EOT Crane.

Class Notes for 601 Combined Workshop EME.

EOT Crane. Electric Overhead Traveling Crane.

End Carriages: This supports the Girder and rolls on crane runway with the help of 2 LT
Motors. For safely this end carriage maintain 2 sets of Strikers, high to low end stop. On tope
of this end carriage has end shock absorbers at four ends; and in case electric stop fails, the
Crane system will be stopped by banging on the LT stoppers before hitting the body walls.

Girders. This is a box-type steel body or I-beam which is the main bridge between the end
carriages. This is also the moving platform for the Crab which houses the hoisting motor. The
carne can be of Single Girder or double girders. When the SWL is small, say about 5 MT, the
span is small, headroom is low lifting height is large; a combination can be worked out to
select single girder crane. In case of Single girder crane, the hoist is hanging; but in case of
double girder the crab rides over the girders

Crane Runway: This is basically two parallel square rails run over the runway beam along
the length of the shop along which the moving components of the cranes travels. There is a
set of two end carriages, which has 4 wheels to run on the rails. Joined to the end carriages
are two girders and on the girders crab rides. On top of these, the collector, control boxes,
walkway, railings also from part of the moving component.

Crab: Crab is basically the main machine which houses the hoisting motor. Crab has a
frame; the frame has four wheels which ride on the square rail fitted on top of girder. The
crab has a control box for operator of CT & Hoisting motors.

Safe Working Load (SWL): This is the load which can safely be lifted / worked by this
hoist. It is suggested that no load exceeding this should be applied on this crane.

LT Motors: There are 2 LT motors located at two ends of one Girder connected in parallel in
such a way that they match in all in working conditions. These motors are employed for long
travel of the crane.

CT Motors: There are 2 CT Motors placed on one side of Crab Frame connected in parallel
in such a way that they match in all in working conditions. They are used for Cross travel of
the Crane i.e. irrespective of movement of girders on Crane Way. These motors move the
Crab on the Girders.

Hoisting Motor: This is the heart of whole Crane; and is suitably fixed on the Crab. This
gains lateral movements through CT and LT and provide vertical movement to the job. This
is a geared motor connected to wire rope drum. Limits of its vertical motion are achieved
through inverter and load limiter.

Drum, Wire Rope: Job is lifted or lowered by steel wire rope, one end of which is fixed on
the drum. Drum is connected and thus rotated by hoisting geared motor.

Hook Block: This is one piece cast block of steel. This hold the loop of lifting weight and has
a catch the arrest outward slide of the loop attached for load/ job. Hook is kept hanging
through the fall of wire rope in such a way that it never falls free on the floor.
Pendant: This is the main instrument, stays hanging and operator commands all control /
movement of the crane through push-buttons actuation of this pendant. Buttons are marked
for respective operation and its mode. The operator must be highly conversant and friendly
with the pedant for smooth desired operation. A weighing screen is also there in the pendant
which measures the weight of the job lifted by its hook

Blinker and horn: These are attached to crab and activated once the crane is moving along
LT or CT with load. This is a warning for the workers on the floor that the crane is working
so that other can be careful to avoid collision.

Spider: There are rotary switches which change the terminals of motor winding; and thus the
speed. These spiders are used to change motion from high speed to low speed to stop and vice
versa. These are engaged one each for each direction of motion i.e. 2 for CT and 2 for LT.
These are activated on bearing rotated by strikers.

Strikers: These are straight bars placed to obstruct spiders along the way and allow strikers
to move up and down only on being rotated by a right angle (90 o) each time. Two strikers are
placed for 2 right angle rotations of spider (high-low-stop & vice versa). 4 strikers are used
for each of CT & LT; 2 strikers for each direction of motion.

Limits: Limits are mechanical and electrical arrangement to control speed and extent of
travel of body is question. Limits of LT and CT are achieved by combination of spider/striker
and end stops. Limits of vertical motion i.e. hoist are controlled by electronically by inverter.

Adjustment of Limits: All limits of CT, LT and Hoisting should be operated by authorized
experts.

Enclosed Conductor System: This is the main power supply arrangement through enclosed
system so that no accident take place due exposure of life power line. The system is 3-Ph and
1-Neutral, as per voltage standard of the land which is Ph-Ph 415 VAC. There are 4 flat
cupper conductors concealed in the system, 3 for 3 phases and 1 for neutral. Power is
supplied from one end; and thus called end feed. There is a collector, which rides through the
arrangement within the system to move down the Crane runway. There are four carbon
brushes which slide on the flat conductors and thus system in provided power.

Collector is fixed with the girder and as such it move along the crane runway along with the
girder. There are 4 (four) carbon conductors which slide on the flat tape cropper conductors
when the collector move forward / backward. The collector provides power to the control box
of the crane which is placed on the Girder/ walkway.
