was a bitter fight for the throne. In the following years, unrest spread throughout the empire. Thus when European invaders arrived in the 1500s, they found a weakened civilization.
