You have been asked to prepare a booklet and leaflet that could be
displayed in a Clinic or doctors waiting room to inform the public
about reproductive and gene technologies. In addition you will prepare
a report for health workers about ethical dilemmas associated with this
technology and you will assess the advantages and disadvantages of
the technologies.

Task 3 (P5, P6, M3, D2)

Produce an information booklet and a leaflet to outline the principles of
reproductive and gene technology and their implications for individuals,
society and the environment (P5). Then produce a report to explain the
ethical dilemmas that may arise from gene and reproductive technologies
(P6) and analyse them (D2) and assess the advantages and
disadvantages of these technologies (M3).

Make sure you include the following:

In the information booklet outline what is available and give the
implications of techniques for contraception, assisted reproduction,
screening to check the babys development before birth, screening parents
and babies for a genetic disorder and to check identity when in dispute eg,
paternity.
In the leaflet outline of genetic engineering - Human Genome Project,
DNA analysis, gene therapy, recombinant DNA and genetic profiling,
together with the implications in producing useful chemicals like
pharmaceuticals and industrial enzymes, disease or pest resistant crops,
identifying matching tissue types for transplants and identifying an
individual involved in criminal activity through forensic evidence (P5).
In the report explain ethical dilemmas that arise for individuals who may
need to decide whether to make use of this technology. Consider their
quality of life, confidentiality, rights and responsibilities. Also consider the
dilemmas that affect family members, carers, scientists, professionals and
government, and the regulation of this technology (P6). Then assess the
advantages and disadvantages of these technologies for individuals and
society in relation to health and wellbeing (M3). Go on to analyse the
ethical dilemmas arising from reproductive and gene technologies using
examples (D2).
