Shift Solenoid A/B Electrical Malfunction (Shift Solenoid Valve No.1/No.2)

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Shifting from 1st to O/D is done in combination with ON and OFF of the shift solenoid valves No.1 and No.2
controlled by ECM. If an open or short circuit occurs in either of the shift solenoid valves, the ECM controls
the remaining normal shift solenoid valve to allow the vehicle to be operated safely (Fail safe function).
Fail Safe Function:
If either of the shift solenoid valve circuits develops an open or a short, the ECM turns the other shift solenoid
ON and OFF to shift to the gear positions shown in the table below. The ECM also turns the shift solenoid
valve SL OFF at the same time. If both solenoids are malfunction, hydraulic control cannot be done electronically so it must be done manually.
Manual shifting as shown in the following table must be done. (In the case of a short circuit, the ECM stops
sending current to the short circuited solenoid).

Check the shift solenoid valve No.1 when DTC P0753 is output and check the shift solenoid valve No.2 when
DTC P0758 is output.
DTC No.

DTC Detecting Condition

P0753
P0758

The ECM checks for an open or short circuit in the shift solenoid valves No.1 and No.2 circuit when it changes.
The ECM records DTC P0753 or P0758 if condition (a) or (b) is
detected once, but it does not light up the MIL.
After ECM detects condition (a) or (b) continuously 2 times or
more in one-trip, it causes the MIL light up until condition (a) or
(b) disappears.
After that, if the ECM detects condition (a) or (b) once, it starts
lighting up the MIL again.
(a) Solenoid resistance is 8 Ω or less short circuit when solenoid is energized
(b) Solenoid resistance is 100 kΩ or more open circuit when
solenoid is not energized

connect the OBD II scan tool or TOYOTA hand-held tester to DLC3 on the vehicle. this second detection causes the MIL to light up. and read off various data output from the vehicle’s ECM. The OBD II scan tool or TOYOTA hand-held tester also enables you to erase the DTCs and check freezed frame data and various forms of engine data. (For operating instructions. see the OBD II scan tool’s instruction book. the only difference from the usual troubleshooting procedure is that you connect the OBD II scan tool complying with SAE J1978 or TOYOTA hand-held tester to the vehicle. To check the DTCs. In addition to the MIL lighting up when a malfunction is detected.) DTCs include SAE controlled codes and Manufacturer controlled codes. OBD II regulations require that the vehicle’s on-board computer lights up the MIL on the instrument panel when the computer detects a malfunction in the computer itself or in drive system components which affect vehicle emissions. the malfunction is temporarily stored in the ECM memory. (See page DI-24 ) If the malfunction does not reoccur in 3 trips. and also has a check mode for technicians to simulate malfunction symptoms and perform troubleshooting. If the same malfunction is detected again during the second test drive. the applicable DTCs prescribed by SAE J2012 are recorded in the ECM memory. 1997 SUPRA (RM502U) Author: Date: 546 . SAE controlled codes must be set as prescribed by the SAE. (TOYOTA hand-held tester) (See page DI-318 ) *2 trip detection logic: When a logic malfunction is first detected. By switching the ECM to check mode when troubleshooting. the MIL goes off but the DTCs remain recorded in the ECM memory. (a) FI6914 TOYOTA Hand-Held Tester DLC3 Q08242 DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM Description When troubleshooting OBD II vehicles. the technician can cause the MIL to light up for a malfunction that is only detected once or momentarily. (See DTC chart on page DI-330 ) The diagnosis system operates in normal mode during normal vehicle use. while Manufacturer controlled codes can be set freely by the manufacturer within the prescribed limits. Most DTCs use 2 trip detection logic (*) to prevent erroneous detection.DI-318 DIAGNOSTICS - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (2JZ-GE) DI4TZ-01 PRE-CHECK 1.

(3) Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the OBD II scan tool or TOYOTA hand-held tester switch ON. For codes on the DTC chart subject to ”2 trip detection logic”. the MIL lights up and the DTCs are recorded in the ECM. (4) Use the OBD II scan tool or TOYOTA hand-held tester to check the DTCs and freezed frame data. it erases all DTCs and freezed frame data recorded in normal mode. Then repeat the simulation process again. the MIL should go off. the diagnosis system has detected a malfunction or abnormality in the system.
