My fellow anglers and friends,

Greetings to all. Time flies really fast. Another year is coming
to past and I can still remember the day we started The Asian
Angler magazine as if it were only yesterday. Now after three years and looking back, we have made such a big difference not only in the fishing world but
also in the world of publishing. Who would have known that a small team of
Malaysians would be the ones rendering traditional e-magazines obsolete
with the mobile magazine concept. We did it.

We have journeyed far in this adventure and we have decided to take on higher mountains. As of this month (December 2015) we have become a publishing house. We are no more just a magazine. We are now The Asian Publisher

Pemancing Asia, and Escapy (travel magazine). Do visit us and check out our
magazines of which are still free for your reading pleasure.
That said, I must apologize for this months issue being late due to all the
changes and moving and rebuilding, and etc, etc, etc. With this big step we
will have to grow our team as well. We will do so next year. So if youve been

ome like it hot. Some like it cold. Some want it both

ways. The demands of human beings are a plenty. Take
for example the car. At first we had them in manual
gearbox. Then came the automatic gearbox. Still drivers were not satisfied. They wanted both and thus we
now have gearboxes than can do both manual and automatic the likes of Tiptronic gearboxes.
The same goes to fishing. We want our fishing tackle

to be able to do lots of things. We want our lures to
be able to find fish. We want rods that can do both
spinning and casting. We want lines to be thinner
than braid but invisible like fluorocarbon. We want
a lot but let us take a look at a casting reel that is
also made for jigging.

Inshore Fishing
Two Handles
The Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 is a reel designed

for both casting and jigging. More precisely, it is
made for inshore or bay type of fishing where waters are shallow and the fishing considered to be
saltwater light tackle fishing.
To be able to do both casting and jigging, the Abu

Garcia Salty Stage BV8 reel comes with both a double handle and a single power handle. The double
handle with EVA knobs is like most handles you find
on a baitcasting reel. this handle is 95mm in length
with a 4mm thickness.

Power Handle

The other handle is a single EVA knob power handle

than can be set at a length of either 60mm or 70mm
depending on the users preference. Installing this
handle instantly transforms the reel into a jigging
reel.
Why the difference in handle lengths? Well, at certain angles a longer length gives you leverage allowing you to exert more force on the fish without
adding more strength. A longer handle also quickens the speed of retrieve. 1 turn of a longer handle
equals to more turns of the spool if compared to the
same spool being cranked with a shorter handle.

Remember Robotech?
Tough Frame
I am not sure how many of you are fans of Robotech.

The Salty Stage BV8 reminds me of the Mechas
with its sleek somewhat robotic looks. The gunmetal grey and chrome parts add to the Mecha outlook.
As with the Mechas, toughness is key. To hold everything steady the Salty Stage BV8 comes with a tough
and robust aluminium alloy frame that supports everything within it even under heavy pressure. This
allows the reel to continue working smoothly during
the fight with a brute.

Lightweight Spool
Drag Clicker
To cast lighter lures the Salty Stage BV8 comes with

a highly ported lightweight shallow spool. That said,
it is capable of taking in enough line for most types
of inshore casting or jigging. The spool is capable of
taking 220 metres of 10lb mono lines or 250 metres
of 10lb braided line.
When a big fish is stripping line out of your spool,

your adrenaline starts running and the excitement
begins. However, most baitcasting reels remain as
quiet as an electric car as lines get stripped away.
This reel screams and thus heightens the excitement level. Screaming reels add on a lot more fun.

Magnetic Brakes
Drag System
When it comes to casting, the Salty Stage BV8 uses

the Magtrax II magnetic brake system to control
the spool. Some of you may be wondering if the
magnets actually do what they are supposed to do
since magnets have no effect on aluminium; well
do refer to The Asian Angler January 2013 issue to
learn how they work.
These days most reels come fitted with carbon drag

washers. The Salty Stage BV8 is no different. It
comes with Abu Garcias long proven Carbon Matrix Drag system that has been powering the Abu
Garcia reels for many years now. The benefit is a
strong drag that remains smooth.

Lab Test
Equipment Used
Line: Berkley Fireline (fused)

Poundage: 20lb
Abu Garcia claims that the Salty Stage BV8 has a

max drag of 7kg. With that in mind we reeled a few
yards of 20lb fused line and secured it directly to the
anchor. We increased the drag to almost full and
pulled. Our meter showed that it exceeded the 7kg
mark while the drag remained smooth. We maxed it
and got it to 18.4lb or 8.3kg with the drag still smooth.
Summary
So far we only managed to put it through the lab test

and the results are good. However, we have yet to
see how it performs in the field. Lookout for our next
issue where we take it to the battle grounds and pit
it against some finned gladiators.

For The Aquaphobic
ry bags are super important to anglers especially those

who love to fish on boats, kayaks, and other watercrafts.
Even to those who love Fishing along jungle streams and
rivers.
Recently we tested out the Rodford Aquaphobic Camo
Dry Bag. To test the dry bag we drafted a plan. The bag
needs to be tortured and it need to be drowned. That way
we know for sure that it will be able to handle most situations not taking into consideration hardcore abuses.
Fooling About
First we took it to a field, allowed air to fill up, and

we sealed the bag. We then decided to play catch
and threw it about. It flew up high and crashed a
few times. Yes, we were abusing it and I admit to
that. Anyhow, after our fooling about we inspected
the bag and all seemed fine. Of course we do not
recommend that you throw your dry bags about like
we did.

Floating On A Stream
Having A Splash
Next we took the dry bag to a stream, threw the

mobile phone of the guy who decided to play ball
with the bag in, and threw it into the stream. Not a
deep one. Just one that is about two feet deep. We
allowed it to float about while we ate a sandwhich.
Out of nowhere someones kid sat on it thinking that
it would make a good boat but of course it didnt. He
just tumbled and ended up in the water while our
friend whos mobile phone is in the bag panicked a
little and accidentally let out an adult rated word.
Next the dry bag with the mobile phone inside was
given a splash. Not just a splash. The amount of water splashing on it was quite massive. Not as deadly
as the Niagara Falls but it will give anyone standing
beneath it a good massage and a pounding. Needless to say, our friend whos mobile phone is being
tortured in the bag felt like he had a bunch of red
ants his pants.

The Relief
Verdict
After about 15 minutes of being pounded by lots of

water we decided to end the torture, especially that
of our friend. We wiped the bag dry and handed it to
our tortured friend. He opened the bag, put his hand
in, and took out his mobile phone. That followed with
a smile. The phone survived the torture. Our friend
survived the torture too. So did the Rodford Aquaphobic Camo Dry Bag.
Personally I like the camo design. It also remained

dry inside despite the massive amounts of water
torture that it went through. Price wise, I find it to be
decent. One thing to note, before you put your expensive cameras, mobile phones, and other expensive gadgets, do test out your dry bag first to ensure
that the one you have is not defective. This goes
especially for waterproof pouches. We tested some
(other brands) and some did leak.

he Berkley Powerbait Swim Shad is one heck of

a bait. They are great baits for fishing snakeheads
especially the powerful and ferocious giant snakehead (toman). They look like real fish and swim like
a live fish.
Life Like
The weighted head of the Swim Shad helps with casting

allowing for greater distances. When it hit the surface
of the water it dives all the way to the bottom wiggling
its paddle tail giving the impression of a swimming fish.
This action has on many occasions generated a reaction
strike from predator fishes.

weighting system that serves two main purposes.

here are so many crank baits available. They come

in so many shapes and sizes and with many names given by various brands. They are called different things
in different places. In general they are designed to look
like fish such as bass, gar fish, ballyhoo, minnows, and
shads. There are also those resembling bugs and frods.
Minnows and Shads are some of the most widely used.

In general minnows come in a slimmer body design with

a longish profile. From the basic design, lure designers have created a variety of different body designs depending on the desired swim action of the lures. With
that comes new names and terms such as walkers, jerk
baits, etc.

In general shads come in a body design that is somewhat taller in the mid towards the 3rd quarter of the
front end; and with a shorter profile. Again designers
have created a variety of body designs based on the
basic shad design.
Frogs
Frog crankbaits are designed to look like a variety of

frogs. They are mainly top water swimmers. From these
designs a few other frog crankbaits varieties are available with some given a bill or a lip.

With lure designers having to out-design one and other we have now got a variety of crankbaits that can

Jointe
While most crankbaits come in one piece, there are

crankbaits that are jointed; meaning that they come in
two or more parts being joint together to make a lure.
This gives the lure a more lifelike swim action.

Lipless
Crankbaits come with a variety of bills or lips depending on the desired swim action as well as swim depth.
There are also crankbaits that do not have a bill or lip.
They are called lipless crankbaits. More about these
later.

Types
hen it comes to hooks the choices are a plenty

and can get quite confusing. Hooks come in various
forms or types for a host of different purposes. With
this issue let us take a look at some of the types of
hooks that are available in the market starting off with
the more common ones.
Chinu
hooks
One of the most used hooks these days are Chinu hooks.
They are amongst the favourite hooks used by bottom
bait anglers catching fishes such as mullets, breams,
tilapia, carp, and a host of many other fishes.

Chinu hooks have an eye that faces forward, meaning

that should you place it lying down on a flat surface, the
eye will be looking parallel to the flat surface. Should
you put a fishing line through it will be parallel to the flat
surface. The eye is very slightly bent backwards away
from the hook point. This is also known as tuned up
eye.

Chinu hooks come with a more rounded and offset bend.

An offset bend means that the hook point and the shank
are not aligned. This means that if you were to put the
hook lying down on a flat surface the hook will not lie
flat. The point is pointed slightly off to the right or the
left of the shank. This is said to allow for better hook up.

Beak
hooks
Another common hook used by bottom bait anglers is
the Beak hook. These hooks are used for fishing an array of fish both saltwater and freshwater species. Beak
refers more to the hook point and they come in a variety of names and types.
Beak hooks generally have a point that is curved upwards towards the shank. It looks somewhat like the
beak of a bird. Beak hooks come in all variety of hook
eyes from tuned up to spade ends (flat without hole).
Many of us take hooks for granted but as one get more
intimate with them one will understand more and be
able to choose hooks that are best suited for a certain
type of fishing.

Luring Snakeheads
eres my buddy, Azrin with his first snakehead. The

week before he scored a snakehead but it dropped right
before he picked it up. It took him one year of fishing to
finally score this snakehead. His hardwork finally paid off.
A healthy juvenile snakehead caught in light rain. This fish

was aggressive but very smart. It took one hour of casting
into the same area before it finally decided to give a bite.

Frog. I added a spinner to help attract snakeheads. I
am still excited to see a fish chase a frog just like the
first time seeing it. A snakehead will usually trail closely
behind the frog before blowing up on it.
A beautiful solid Striped Snakehead on the Abu Garcia Tournament K. This fish was caught on a popper
in some thick grass which was not much of a challenge for the Tournament K. I fought and landed it
with ease.
