AtthebeginningofJuly2015,therewere4,322hazardswithatotalareaof542.6sqkmrecordedinthenationalmineactiondatabase.During
thesetwoquarters,277hazardsmaking17.3sqkmwerereleasedandreturnedbacktocommunities.Howeveroverthepastsixmonths,the
nationwideMEIFCSsurveyresultedintheadditionof242previouslyunrecordedhazardswithanareaof63.7sqkm,bringingtheremaining
contaminationto4,287hazardsand589sqkmofcontaminatedareabythequartersend.

ISAF/NATOFiringRanges:Inadditiontotheabove,surveyandclearancearerequiredon66firingrangesbelongingtotheISAF/NATOtroop
contributingnationsandcoveringanareaof979.4sqkm.FromDecember2012toDecember2015,32suchhazardscoveringanareaof132.2
sqkmweresuccessfullyreleased.

Despite the drop off in mine/ERW


casualties, the human cost of pressure
plate IEDs turns into a significant concern
with an average of 84 casualties per month, recorded by UNAMA in the first half of 2015. According to the recent UNAMA report on the
ProtectionofCiviliansinArmedConflict,506civiliancasualties(251killedand255injured)frompressureplateIEDswererecordedbetween1
Januaryand30June2015,showinga38percentincreasefromthesameperiodin2014.Theaveragemine/ERWcasualtiesarerecorded38per
month, while the average PPIED casualties is 84 per month, that sums up to 112 civilian casualties per month; which is devastating and
unfortunate.

Under the terms of the APMBT victim activated pressureplate IEDs are considered AP mines; areas contaminated by IEDs are recorded as AP minefield.
Note:MAPAonlyclearsandrecordsIEDswhichareconsiderednolongerpartoftheconflict.Todate78IEDcontaminatedareashavebeencleared,&23remain.

TargetcommunitiesaretakenfromtheMAPAgazetteer,butduringthesurveytheMEIFCSteamshavecomeacrossanincreaseinnumberofcommunities.In
thesecondrow,outof45,252communities,26,650arenotinourgazetteerbutaresurveyedbytheMEIFCSteams.

Victim Assistance: The MAPA implementing partners collaborate with the three Afghan Government ministries that deliver disability
servicesandassistances.Theyare MinistryofLabor,SocialAffairs,MartyrsandDisabled(MoLSAMD),MinistryofPublicHealth(MoPH),and
MinistryofEducation(MoE).Thesetwoquarters15,083civilianvictimsoftherecentconflicts,mine/ERWsurvivorsandotherpersonwith
disabilitywereprovidedwithVAanddisabilitysupportservices;andwiththisthetotalnumberofpeoplewhohavereceivedtheseservices
since1386(2007)is383,298.

DeviceDestruction:ThetablebelowshowsvariousexplosiveitemsdestroyedbytheMAPAimplementingpartnersandtheGovernmentof
theIslamicRepublicofAfghanistan.

Workforce: The MAPA workforce totals just over 5,100 humanitarian and another 5,400 commercial personnel working to make

deliveringactivitiessuchassurveyandmineclearance,mine/ERWriskeducation,victimassistance,capacitybuilding,advocacy,monitoring
andevaluation.Outofthetotal,17humanitarianNGOs(AABRAR,AARJapan,ALSO,ARCS,ATC,CCD,DAFA,DAO,DDG,FSD,HALOTrust,HI,
KOO,MCPA,MDC,OMAR,andSI)and5commercialcompanies(ADC,SDA,SDC,UADC,andWDC)wereoperationalduringthesequarters.
