Failure is often a very demoralizing experience that causes discomfort and disillusionment that

can be psychologically and emotionally devastating. Failure is a common experience for any
person and is an ordinary part of life. But while failure can be a psychologically paralyzing
experience to have, the emotional pain that one can sustain from it can increase the opportunity
for success. This essay will examine how failure can both contribute to and impede success.
Most of the people who have made it to the top of their field had to go through difficult obstacles
throughout their lives before they triumphed. Carter (2013), points out that there is one common
element that allowed successful people to succeed despite countless struggles and failures that
element is grit. Grit is a non-cognitive trait that flares up the passion within an individual to
never look away from a long-term goal. People who exhibit a certain level of grit do well in
dealing with failures owing to their mentality that failures make them wiser and stronger
(Ombelets 2014). Failure is a necessity, a misstep that drives someone to seemingly
insurmountable experience but eventually teaches valuable lessons to help that person recover
and become stronger (Parry 2014).
When experience in childhood failure can help develop resilience for the childs future. It is
important for children to fail (Parry 2014; Ombelets 2014) because it develops in a person the
resiliency needed to succeed in extremely challenging circumstances. Resilience is important to
success. Carter (2014) notes, without resilience, teens may turn to negative coping methods
such as alcohol or drugs, resort to self-harming, or become depressed. Over time, the people
who have become very successful in their fields experienced failure so many times. It is an
important ingredient to success because it subliminally motivates the ego to work harder and do
better: Carter (2013) notes, it is grit that makes our heroes face down their dragons and persist

in the face of difficulty, setbacks, failure, and fear. People who have established a solid
foundation of grit and resilience in themselves often see failure as an opportunity rather than a
difficult experience.
There is a problem with putting a positive response to failure is which is often a subliminal
experience that can get to the depth of emotional stability. Once failure is experienced, it might
even be longer to think of it positively than for it to have completely downgraded ones self and
capacities. Because of its subliminal nature, where it usually is not noticed that it is direly
affecting somebody, it poses a threat to eventual success. People can subconsciously categorize
themselves lower than their real capacities and that presents a potential threat to future success
(Winch 2014). Failure can be damaging to success because as people experience it, they tend to
develop unfounded conclusions about themselves, questioning their capacities and their abilities
to succeed (Winch 2014). Furthermore, the pain that one sustains from failure may exacerbate
towards certain psychological or emotional breakdown that would eventually take its toll on the
persons drive for success. More often than not, these negative self-images people create of
themselves may turn into a habitual tendency that would make it harder for people to recover
from or re-conceptualize failure once they experience it.
To conclude, While many perceive failure as a debilitating and paralyzing experience, it actually
creates an avenue for people to learn things, recover, and then become stronger. It has been found
that failure develops resiliency and grit, which in return would help an individual to go through
obstacles despite extreme situations something that would lead someone to success. As Carter
(2013) notes, were better off when we see a challenge not just as an inconvenience or injustice
but as a chance for what Campbell calls a boon, or dramatic win.
