Evaluation question 1
By Sumayyah Bailey

In what ways does you media product use, develop

or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?

Popie
Issue 23

My magazine is of the pop genre. I would say that it

challenges conventions. For example, other pop
magazines such as, We Love Pop, have a very busy
front cover and the colour scheme is multi-coloured.
However, my layout is slightly influenced by genre
Conventions. The masthead is at the top of the page,
As is my contents page title. The cover lies surround
The star, however there are only five. I chose to
Challenge conventions with my magazine as it
Makes it easier for the audience to understand and
Compels them to consume the text. This is an example of
Transparency in the utopian theory, which explains that an
Audience consumes a text because it is easy to understand.

To make up for challenged conventions, I used the name Popie

For the name of my magazine as it makes it easier for the
Audience to identify the genre of the text. This appeals to the
Target audience and, in a way, becomes iconography of the
Text. My magazine copies the use of conventions in Billboard for
my front cover. For example, this magazine tends to have a
minimalistic amount of cover lines and draws the audiences
attention to the star and masthead.

In terms of colour scheme, I used bright colours that are associated with the pop genre.
These colours stand out to the audience and compel them to consume the text. This is an
example of cultivation theory, which explains that if an audience sees a media product (in
my case, colour scheme) ,which is recognisable, again and again they will eventually
consume the text and be compelled.
I used pop genre conventions, when choosing the typography for my text. I used sans-serif
for the cover-lines, contents and text to stand out to the audience and I used serif for the
masthead and titles of the other two pages to appeal to the target audience (dominated by
females).
