8. While moving data, instead of "cut-paste", use "copy-delete":
If you are moving files from an external drive, usb or your phone, to your
computer (or vice-versa), instead of doing cut-paste, you should first copy the
contents, and after copy is complete, delete the contents from the source.
Reason: While cut-pasting, if by chance the wire connecting your computer
to the external drive is ejected from the PC, the entire cut-paste process will
stop. This will almost all the time, result in loss of data. There might have been
some file which had been moved partially, while the remaining half was still in
the source drive. This might corrupt the file and make it no longer usable.
To avoid this situation, you should first copy from the source to destination,
and after copy is complete, delete the contents from the source. This keeps the
data in the source intact, so you can start copying from fresh even if the wire
connecting it was ejected.

I would like show how you can increase your daily productivity on Windows
PC with few tools(also the combination of them) and tricks.
For better understanding please install the tools and then reread the post . Do
not forget to explore. I bet you are gonna like it
Tool-1 . Listary
Download Link:: Keep files at your fingertips
(Once you install, Listary runs in background and you can use it on any file
explorer window just by typing keywords)
1. Fuzzy Navigation/Fuzzy search: Search any folders/files (assuming
you remember some part of the file/folder name) you need, from the current
directory you are in.

(13) As a computer science student, what can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my life? - Quora

Observe in the above image, where I searched for a different folder which
is not present in current working directory.
Observe how fuzzy search worked here when I searched by typing 'show
emi'. Hope you got it.
Y ou can browse through the search results using 'tab' key.
It has lot of other cool features, Try these:
Search 'cmd'. (you can open the command line in the current working
directory with ease)
Search 'Notepad.exe"
If you work with particular folder very often, you can add them to the
favorites and define a shortcut key to open it.
Listary works in almost all explorer windows.
NOTE: Install the latest version for the fuzzy navigation feature.

Name says it all.
Features:
Copy paste across different folders efficiently
Move files from one folder to another by 'Drag&Drop'
Navigate through different views using tab key.
Avoids cumbersome switching between windows using 'Alt-Tab'
Listary works with Q-Dir !

Tool-3. TaskSpace
Download Link:: don't waste your time on Alt+Tab switching
(this tool is not so reliable, but some times works out for my needs)

Merge different application into single windows.(see picture below).
Shortcut to add the application to the TaskSpace - (Ctrl+Shift+M)
Avoid using 'Alt-Tab' switching between windows.
Y ou can combiningly use Tool-1 to Tool -3

Trick-1 :: Get the complete path of file/folder
Select the folder/file 'shift + right click' (assuming right handed mouse
operations) see the option 'copy as path'. The file path is copied to clipboard
Also you can also see 'Pin to Start Menu' option which you can use as well.

Soumadeep Mazumdar, I write long answers.
Two little things you can learn in about 5 minutes each.
The grep

command.

Assuming you run a UNIX based system (if you don't, you should), this is
one command line utility function you should know. Basically it does a
simple Regular expression search. How can that be useful?

1. How many times have you had a bunch of codes on a system and you
were wondering which line in which file is messing up the output file? So,
www.quora.com/As-a-computer-science-student-what-can-I-learn-right-now-in-just-10-minutes-that-could-be-useful-for-the-rest-of-my-life

11/16

7/26/15

(13) As a computer science student, what can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my life? - Quora

now you just find that out using,
$ grep output.txt *.cpp

2. It works great with Regular expression s too. But, for that you need to
learn a bit about those. So, we'll skip that. How about the number of times
you were wondering which APT , or Y UM background process is taking
up the system lock and not allowing updates. Simply filter all the current
running processes on you system.
$ ps -Al | grep apt

Similarly, if you want to find out if your firewall service is running or not,
we take refuge in the shadow of the almighty grep .
$ service --status-all | grep firewall

3. Huge big-ass file of maybe raw data, and you want to find out if it has
even one mention of your name or not, and perhaps you'd also like to find
the line numbers where you were mentioned. Ta-da.
$ grep -n soumadeep bigdata.txt

4. Got a huge movie or TV series collection like mine (3 TB), and your friend
asks you if you have that particular episode of that particular TV series and
you are just too lazy to search it, and your computer is just too slow to do a
search, or if you just remember the name of the director, or maybe just the
episode number. Nothing is too tough with this.
Search using folder name or year of release.
$ ls | grep foldername

Search using name of director or episode number even in sub-folders.
$ find | grep Nolan

(13) As a computer science student, what can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my life? - Quora

The grep command will search for anything and everything on your system,
from exact words to files and folders. Try using it with other variants like cat ,
etc., and you are in complete access over your system via command line.
Macro , and Code completion in editors.
So, we all know the C macros, which replaces a particular line with a
bunch of code we specify at the beginning to save us the torture of writing
long lines again, and again. Imagine if that were available while coding?
Sure our basic "copy-paste" helps, but sometimes, you need to execute a
specific set of commands in a specific order, and the Ctrl button group just
won't do. Macros and code completion options are available in every
modern editors. Be it Notepad++ , gedit or Kate . Y ou could save up
your macros and acronyms and the next time you write a piece of code,
you could just type the acronym and press tab or space, and voila, you
have your code. Of course, IDE s support that by default. But, you can
also modify their macros, and code completion tables or add new ones of
your own. Sorry, I couldn't put in examples, since every editor has it's own
way of doing it and attaching so many screenshots would be wasteful.
Watch some tutorials and you'll be writing codes faster than you type
Facebook messages.

(13) As a computer science student, what can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my life? - Quora

Here's what you will (start to) learn:
Put yourself out there
Handle fear
Handle rejection if they aren't interested
Conversation
Meeting somebody new
Programming is a social activity, and communication is critical.
Going to an interview or selling a product requires putting yourself out there.
Programs are built for people. Y ou need to learn what they want, even when
they don't know themselves.
Y ou will get rejected from companies and customers. Y ou need practice to
gracefully handle that.
Networking will land you jobs, customers, and many other opportunities. But
first you need to meet and converse with these strangers.
It might seem weird at first, but dating is trial-by-fire for learning many
selling, negotiation, communication, and fear management techniques. Y ou
will need them. Might as well start practicing now.

In Windows, you don't need to open cmd prompt and use 'cd' command to go

Instead, Go to the folder where you want to open the command window. Press
'Shift key' + 'RightClick'. Y ou can see the pop-up as shown below which

Click that and problem solved !
EDIT : Y ou may also try Alt+D, then type 'cmd' and then press Enter, if you
want keyboard only solution as pointed by Senguttuvan Ganesan.
