The countdown to 2016 has just about begun. If youre like many people,
you might be mulling over some New Years resolutions, such as hitting the
gym more, learning a new language or taking a cooking class. All are worthy
goals, but why not add some financial resolutions as well? For example
Pay yourself first. Even if you arent living paycheck to paycheck,
you probably dont have much trouble spending your money because
theres always something that you or a family member needs, always a
repair required for your home or your car, always one more bill to pay. But
if you are going to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable
retirement, you need to invest consistently. So before you pay everyone
else, pay yourself first by having some money automatically moved from
your checking or savings account each month into an investment.
Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have a 401(k) or similar
plan at work, take full advantage of it. Contribute as much as you can
afford or at least enough to earn your employers match, if one is offered
and choose the mix of investments that give you the potential to achieve
the growth you need at a level of risk with which you are comfortable.
Focus on the long term. In the short term, you might be excused for not
wanting to invest. The headlines are typically scary, the financial markets
are frequently volatile and the future often looks murky. Yet, if you can
look past the uncertainties of today and keep your focus on tomorrow, you
will find it easier to follow a disciplined investment strategy that gives you
the opportunity to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.
Dont be driven by fear. When the market is down, investors tend to
react with fear. Specifically, they rush to sell their investments, afraid that
if they dont cut their losses, they might sustain even bigger ones. If you
can get past this feeling, you may find that a down market can offer you the
chance to buy quality investments at good prices.
Forget about the hot stocks. Youll hear friends, co-workers and
talking heads on television tout todays hot stocks. But by the time you
might hear about them, they may have cooled off and, in any case, they
might not be appropriate for your needs. Forget about getting rich quick
in the market it probably wont happen. True investment success
requires patience and persistence.
Cut down on your debts. Its easy to pile up debts, but a lot harder getting rid of them. Yet, if you can reduce your debt load even moderately,
youll free up money you could use to invest. So look for ways to conserve,
cut back and consolidate it will be worth the effort. Making these resolutions and sticking to them can help you as you work toward achieving your financial goals.

BBB Top Ten scams of 2015:

Tax scam is #1
When Better Business Bureau
launched BBB Scam Tracker earlier
this year, it was expected that tax
scams would be high on the list. What
was surprising was how high; more
than the next three categories put
together. In the first 10,000 scam
reports processed by BBB, a whopping
24% were about imposters pretending
to be either the Internal Revenue
Service (2,363 reports) or the Canadian
Revenue Agency (50 reports). The rest of
the top ten were all some form of
imposter scam: debt collection scam,
sweepstakes scam, tech support scam,
government grant scam, etc. About 85%
of those reporting scams to BBB recogCOUPON

nized them as frauds before any money

was stolen, but the Top Ten Scams still
account for more than $1 million dollars lost from those who filed with BBB.
Scammers are all basically
imposters, notes Mary E. Power, president and CEO of the Council of Better
Business Bureaus, the umbrella organization for 113 local, independent BBBs
across the United States, Canada and
Mexico. Three of the top four scams
reported to us are those that scare people with threats of arrest, law suits or
other frightening actions. Scammers are
pretending to be government agents,
lawyers, debt collectors, police officers.
They engage directly with you, so your
best bet to avoid being scammed is to
stop engaging. Hang up the phone,
delete the email, shut the door.
How the Scams Work:
1. Tax Scam: You receive a phone
call from someone who claims to be
with the IRS (U.S.) or CRA (Canada).
They claim you owe money in back
taxes and will be arrested or face legal
consequences if you do not pay (usually by wire or prepaid debit card). The
caller ID is spoofed to appear to be a
government agency or the police.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on your

website and they look amazing! My problem is that I
have had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt
and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to please
help me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out to
chew. Can you fix this dentists dentures so I dont have
to pay for another set! Please help me, as I cant live this
way.
Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You did
not mention if this was an immediate set of dentures
given to you the day your other teeth were removed or
simply a replacement for older dentures. There is an art
to making dentures and even with tremendous care and
skill; denture fabrication is a process that requires
patience. As people live with dentures they experience
continued bone loss. There is so much bone loss that
dentures begin to move and may actually slide during
chewing even with using denture adhesives. When teeth
are removed you actually lose up to 40% of the
remaining bone width in the first year after teeth are
removed and you can continue to lose 40-60% of the
remaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!
The solution is to save teeth if possible and if not
practical to place mini-implants or traditional implants to
preserve the bone.
Implants preserve bone! That means that over time
dentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.
I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fitting
dentures usually require that they be made again from
scratch. It is just too easy to change someones denture
and then feel that the changes that were made could have
made your situation worse! So most dentists will want to
start over with new impressions, brand new teeth and
mountings to try and remedy the problems you have
experienced. Trying to make your dentures fit may
actually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of
money, which would be wasted if your dentures could
not be made to be comfortable.
In rare situations, I will work with someones old
dentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores or
simply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

BOYS BASKETBALL: Hamilton holds off Tosa rally

BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Hamilton boys basketball team turned

back a second half comeback by Wauwatosa
East to win 56-45 Dec. 14.
Hamilton's first three point came on threepoint baskets, as the Chargers took a 9-3 lead
following the second three-point basket by
Travis Janus at the 11:49 mark of the first half.
Two free throws by Jacob Hartung gave
Hamilton an 18-9 lead by the 6:08 mark. But
the Red Raiders kept the Charger lead at nine
points for the rest of the half.
Two free throws by Zach Jansinski gave
Hamilton a 28-18 lead with 13:28 remaining,
but the Red Raiders rallied by scoring the next
nine points over the next three minutes.
Hamilton answered with a three-point basket
by Jordan Smith at the 9:27 mark to quash the
Red Raider comeback. A layup by Wauwatosa
East's JaiVionne Green cut the Hamilton lead
to 43-37 with 2:26 remaining but Hamilton -which was now in the bonus after the Red
Raiders committed their seventh foul at the
3:06 mark of the second half -- converted several free throws to seal the victory.
Afterward, Hamilton Coach Andy Cerroni
said that when Hamilton wasn't scoring, they
weren't able to press East, which opened up

opportunities for the Red Raiders.

"I was really proud of the way our kids
answered the run and made some plays. That
was huge," Cerroni said.
Jasinski led Hamilton with 19 points while
Jasinski added 15 points.
The Chargers also were hurt by fouls in the
second half, as they committed their seventh
foul at the 10:46 mark, which gave East
chances at the free throw line.
"The free throws down the stretch were the
difference," Cerroni said of his team's scores
from the line.
Hamilton was tied with Milwaukee
Marquette for the Greater Metro Conference
lead, with both teams having 2-0 conference
records.Hamilton has a 5-0 overall mark.
Hamilton's first conference win of the season
came with a 63-47 win over West Allis Central
Dec. 11. Hartung led Hamilton with 16 points.
Menomonee Falls results
Menomonee Falls lost their first Greater
Metro Conference games of the year. The
Indians lost to West Allis Dec. 15, 58-42. Jaden
Champion led Menomonee Falls with 10 points.
Four days earlier Menomonee Falls lost to
Marquette, 56-47. Bryce McMurtry led
Menomonee Falls with 12 points.

successful program. Steve was an integral part

of those accomplishments and a tremendous
resource of knowledge, not just on the basketball court but on life in general," Dalton said.
Stuve noted that Dalton was a fan of UCLA
basketball Coach John Wooden, and Wooden's
"pyramid of success" is given to all members of
the team at the beginning of the season.
Stuve then went over the values of the base of
the pyramid in remembrance of Dalton.
On the value of "industriousness," Stuve
noted that Dalton had detailed practice plans
"and an unmatched work ethic. He gave everything he had to make sure his players were prepared for every game."
On the value of friendship," Stuve said
Dalton "was as reliable and kind-hearted a
friend as you will ever come across. He was
genuine in his actions and he cared deeply for
others."
On the value of loyalty, Stuve said Dalton
"gave us complete support to the players and
fellow coaches. He worked diligently every day
to make the program as good as it could be."
On the value of cooperation, Stuve said
Dalton always did what was best for the
greater good of the program. Dalton, Stuve
said, was adaptable "and had a keen understanding of the big picture at all times."
On the value of enthusiasm, Stuve said
Dalton "truly enjoyed teaching the game of
basketball. He enthusiasm for learning was

inspirational to all of us. Even with 30 years of

experience he was still eager to learn new
things and do everything he could be the best
at every facet of coaching."
Stuve noted that over the past several years
Dalton underwent treatment for cancer and his
physical stature lessened, but Stuve said his
passion for the game and his dedication to the
program was stronger than ever.
"Steve's legacy is embodied by this year's
program motto: 'Whatever you do, work at it
with all your heart,'" Stuve said. "Steve exemplified this in all he did and for that we are
profoundly and eternally grateful."
Stuve then added: "As I look back on
Steve's final season last year, I realize he was
not dying as much as he was showing us all
how to live -- and that's with integrity, sincerity, kindness, generosity, with passion and
enthusiasm for all you do."
As Stuve spoke, a photo of Dalton was displayed on screens behind both baselines of the
basketball court.

BBB Top Ten scams of 2015

From Page 1

2. Debt Collection Scam: You receive

a phone call from someone claiming
that you have an unpaid debt. You are
threatened with garnishments, lawsuits, even jail time if you dont pay
right now. The scammer will often use
caller ID spoofing and pretend to be a
government agency or law enforcement
in order to further invoke fear.
3. Sweepstakes/Prizes/Gifts Scam:
You receive a call, letter, or email
claiming youve won a prize in a sweepstakes. In order to receive the prize,
you are instructed to send a fee to
cover expenses associated with delivery, processing, or insurance. The prize
is not real; you should never have to
pay money to claim a prize you have
won.
4. Tech Support Scam: You are contacted by technicians claiming to
have detected a virus or security threat
on your computer and, for a fee, can
log-in and correct the problem remotely. These callers are actually hackers
trying to steal money or sensitive computer passwords and/or damage computers with malicious software.
5. Government Grant Scam: You
receive a phone call, email, or letter
informing you that youve qualified for
a government grant. In order to receive
the grant, however, you are instructed
to send money as a processing or delivery fee, usually by wire transfer or prepaid debit card.
6. Advance Fee Loan Scam: While
searching for loan information, you see
an enticing ad and click through to the
website. You fill out an application and
soon receive an email or phone call
advising that you are approved for the
loan, but you must first send a processing fee, security deposit or insurance.
You pay the fee, but never see the
loan.
7. Credit Card Scam: The scammer
pretends to be from your bank or credit card issuer, and they claim that you
are now eligible for a lower interest
rate, or that they need to verify a
recent transaction. The consumer provides the scammer with their credit
card number and security code to verify their identity.
8. Work from Home Scam: While
looking for a job online, you answer an
ad for making big bucks while working
from home. The job may be stuffing
envelopes, posting advertisements, or
shipping packages. You could have your
identity stolen when you fill out the
employment forms, or even end up handling stolen merchandise.
9. Fake Check/Money Order Scam:
This can happen any time someone is
paying you for goods or services (even
when you are selling something
online). You receive a check in the mail
that is larger than the amount owed,
and you are asked to deposit the check
and wire the difference. The check is a
fake and when it bounces, youre out
the money.
10. Lottery scam: You receive a call,
letter, or email advising that you have
won a large amount of money in a foreign lottery, but you have to pay
upfront for taxes and fees. Such lotter-

ies are illegal. Sometimes you may be

sent a check as partial payment, but
the check will be counterfeit.
Why Scams Work:
There is a science to scams, and it
may surprise you to know that scammers use many of the same techniques
as legitimate sales professionals. The
difference, of course, is that their
product is illegal and could cost you
a fortune. Here are the major techniques they use to draw you in:
Establishing a connection: The
scammer builds rapport and a relationship with you. This is usually used faceto-face, as in home improvement scams
and many investment scams, but also
online romance scams.
Source credibility: Scammer use
techniques to make themselves look
legitimate, such as fake websites, social
media posts, or hacked emails that
come from a friends account. Most
email phishing scams spoof real companies, and many scammers pretend to be
a trusted business or government
agency in order to add credibility.
Playing on emotions: Scammers
rely on emotion to get you to make a
quick decision before you have time to
think about it. An emergency situation
or a limited time offer is usually their
methodology. They count on emotional
rather than rational decision-making.
What You Can Do:
Dont be pressured into making
fast decisions.
Never provide your personal information (address, date-of-birth, banking
information, ID numbers) to people you
do not know.
Dont click on links from unsolicited email or text messages.
If you are unsure about a call or
email that claims to be from your bank,
utility company, etc., call the business
directly using the number on your bill
or credit card.
Never send money by wire transfer
or prepaid debit card to someone you
dont know or havent met in person.
Never send money for an emergency situation unless you can verify
the emergency.
