One of my greatest joys and frustrations ever since I chose to become an Adventist almost 14 years ago
has been the music. My joys and frustrations have really been two fold. The first has had to do with
the way we as congregants sing our hymns, and the second has had to do with the way we as congre-
gants react to special items that are presented by others.
I will address the second point in this editorial and would like to begin with a question. When you are
sitting in church and a special item is rendered do you concentrate on the lyrical content of the item
being rendered? The reason I ask this seemingly ridiculous statement is that I have been amazed at
the number of items through the years that have been presented in our churches that have lyrics that
are not only unbiblical but are also contrary to the beliefs that we hold as congregants. What, to me,
has seemed a bigger crime than the sins of the singers, is that we, as congregants, have often given
hearty ―Amens‖ at the end of the rendition. I have been left wondering what exactly it is that we are
saying amen to. Are we really saying ―let the unbiblical item you just sang be so‖?
To give an example of the above; a group recently sang in our church a song about how atonement was
completed on the cross, and at its conclusion there was a robust amen given. Now, I know that this
erroneous belief which does away with the investigative judgement and Christ‘s ministry in the heav-
enly sanctuary has since the late 1950‘s found traction in our church, but it is my belief that it is not
mainstream within Africa, and more so in our congregation. In saying amen, we were basically saying
that we agree with the beliefs expressed in the song. The only ―excuse‖ I could come up with is that we
were concentrating so much on the music that the words and views expressed passed through our
heads without us even considering them.
This lack of concentration on the words of the music sung can also be easily tested by asking people,
after the service, what the songs sung were about. When I have done this in the past, I have realised
that people are more likely to remember the tunes used rather than the lyrics. This lack of concentra-
tion extends beyond the music to the sermons in that many of us, a week after the sermon, only re-
member the jokes (which should never be used in sermons), and the examples given rather than the
actual sermon content.

My challenge to all of us this month is simple. As we sit in the pews, on our chairs or on our benches,
listening to special items being rendered, may we both listen and hear what is being sung. May we
prayerfully seek to understand what is being sung. May we perceive much more than the tunes that so
easily dull our sensibilities. May we learn that it is not a duty for us to say amen at the end of a special
item, nor for that matter at the end of a sermon or prayer. May we realise that in saying amen we are
in fact agreeing with the words just uttered and truly saying ―let it be so‖.
Furthermore, as we render special items or sing hymns in the congregational setting in the coming
month, may we realise that we are engaged in an act of worship to our Saviour. May we prayerfully
seek understanding of the words that we are singing and sing only those things that be true and pure.
Above all else, may we ask the Holy Spirit to be with us daily as we meditate upon the Word, for it is
only in doing so that we will become grounded in what the Bible teaches to be truth. He will then
bring all these lessons to our remembrance as we sing and listen to songs sung.

I am a victim of incest; one of the "hard cases" for abortion. I
was raped by my father when I was fifteen years old. It was
not the first time, nor would it be the last. However, this time,
I became pregnant.
