“ #3. The One and Only True LOVE ”

John 3:16 (NASB) 16"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Agape- (Unconditional, self-emptying, selfless, unconditionally 100% reliable, never

failing, Love.)

Phileo- (Close human affection, conditional, unreliable, based on selfish motives, failing,
based on your status and on materialistic things)

Ephesians 2:1-6 (NASB) 1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you
formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the
power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3Among
them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh
and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4But God, being
rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5even when we were
dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been
saved), 6and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in
Christ Jesus,

Titus 3:3-7 (NASB) 3For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived,
enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful,
hating one another. 4But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind
appeared, 5He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in
righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and
renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ
our Savior, 7so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the
hope of eternal life.

John 13:37 (NASB) 37Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I
will lay down my life for You." 38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for Me?
Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

failing, Love.)

Phileo- (Close human affection, conditional, unreliable, based on selfish motives, failing,
based on your status and on materialistic things)
John 21:15-17 (NASB) 15So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love (Agape) Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes,
Lord; You know that I love (Phileo) You " He said to him, "Tend My lambs." 16He said
to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love (Agape) Me?" He said to
Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love (Phileo) You." He said to him, "Shepherd My
sheep." 17He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love (Phileo) Me?"
Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love (Phileo) Me?"
And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love (Phileo) You "
Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep.

Matthew 5:43-45 (NASB) 43"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE
YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.' 44"But I say to you, love your enemies and
pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in
heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the
righteous and the unrighteous.

Matthew 19:16-22 (NASB) 16And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good
thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?" 17And He said to him, "Why are you
asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter
into life, keep the commandments." 18Then he said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus
YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." 20The young man said to Him, "All these things I
have kept; what am I still lacking?" 21Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go
and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and
come, follow Me." 22But when the young man heard this statement, he went away
grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

John 9:30-34 (NASB) 30The man (the healed blind man) answered and said to them
(Pharisees) "Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and
yet He opened my eyes. 31"We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is
God-fearing and does His will, He hears him. 32"Since the beginning of time it has never
been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33"If this man were not
from God, He could do nothing." 34They answered him, "You were born entirely in sins,
and are you teaching us?" So they put him out.

Romans 5:5-10 (NASB) 5and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has
been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6For
while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will
hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare
even to die. 8But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we
shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10For if while we were enemies we
were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been
reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

1 John 4:16-18 (NASB) 16We have come to know and have believed the love which God
has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in
him.17By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of
judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but
perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is
not perfected in love.

Romans 8:38-39 (NASB) 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels,
nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor
depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God,
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
