andteambuilding.EachSeptember,anewChallengeisunveiledtoFIRSTLEGOLeague(FLL)teamsacrosstheworld.Then,overthecourse

The"windsofchangeareblowing"andwiththemcomesFIRSTLEGOLeague's2008ClimateConnectionsChallenge!Joinusasweexplore
whymanyexpertsbelievetheearth'sclimateischangingandhowthesechangesimpactyouandourplanet.Thecauses,contributions,and
consequencesareallinterconnectedandtheexpertsaretellingusto"thinkgloballyactlocally."People,resources,andlocalactionsneedto
beunitedtoestablishaglobalgameplan.DoFIRSTLEGOLeagueteamshavewhatittakestomaketheseglobalClimateConnections?

Howtoorganizeateam
TheCoaches
Technologyprofessionalsareanexcellentchoicefortheroleofcoachtogetherwithteachersandparents.EachFLLteamismentoredby2to
3coaches,ofwhomonemustberegisteredatSDN.Thecoaches'roleistofacilitateinstructionandoptimizethelearningexperienceofthe
teammembersbyallowingindependentthought.Thecoachesmustbe18yearsorolderandshouldpossessthefollowingabilities:thedesire
toexploresidebysidewithchildren,goodcommunicationskills,prioritizingskills,andmultitaskingskills.Coachesdonotneedtechnical
expertisebutmustbewillingtoacquiresomebasicknowledgeoftheprogrammingenvironmentandLEGOrobotbuilding.Asaregisteredteam,
thecoacheswillhaveaccesstosoftwareandbuildinginstructionalmanualsfromFLL.
Thecoachesareaskedtokeepthemselvesandtheirteamalwaysintheloop.Therefore,theyaretocheckregularlytheiremailsandthe
internationalFLLhomepagewww.firstlegoleague.orgforcurrentinformation.Theyareresponsibleforregisteringtheirteamofficiallyatthelocal
FLLpartnerassoonastheyhavereceivedtheconfirmationofparticipationbySAP,andforfindingthespacetopracticewiththeteam.

TheTeam
AnFLLteamconsistsof5upto10memberswhomustbebetweentheagesofnineand14(tenand16inEurope).FLLteamscanbepartofa
schoolclassroom,afterschoolprogram,extracurriculargroup,homeschool,neighborhoodgroup,cluborcivicorganization.

TimeCommitment
InAugust,therobotsetwillbesenttoeachregisteredteamcoachbyGlobalCorporateSocialResponsibility.Thenteamscanstartmeeting
andexploringthesystem.However,theofficialcompetitiondoesnotbeginuntilSeptember5thwhenteamsreceivetheirofficialtaskandthe
fieldsetupkitfromtheirregionalFLLpartner.Teamsthensetouttocreatearobotthatfulfillstheserequirementsexactly.
Typically,teamsmeetonceortwiceaweektocompletetheirassignment,committingapproximately46hoursperweek(anoccasional
SaturdayorSundayisoftenaddedforthoseteamsgettingclosertotheirtournament).
InNovemberorDecember2008(insomecountriesonlyinearly2009),theFLLteamsmeetinlocalcompetitionstopresenttheirrobotsand
researchresults.DatesforlocalcompetitionsandthenationalchampionshipwillbeannouncedlaterintheyearbyyourlocalFLLpartner
organization.
