Walt Hester Trail-Gazette
The snow-covered peaks of the Continental Divide loom, yet beckon to residence and visitors to Estes Park.
Welcome to Estes Park
Special to the Trail-Gazette
Sitting in the shadow of
Longs Peak, Estes Park at-
tracts literally millions of visi-
tors each year. Summers are
particularly busy as tourists
flock to the beauty that is con-
tained in Rocky Mountain Na-
tional Park located just west
of town.
When Joel Estes first came
upon the Estes Valley in 1859,
he reportedly exclaimed, “We
were monarchs of all we sur-
veyed. We had the world all to
ourselves.”
Rocky Mountain National
Park is recognized as one of
the nation’s scenic treasures.
The diverse landscape encom-
passes a wide variety of habi-
tats ranging from lush moun-
tain meadows and dense
forests to the wind-swept, al-
pine tundra that comprises
more than one third of the
Park’s 426 square miles.
Estes Park is more than
just a beautiful place. It’s a
special town that casts its
spell on visitors who find
themselves wanting to call it
home.
Match Estes Park and the
Estes Valley’s natural magnifi-
cence with the ambition and
friendliness of its people, and
the result is a rich blend.
Nestled high in the Rocky
Mountains, Estes Park offers
exceptional restaurants, retail
outlets, art galleries, musi-
cians and dynamic theatrical
productions. Estes Park also
boasts an outstanding school
system, as well as many other
essential amenities.
Estes Park offers shopping,
fine dining and many recrea-
tional opportunities. There are
activities for the young and
young-at-heart, including go
carts, putt putt golf, a giant
slide and a plethora of hiking
trails.
Three main highways con-
verge on Estes Park, each of-
fering spectacular vistas. Colo-
rado Hwy. 7 comes in from
the south, offering views of
Marys Lake and Prospect
Mountain. U.S. Hwy 36, from
the southeast, provides over-
views of Lake Estes. U.S. Hwy
34, from the northeast, takes
nearly the same route

A day in the park
Special to the Trail-Gazette
Estes Park has a number
of parks to for the enjoyment
of residents as well as visi-
tors.
Bond Park
Bond Park is located next
to the town hall on Elkhorn
Avenue. Consisting of 46,000
square feet of open space,
the park is the centerpiece of
town. It provides picnic ta-
bles, benches, fire pit, drink-
ing fountain, and serves as a
primary town area for festi-
vals.
Children’s Park
With 2,500 square feet of
open space, this area is adja-
cent to La Casa shopping
complex and the municipal
parking lot. Located on the
west end of the Riverwalk,
the park offers playground,
restrooms, drinking foun-
tain, river frontage, picnic ta-
bles and benches.
Peacock and Tregent
Located at the west end of
Elkhorn Avenue, these open
space areas include picnic ta-
bles, drinking fountain,
benches, restrooms, trees,
flowers, cowboy sculpture
and adjacent parking.
Performance Park
Performance Park amphi-
theater is located at 417
West Elkhorn Ave. behind
Glassworks Studio. Perform-
ance Park was built in front
of a natural rock ledge and is
completely wired for sound
and lights. The Town of
Estes Park schedules numer-
ous events throughout the
summer at the outdoor ven-
ue.
Riverside/Baldwin
Park
Located off West Riverside
Drive, this 60,000 square feet
open space includes river
frontage, picnic tables and
benches, trees, flowers and
turf areas. Other amenities
include the Riverwalk, fish-
ing bridge and parking.
Riverside Plaza
The focal point of the Riv-
erwalk, Riverside Plaza is lo-
cated behind businesses in
the center of downtown on
East Elkhorn Avenue and
Riverside Drive. Riverside
Plaza features benches,
drinking fountain, water fea-
tures, three sculptures (ea-
gle, beavers, mountain lion),
adjacent parking, back door
retail entrances and river
frontage.
Visitor Center Park
Visitor Center Park is lo-
cated near the junction of
Highways 34 and 36 leading
into Estes Park. The park in-
cludes restrooms, drinking
fountain, picnic facilities,
trees, flowers, turf areas,
parking, access to Lake
Estes Trail, access to fishing
areas and river frontage.

Parks and recreation: the place to be
Special to the Trail-Gazette
The Estes Valley Recrea-
tion and Park District pro-
vides several venues for peo-
ple to choose from when it
comes to getting out and
having fun.
The District offers a 9-hole
and an18-hole golf course,
the Estes Park Aquatic Cen-
ter, adult and youth recrea-
tion programs, the Estes
Park Youth Center, and ac-
tivities at Lake Estes and the
Lake Estes Marina.
Estes Park Aquatic
Center
The pool has open swim-
ming daily with lap swim
available at different times.
Swimming and springboard
diving lessons: several ses-
sions are offered for all age
groups. American Red Cross
CPR/First Aid Classes are
also offered.
Recreation Summer pro-
grams for youth include ten-
nis, volleyball, instructional
baseball and girls’ softball,
and youth and family van
trips.
Golf
A round of golf in Estes
Park comes in two flavors:
the nine-hole variety, as
played at the Lake Estes Golf
Course, a comfortable nine-
hole that hugs Lake Estes
and is cut by the Big Thomp-
son River, and the 18-hole
variety available at the Estes
Park Golf Course. There are
likely to be elk on the side at
either course to share your
round with you, not to men-
tion the sort of scenery every
course this side of Pebble
Beach would kill for. And if
your tee shot seems to travel
a little farther than usual,
chalk it up to the thinner air
at 7,500 feet.
Estes Park Golf Course
The Estes Park Golf Course,
located at 1080 S. St. Vrain
Avenue (Colorado Highway
7), has been ranked among
the most scenic sets of links
in the country. The season
begins in mid-April, when
the play is punctuated by the
spring snows that bring
moisture to the course and
kick-start the green-up when
the sun hits the fairways,
and a wet April should give
the courses everything they
need to get the grass grow-
ing this year. By mid-June,
the 6,400-yard (from the blue
tees), par 71 is hitting peak
condition, which it maintains
well into September.
The course has a Pro Shop
and driving range, and a res-
taurant, and hosts about
30,000 rounds a season, in-
cluding numerous tourna-
ments. Tee times are recom-
mended, especially for a
morning round during the
peak summer months. Call
866-586-8146 ext. 0 for tee
times. Electric carts, pull
carts and clubs are available
for rental.
Lake Estes Golf
Course
The Lake Estes Golf
Course, located at 690 Big
Thompson Avenue (US 34),
plays at 2,209 yards from the
men’s tees, and par is 31. As
at the 18-hole course, tee
times are recommended dur-
ing the summer season —
call 970-586-8176. Pull carts
and clubs are available for
rental.
Some water makes a
round on the Lake Estes
Golf Course interesting, and
there are almost always a
few elk around — it’s a favor-
ite wintering spot for them,
and the spring green-up is
their salad bar. All told,
about 20,000 nine-hole
rounds are played at the
course annually.
Tee times at both courses
can be made up to seven
days in advance for week-
days, and on the Friday of
the previous weekend for
weekend reservations.
Walt Hester Trail-Gazette

programs.

Pathways of Estes Park
Special to the Trail-Gazette
There are numerous path-
ways around Estes Park that
allow easy foot access to the
public. Among the pathways
are:
Riverwalk
Begin at the Visitors Cen-
ter (500 Big Thompson Ave.)
and hike west into town
along the river. Take a seat
on the outdoor patio of an
Estes Park restaurant or cof-
fee shop. Enter shops from
the back door along the Riv-
erwalk and enjoy Estes Park
shopping and nature at the
same time. The Riverwalk
now extends west of Mo-
raine Avenue to Elkhorn
Avenue. The path continues
to Performance Park and be-
yond.
(The downtown Riverwalk
is a pedestrian only path.)
Lake Estes Trail Follow the
Riverwalk east from the Visi-
tors Center to Lake Estes.
Go the distance around the
lake (3.75 miles) or just en-
joy a short stroll. Wildlife
and magnificent views of
Rocky Mountain National
Park are the main attractions
of the Lake Estes Trail.
Fish Creek Trail
Enter Fish Creek Trail on
the southeast end of Lake
Estes. Go south approxi-
mately two miles along Fish
Creek Road past the high
school and the Estes Park
Golf Course all the way to
Scott Avenue. Look up and
enjoy the majestic view of
Longs Peak along the trail.
Knoll-Willows
Knoll-Willows Trail starts
at the north end of the Mu-
nicipal Building and winds
past the historic Birch Cabin
and up to the ruins. The ru-
ins feature views of Estes
Park and Rocky Mountain
National Park.
The other trailhead begins
at the top of Wonderview
Drive. Trails take hikers to
the ruins or down to Birch
Cabin and back into town.
Fall River Trail
Fall River Trail starts at
West Elkhorn Avenue at the
waterwheel. Walk west to
the outdoor Performance
Park amphitheater where
visitors enjoy music perform-
ances all summer long. The
trail continues west along a
wooded path on the Fall Riv-
er and will eventually link to
Rocky Mountain National
Park.

Full-time staff members in-

special programs. Public
meeting space and free In-
ternet access are also avail-
able.
Outreach programs are of-
fered for the homebound, vi-

nursing home patients and
local preschools. The second
floor of the library features a
rotating collection of artwork
from local artists every
month. The library’s primary
source of funding is district
