Increasingbackpressuredoesnotmakepumpsworkharder.One
horsepoweristhemeasureofpowerittakestolift33,000poundsof
weightonefootinoneminute.Gallonsandweightarethesamethingtoa
pump.Restrictingtheflowfromthepumpwithavalve,backpressurewill
increase.Asbackpressureincreases,gallonsorweightdecreases.Asthe
weightorgallonsofthewaterbeingliftedbythepumpdecreases,sodoes
powerconsumption,amps,orhorsepower.Excessbackpressureisafree
byproductofhorsepower.Backpressuremakespumpspulllessamperage
notmore.Lessamperage,meansmotorsruncooler,uselesselectricity,
andlastlonger.
MinimumFlow?
WhileCycleStopValveswillincreasebackpressureonpumpswhen
needed,theywillneverletthebackpressureincreasetocompleteshutoff
head.TheCycleStopValvecannevercompletelyclose.Thereisalways
5GPMflowingthroughthevalveevenwheninthefullyclosedposition.
Thisflowisderivedfromtheminimumcoolingrequirementsofapump
andmotor.Largesubmersiblemotorscanoperatewithmuchsmallerflows
than(.5feetpersecond).FlowchartsformotorsrunningatFULLLOAD
AMPERAGEarenotrelevantformotorspullinganaverage60%offull
load.Asbackpressureincreasesuntilthepumpisonlypumpingminimum
flow,amperagedecreases,deratingthemotor.Pullingonly50to60%of
fullload,thederatedmotorcansafelypumphotwaterupto140degrees
accordingtothecharts.Ifaderatedmotorcansafelypumpanyamountof
140degreewater,thenatinyamountofcoolwater(86degreesorless)
willeasilypreventthemotorfromoverheating.Minimumcoolingcharts
forderatedmotors,havenotbeenmadeavailablebythemotor
manufacturer.Yearsofexperiencehasprovenmanytimesoverthatmotors
suchasa50HPsubwilldropfrom77ampstoabout40ampswhenthe
pumpisrestrictedto5GPMflow.This5GPMflowof70degreewater
goingpastthemotorwillincreaseintemperatureto78degrees.78

ThrustBearings?
Theloadonthrustbearingswillincreaseasthebackpressureincreasesthe
Kfactorontheimpellers.Bearingsinaircooledmotorsmustbeproperly
lubricatedanddesignedstrongenoughtohandlethemaximumKfactorof
thepump.Thefaninanaircooledmotorwillstillbespinningatfull
RPM,whichhelpstokeepthebearingscool.Atlowflowthepower
requiredbythepumpisreducedandthewindingsinthemotorproduce
lessheat.WiththefanstillspinningatfullRPMthishelpsreducetheheat
oftheentiremotor,whichincludesthethrustandradialbearings.With
watercooledmotorssuchassubmersibles,heatproducedisalsoreduced
becauseofthelowamperageproducedatlowerflowrates.Lessflowis
requiredtocoolthethrustbearingsasheatfromthewindingsatlowflow
isreduced,leavingmoreofthecoolingflowavailableforthebearings.
RadialDeflection?
RadialDeflectionincreasesoncentrifugalpumpsastheflowrate
decreases.Theimpellersonpumpswithasinglevolutetendtopushat
oddanglestothecutwatervaneasflowisdecreased.Aslongastheshaft
andradialbearingarestrongenoughtohandletheload,verylittleifany
deflectionispossible.Pumpcompaniesshouldnotmanufacturepumps
withshaftsthataretooslenderandbearingstooweaktohandlethis
deflection,unlessthepumpisdesignedwithplannedobsolescenceasa
primaryobjective.Pumpswithadiffuserringsuchassubmersibles,
turbines,andmultistagecentrifugalpumps,willequallydistributethe
dischargefromtheimpeller.Thismakesdeflectiontoanyoneparticular
sideimpossibleandradialdeflectionanonissue.
RestingPumpsandMotors?
Pumpsandmotorsaredesignedforcontinuousoperationanddonotneed
to"rest".Thismeanstheywilllastlongeriftheyruncontinuouslythanif
they"cycle"offandon.Motorsthatarecoastingalongatlowamperage24
hoursaday,willuselesselectricitythanthesamemotorpullingfullload
andcyclingonandoffevery10minutesorso.Mostmotorandpump
failuresoccurduringstartup.Startingcurrentcanbesixtimesnormal
runningamperage.Startingtesteverycomponentofthepumpandmotor.
Windings,bearings,shafts,impellers,splines,couplings,panels,eventhe
generatoratthepowercompanyarealltestedeachtimeapumpstarts.All
oftheseproblemsgoawayoncethemotorisupandrunning.Common
sensewouldsuggestthatthefewertimesitstartsandstops,thelongera
motorandpumpwilllast.
SoftStartEquipment?
CycleStopValveswillcompletelyeliminatewaterhammerwithor
withoutsoftstartequipment.Themainreasontousesoftstartequipmentis
toreducetheendrushofelectricityonpumpstartup.Thiswillreducethe
electricbillifademandchargeisincluded.Someelectriccompanies

requiresoftstartsonlargerhorsepowersystems.Whensoftstartcontrols
areneeded,anautotransformertypesoftstartwilldoanexcellentjobof
reducingendrushcurrents.Theseautotransformersoftstartersare
mechanicaldevicesthatwilleliminatetheproblemsassociatedwith
troublesomeelectronicsoftstartersandvariablespeeddrives.
Cavitation?
Restrictingthedischargefromapumpwithanyvalvewilldecreasethe
NPSHrequired.TheNPSHavailablewillincreaseastheflowrate
decreases.IncreasingtheNPSHAand/ordecreasingtheNPSHRreduces
thechanceofcavitation.Recirculatingwaterfromtheoutlettotheinletof
animpellercanoccuratlowflow.The5GPMbypassexitingtheCycle
StopValvewillkeepthisrecirculatingfromheatingupthepump.
Cavitationlikewearcanoccurifthepumpchosenhasarecirculating
problemsuchaswithaloosefittingwearring.Pumpsthataremadeof
materialswithahightensilestrengtharemoreresistanttowearfrom
cavitation.Whenequippedwithanadditionalpressuresustainpilotthe
CycleStopValvecanalsocontrolcavitationathighflowratesbylimiting
themaximumflowfromthepump.
