2 About Vista Plus

Vista Plus is a client/server application for distributing, viewing, and managing reports and documents
online. It allows you to automatically capture corporate reports as soon as they are generated and
store them in a central report warehouse. Users throughout your enterprise can connect to the
warehouse with Windows or browser-based viewer clients to access business-critical data as soon as
reports are generated.

2.1 New Features

Vista Plus 6.0 is a major feature release. The significant new features and enhancements to existing
features are described briefly below.
Important
Vista Plus 6.0 server is supported on Windows 2008 and 2012 hosts
only. It is not supported on any version of UNIX or Linux, or Windows
2003.

2.1.1 Support for Windows Server 2008 and 2012

Vista Plus 6.0 is supported on Microsofts newest server operating systems, Windows 2008 and
Windows 2012. Note that while it is supported on 64-bit operating systems, Vista Plus 6.0 remains a
32-bit application. Transitioning Vista Plus to be a native 64-bit application is planned for later in the
Vista Plus 6 series.

2.1.2 Updated MySQL Database Software

Vista Plus 6.0 replaces the older MySQL version that was used with Vista Plus 5.5.x with the latest
MySQL 5.6 release. This adds several years worth of bug fixes and enhancements for MySQL users.
In addition, MySQL 5.6 is a 64-bit database application, which can increase performance. In our
internal testing with the new version, we saw significant performance improvements in many
database-related operations. The supported version of MySQL is included with the Vista Plus
software, and can be installed during a complete installation of the server or as a separate custom
installation option, as described in the next section.

2.1.3 Support for Remote MySQL Database Installation

All Vista Plus 5.x versions required that, if you used MySQL as the database software, it had to be
installed on the same host as the Vista Plus server software. This prevented Vista Plus from realizing
the performance benefits that can result from having dedicated server and database hosts. Vista Plus
6.0 allows you to install the supported version of MySQL on a separate database host.
If you want to install MySQL on a separate host, you can do so using the Vista Plus installation
program before you install the Vista Plus server software. Select a Custom installation type, and

select only MySQL as the component. Then, when you install the Vista Plus server software on its
host, you will be able to enter connection information for the remote MySQL installation. Follow the
detailed instructions in the Vista Plus Server Installation Guide.

2.1.4 Updated PostScript and PCL Parsers

All Vista Plus 5.x versions included two parser versions for capturing PostScript files and two for
capturing PCL files. These were known as the 4.x and 5.x parsers. Vista Plus 6.0 replaces the old 4.x
parsers with new 6.x parsers for both PCL and PostScript captures. The new parsers incorporate
updated versions of third-party software packages, which include fixes and enhancements that allow
more files to be captured accurately. The new PCL parser allows Vista Plus to capture PCL6 and
PCL-XL files, which were not supported by the earlier parser.
The 5.x parsers remain available, but we recommend that you use the 6.x parsers unless there is a
specific reason not to. See Upgrade Instructions Vista Plus 5.5.2 to Vista Plus 6.0 for more
information and instructions about transitioning to the new parsers. See the Server Administration
Guide or the Server Admin client online help for descriptions of the new formatting (-i) options
available during capture.

2.1.5 Ability to Re-index a Range of Generations

We have enhanced the vadmin Reindex command. You can now specify a range of dates or a range
of generation IDs and vadmin will re-index only the generations in that range for the specified report.
This enhancement is for vadmin re-indexing only. Re-indexing through Web View or the Windows
Client still affects either all generations of the report or only the open generation.

2.2 Deprecated Feature

2.2.1 Vista Plus Windows Client
We plan to discontinue active support for the Vista Plus Windows Client in Vista Plus 6.1. We will
continue to make the Windows Client available, and we believe its behavior will not change. However,
we will not make any more enhancements to it or provide fixes for any problem that may be found
after version 6.1 is released. We are giving advance notice of this now so that customers who
currently use the Windows Client can begin planning their transition to Vista Plus Web View.

4 Supported Environments and Compatibility

This section provides details on supported platforms and software versions.
Important! All Vista Plus components are supported only with released versions of underlying
software. Using Vista Plus with any beta or pre-release version of a host operating system,
Web browser, or other required software is not supported.
These software versions were supported when this document was published. However, we
can effectively support Vista Plus only with software versions that are also supported by their
suppliers. Therefore, if a software vendor drops support for one of the listed versions, we will
no longer be able to support Vista Plus with that version.
Although we use virtual environments when developing and testing Vista Plus, we do not
specifically develop for or test Vista Plus with any virtual server environment, such as
VMware, or desktop virtual environment, such as Citrix. Therefore we do not list specific
virtual environment versions and configurations. We do, however, continue to provide the
same level of support described in the OpenText Maintenance Handbook for customers who
run Vista Plus in these virtual environments.

5.2.1 New Parsers and Re-indexing

Vista Plus 6.0 includes updated PCL and PostScript parsers, as discussed in section 2.1.4, Updated
PostScript and PCL Parsers. The existing 5.x parsers are also provided, and you can continue to use
them to capture your existing reports. If you choose to use the new 6.x parsers, please keep the
following in mind:

While this has not occurred in our testing, in some cases, changing to the new parser may cause
report text to move slightly on the page. This is especially true if you also change the printer
driver. For this reason, you should carefully test all reports that use bounding box capture rules to
make sure that they still capture correctly.

Because the text can move slightly, you must also check the index bounding boxes and values for
all area and column indexes. If the values that you want to index have moved, you may need to
modify the index definition to match the new location. While this should not be needed in most
cases, it is critical that you check, since incorrect index values will keep searches and page
security from working correctly and could compromise sensitive data.
If you do need to modify an index definition for this reason, and there are still report generations
on-line from before you changed to the new parser, do not re-index all generations of the
report. Doing so would use the new index definition for generations which were captured with the
old parser, resulting in incorrect values for those older generations.

For these reasons, you may want to continue to use the 5.x parsers for existing reports where the
location of data on the page is important until you can thoroughly test the new parsers.

5.2.2 Web View Email Favorites

The definition of a Web View email favorite contains the host name and port number of the Vista Plus
server, because that information is needed to create the URL which is included in the email
notification when a generation is captured. Because upgrading to Vista Plus 6.0 includes moving to a
new server host, in most cases the host name and IP address will change. This will break any email
favorites created before the move to the new server. For users, this means two things:

The URL in any email favorite messages sent for any generation captured before the upgrade
and move will no longer work.

They need to remove the report as an email favorite, then make it a favorite again. This recreates
the record for the favorite with the new host and port. Until they do this, the URLs in any
messages generated by the favorite will not work, as they will still contain the old host name. How
to remove and add email favorites is described in the Web View online help.

This can be avoided if you reconfigure your network so the new Vista Plus server host has the same
host name as the old one, but in many cases this is not practical.

12

5.2.3 No Windows Client Upgrade

To install the Vista Plus 6.0 Windows Client, you must first uninstall the 5.5.2 Windows Client through
the Windows Control Panel. You cannot upgrade the Windows Client from an earlier version to 6.0. If
you try to upgrade, it will fail with an error message.

6 Fixed Issues
Vista Plus 6.0 accumulates all issues fixed since version 5.5.2, including updates to all major
components of the product. It includes all patches found in the 5.5.2.86 Patch Set release, plus
all other patches to Vista Plus up through 19, 2014; patches created after that date may not be
included. If you are interested in whether the resolution for a particular unlisted issue is included in
6.0, please contact OpenText Technical Support.

7 Known Issues
The following known issues exist in this release:

Multiple concurrent captures: Vista Plus supports concurrent capturing of multiple files.
However, more than four concurrent captures can cause the captures to fail with database errors.
If you encounter this problem, we recommend you limit the number of concurrent file captures. If
you use Vista Plus Output Manager to send files to Vista Plus, you can use Output Managers
MaxJobSetting parameter to limit the number of concurrent jobs.

Web View download columns: There are two issues when creating and editing download
columns in Web View:

All users should be able to save download columns for their own use. However, while the
columns created by clicking Create Columns are saved, any edits made to the column
definitions are saved only for users with Modify or Delete permission.

If you change columns while the column editing pane is shown (by SHIFT+clicking a
different column heading), the column editing pane correctly switches to show information
for the newly selected column, but the old column remains highlighted in the generation
window. Any changes you make are applied to the newly selected column.

File System Size Limit: Vista Plus is a 32-bit application. Because of this, captures may fail if the
file system is larger than two terabytes, as Vista Plus will not be able to address some of the
locations in the file system. Do not attempt to capture files from a file system larger than 2 TB.

Extended Characters in Object Names and Descriptions: You cannot enter double-byte
characters in any Vista Plus object name, description, or any other field in any Vista Plus client.
Double-byte characters are used for many Asian languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, and
Korean.

Vista Plus 6.0 Release Notes

13

Extended Characters, Searching, and Indexing: While you can, in some cases, capture reports
which use double-byte character sets into Vista Plus (see Appendix C of the Vista Plus Server
Administration Guide), you cannot search for this text with any Vista Plus feature. If double-byte
characters are included in the area for an index, index entries are not created for them.

Viewing Frame-based Renditions: An HTML frame-based rendition of a report consists of a

frameset file and separate individual files for each page of the rendition. If this frameset file is
stored in your browsers cache, some Web servers do not correctly retrieve the new file after a
new rendition of the same report is created. This can prevent you from viewing the new rendition.
If this occurs, remove all files from your browsers cache and restart the browser.

Windows Client Errors When Switching Windows: If you switch to a different application
window while the Windows Client is performing a lengthy operation for example, while waiting
to display a folder which contains a large number of reportsthe Windows Client may terminate
with a memory-related error.

Long Folder Lists: In Browse view, Web View displays folder, report, and generation lists a page
at a time to improve performance. However, for technical reasons, it must download the entire
folder list from the Vista Plus server to the Web server before displaying the first page of the list.
This could cause a delay when there are a large number of subfolders in the current folder. This
is not the case for report or generation lists; they are downloaded to the Web server a page at a
time.

Downloading Large Reports as Text Files: When you use Web View to download extremely
large reportsin the area of 10,000 pages or moreas text files, the operation may fail when the
browser attempts to open the file. This is due to browser limitations. If you have this problem, you
can use Web Views Provide Link option when downloading the report so the browser does not
try to open the file after the download.
