SHORT STORY CRITICISM AND EXPLICATION

This guide is designed to give an idea of the types of library information resources that
may be used for research on subjects relating to SHORT STORY CRITICISM AND
EXPLICATION. Under each type some of the works are listed. Other works can be
found in the areas where there are located.

CRITICISM AND EXPLICATION

Twentieth-Century Short Story Explication, 1900- Ref PN 3373 .W33 This multivolume
set is arranged by the years when the criticisms/explications were published. Each
volume is arranged by the author’s name and sub arranged by the name of the work. It
includes entries in books and journals.
American Short-Fiction Criticism and Scholarship, 1959-1977: A Checklist Ref PS 374
.S5 This indexes criticisms in books and journals. It is arranged by author’s names and
sub arranged by named work.
Magill’s Bibliography of Literary Criticism Ref PN 523 .M25 This indexes criticisms in
books and journals. The set is arranged by author’s names and sub arranged by named
work.
Critical Survey of Short Fiction Ref PN 3321 .C7 Researchers should use the index in
volume 7 or in the supplement to located criticisms of specific works.
Masterplots II: Short Story Series Ref PN 3326 .M27 This set is arranged by the titles of
the works. In addition to the plots of the short stories, it includes information on “Themes
and Meanings’ and “Style and Technique.”
MLA International Bibliography Ref PN 45 .M65 This annual two-volume edition locates
criticism worldwide. It is not limited to English language publications. Researchers
should look under the author’s name in volume 2: Subject Index. They should then note
the citation volume and paragraph number(s) and look for these in the first volume.
Entries are arranged by criticism on broad topics, followed by entries on specific cited
works.
Literature Criticism from 1400 to 1800 Ref PN 86 .L53 This multivolume set includes
criticism of the works written by authors who died before 1800. Researchers should
check the most recent Title Index to locate criticism. Within the collection of essays
pertaining to a specific author within a volume, the oldest are provided first, the others
are given in chronological order.
Nineteenth-Century Literature Criticism Ref PN 761 .N5 This multivolume set includes
criticism of the works written by authors who died between 1801 and 1900. Researchers
should use the most recent Title Index to locate criticism. Within the collection of essays
pertaining to a specific author within a volume, the oldest are provided first, the others
are given in chronological order.
Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism Ref PN 771 .G27 This multivolume set includes
criticism of the works written by authors who died between 1901 and 1960. Researchers
should use the most recent Title Index to locate criticism. Within the collection of essays
pertaining to a specific author within a volume, the oldest are provided first, the others
are given in chronological order.

criticism of the works written by authors who were alive in 1961 or later. Researchers

latest supplements to locate criticism of specific works.
British Writers Ref PR 85 .B688 Researchers should use the cumulative index in the

Black American Writers Past and Present: A Biographical and Bibliographical Dictionary

LOCATING TEXTS OF SHORT STORIES

Short Story Index, 1900- Ref PN 3451 .C62 This locates the text of short stories within
collections, etc., by author’s name or the named work.

CRITICISM WITHIN MONOGRAPHS

Criticism within separate works may be located by going to the Library OPAC
(Online Public Access System) and choosing, “Subject Browse.” Researchers should
then enter the author’s name, last name first, and scan down the list of subject
subheadings for “Criticism and Interpretation” to locate all works containing criticism.
They should then go to the indexes of those works and look under the name of the
desired work.
