Policy IB.1

The Falls Church City Public School Board is committed to providing an inclusive educational
and working environment which values the diversity of its students, employees and prospective
employees, expects tolerance and respect for self and others, and encourages the life-long
learning which results from interactions among people with a wide variety of backgrounds,
talents, experiences, cultures etc. The School Board fully supports the requirements of federal
and state law in the arena of non-discrimination, but believes that beyond the legal requirements,
one goal of the school division should be to create an environment which nurtures diversity. The
Board recognizes that conflicts may arise among the members of a diverse school community,
however, all community members are expected to work toward tolerant, respectful co-existence
within the community. While disagreements may occur, they need not occur disagreeably.

The School Board is committed to a policy of non-discrimination in relation to race, color, sex,
age, religion, disability, national origin, marital status, or sexual orientation. This policy will
prevail in all its written policies and procedures, and implementation thereof, concerning staff,
students, community members, educational programs and services, and individuals with whom
the Board does business. The School Board and staff will promote good human relations by
prohibiting discrimination in employment, and in personnel matters, in location and use of
facilities, in educational offerings and instructional materials.
