Greater than Money
Tears will fall once the pain reaches your heart. But a smile will form once relief swamps you…
I’m sorry if this may suck to you. But I enjoyed writing this. But, oh well… I hope you enjoy. Love lots. Xoxo.
“The scariest thing was … we didn’t even have to be together for you to break my heart.” Skyler looked away. Her hand wiping away the tears forming in her eyes. She was shaking… almost close for a breakdown. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t cry in front of him. In front of Eric. “Skye, I… I didn’t mean to—” he started to reason. “And now you’re saying you didn’t mean to what? To kiss that girl in there? Or to buy me? To have a bet with my Dad and…” Sob. Sob. Sob. Eric had the urge to just hug her, comfort her and take back what he did. He slowly reached out to her. “Don’t.” The words were spoken rather strongly. A knife, slowly slicing his heart into pieces. A melody mixed with heat meant to shatter even the coldest heart of all. And it did. It tore him up inside. Crushed him. Broke him. Until he was nothing but a guilty, heartless monster.
She almost fell to the ground but luckily he caught her. She was relentlessly crying. It found a way to his heart. The sound of her cry… made him hate himself even more. And his heart of stone was now a heart of emotions. He was swelling with hate for himself, love for her, hate for his
gambling hobby, love for her, hate for his way of life, love for her, hate for that stupid bet he made with her father, love for her… And when he thought he was deliberately being torn in two. She spoke. “You do know that you look like a killer right?” Skyler said between her cries with a hint of laughter. Eric was shocked, what did he do to deserve such a girl… with a heart so soft?
Chapter one: Messed up much?!
“Skyler!!” Her dad called her. But when no response was heard he yelled again “Skyler Jayne! Get yourself down here this instant.” “Yes dad, coming…” She hurriedly took the stairs two at a time. And by the time she was at the last step, she froze. Skye’s gaze rested on his father’s hands signing some papers. Uh-oh, that’s a bad sign. She thought to herself. Added by a mental sigh. “Skye, darling… would you mind sitting here for a minute.” Her dad pointed on a chair by the dining table. She instantly obeyed. From her peripheral vision, she could see her mom sniffing back a cry. Why? What are the tears for? Her mom was the one who said that tears will fall once the pain reaches your heart. What was causing her mom pain? “Mom, what’s wrong?” Skyler asked, reaching a hand out to touch her mother’s hand and offer assurance. “She’s fine. She’ll get over it.” Her dad paused looking at his wife. “Right, honey?” he, then, continued. A moment of silence reigned. But her moms’ sniffing remained and slowly got worse. And it was
deliberately, inch by inch wrenching her gut, crushing her heart to pieces. Her mom was like a strong-willed model to her. She never cried in front of anyone, never showed her weaknesses. Even on her mom’s teen years, she was definitely the witted, the respected, the loved, the cared… even feared for. But what could possibly be about to happen that’s making her cry? Or dry sob? “Listen… you will transfer to a new house to make you more independent—” her dad said with authority and regret, anger, and sorrow… but what for? “Independent? What the hell are you talking about?” Skye couldn’t believe she talked to her dad like that. Never had she talked like that.. maybe thought about it. “Dad, just spit it out! What did you do!?” her anger was setting on a higher level. Every single time she glanced at her mother (who was crying now) her anger just gets fever-pitched. Skye felt her blood boiling… literally. “Well, I… ” her father started to say, then backed up in his chair… showing complete defeat. And letting his emotions swamp him. “I was in a casino, having fun with my co-workers. We got all drunk. Sweetie, please understand. Then, a guy came, a complete ass and a young multi-billionaire. We played poker… but I never really realized that I lost all my money. And that he made me bet… someone so valuable to me.” Tears were swarming in his eyes. “You.” “How could you? Mom… Dad…” she stuttered, holding back tears. “What now?” Skye tried to be calm but deep inside a turbulent storm was brewing. * * *
“Bye dad, bye mom.” She hugged them both. “Sweetie, I’m sorry… I really am.” her dad tried to say but she quickly hushed him. “It’s okay dad, it was a mistake. I’m sure this
guy, whoever he is, wouldn’t stand me and bring me back to both of you.” She tried to smile but she couldn’t… she can’t. Her mom hugged her then whispered “Don’t worry, I’ll punish your dad. I won’t make him touch me. Ha-ha.” Her mom giggled. “C’mon, smile for me. Please smile sweetie.” Her mom coaxed her. And she did, she smiled and silently said to herself Whoever you are, you just made a terrible mistake and be ready to face the most horrifying time of your life. Skyler entered the limousine and quickly saw… the most gorgeous guy she has ever seen. He was so handsome it almost hurt to look at him. Blue eyes. Ebony, wavy hair. Well-built and brawny. Perfect! “Oh.” Eric Miller was just as surprised as she was. He thought, he was going to see some slutty woman or a geek but not someone… who’s gloriously perfect. Where had that thought come from? He mentally scolded himself.
Chapter Two: Mutual!?
As Eric Miller sat across Skyler. He was incredibly shocked. Well, first because… she has this long hair, wavy in its own way; has an eye that could make someone melt in them, brown, chocolate…. Mesmerizing; has the most perfect, tiny nose, as if carved for a statue and the lips… It isn’t even 12 in the afternoon and he was starting feel hot. “Isn’t it hot in here?...” he paused as if waiting for her to speak her name. “And you are?” “Skyler Jayne, and you?” she yawned as if to show she was bored with him. But the truth was… damn her
hormones! Isn’t it hot in here? Oh yeah! It sure is, with you staring at me like that… whew! Well, she was really feeling awkward here. His stares was getting to her, his eyes held something she couldn’t point her finger at. Bewilderment, astonishment… and lust? “Skyler… great name. Sounds… oh I don’t know, erotic? Ha-ha” he laughed continuously. Music to her ears. Damn the man. “And.. ugh, I’m Eric Miller. Oh, I own you by the way.” He grinned. A very beautiful grin. Skyler just sighed. She already knew that. And in fact, she really did this for her family… rather than for them to bugged by this arrogant, young, rich man. She doesn’t even know what to say to him. Like he robbed out the words in her. . . Time passed by restlessly. And she found sleep creeping in. So she did. Her dream was weird. *** She was standing on a terrace of a really large house. Looking down at the houses and lights below. The night was slowly creeping in, but in a fast-forwarded way. As in, two seconds she could see that it was twilight then poof! It was night time. The zephyr blew her way, her waist length hair waving as it did. Leisurely, hands grabbed her waist.. and if truth be told she felt security there, recognition… and love. Skyler deliberately looked behind her, and saw… Eric!! *** Skyler woke up to be held by a pair of strong arms grasping both sides of her face. She instantly felt heat surround her body. “Are you alright? Are you truly awake now?” Eric said the words with genuine concern. “Yeah, I’m awake. And I’m good. Why?” she answered in one breath. “Do you know that I thought you passed out? Because for a moment there, you weren’t… I don’t know? moving anymore? I thought about waking you earlier, on our way to my house because it seemed like you were having a nightmare. But you said my name twice.” The true Eric was back. Funny,
cause she really preferred the concerned Eric. A nightmare? Yeah, coz you were in it. She thought with a smile. “Really? ooops, sorry ‘bout that.” She yawned again but knew that sleep wasn’t going to take over any minute or even later. “C’mon, I’ll show you your room.” They walked through the halls of his house, hand-in-hand. “You’re the only one who lives here?” Skyler asked in a mannered way. “Yeah, my mom and dad… died way back when God knows when. And as for my sister, now that’s a really an intricate topic to talk about. Sorry.” Why was he being a totally-honest-good-guy with her? And he’s telling the truth! For God’s sake, he never does that. “Sorry ‘bout your… uhm, parents. Well, about your sister maybe someday you could tell me that.” Silence followed. And by the time they were in front of the door. Eric opened it and…
Chapter Three: What is this? Oh no!
“This is your room, just next to mine.” He said with a speculating look on his face. He was waiting for her reaction. She hugged him… Huh? “Wow, this is awesome!” she giggled. And it was music to his ears. “I mean, it’s big and has a shelf of books. Damn!” she entered the room tugging his hand with her. “This is mine?” she excitedly asked. “Yeah, can I go now. And, oh,
you have your own bathroom. I’m gonna go now. They’ll call us when dinner’s ready.” Skyler took it as an opportunity to bathe. When Eric left she hurriedly looked at the bathroom. It was so big, people could party inside it. Could she really live like this? Would she live like this? Should she live like this? All questions rushed in at once. What about her plan? Was she still on it? Making his life a living hell… but she wasn’t a God to simply bend his life like that. And.. she was already falling. Where had that thought come from? What is this? Oh no! Life wouldn’t be unbelievable like this, would it? She believed in fairytales, wherein the prince and princess would fall in love with each other and blah blah blah… going to live happily ever after in a castle. But her story was different… it was like life draw them together. Like every happy ending was bended in a different way. Like all fairytales was deleted… and this was the only one existing. The beginning, the start… the origin. Eric entered his room with fierce confusion. He unfolded his life to a complete stranger. He blurted it out without even knowing who she was. Well… on the contrary, he knew her. She’s Skyler Jayne… who looked completely harmless and serene in her sleep. When she fell asleep. He quickly ended their distance and sat next to her inside the limousine. Held her head between his shoulders and his neck. And when his skin touched hers… damn the sparks! What is this? Oh no! His life was going to be a living hell. Whenever he was near her… heat coursed through his blood. He removed his tie and planned to cancel all his meetings throughout the week. He wanted to spend his week with her. To know her more. To… bond with her more. Knock. Knock. Knock. Three knocks disturbed his train of thought. “Who is it?” he loudly said. He was inside the bathroom and he could hear his echo. “Can I come in?” a
familiar female voice said. He swiftly recognized the voice. He could recognize it anywhere. “Yeah. Sure.” As he got out the bathroom Eric could clearly see that Skyler was freshly bathed and dressed in an evening dress. Not the formal one but just exactly the right one. “Like what you see?” she twirled around. Wow, a girl like me. He mentally thought. “Yeah, you have a fine…” he couldn’t say the word ass aloud, he didn’t know why but he could do that to any girl… but Skye was different. “You have a fine body. No, it ain’t fine… it’s amazing.” Skyler could feel his gaze wander through her body. “Why, thank you.” She bowed in courtesy. And the dress she wore showed every curve she has. It’s blue and white colors was designed in a way Eric found… so damn sexy. “Hey, by the way… to stop your reverie. They said that dinner is ready.” She said walking her way to his door, when a hand gently grabbed her by the waist. So she was trapped between the wall and Eric. “Do you know what I meant when I said I own you?” “Uhm… no.” “Well, it goes like this.” Then he kissed her. Drugging, sweet, long… addicting. And before Skyler knew it, she was kissing him back. It took every inch of control in her to find the strength to pull back. Once she did, her breathing came out raggedly. Panting heavily, she said “What the hell? And for your information… you do not own me.” She said in his face but still panting. So, it looked erotic. “Don’t worry… someday I will.” He grinned.
Chapter four: Misunderstanding
Seconds turned into minutes; minutes changed into hours; hours altered into days then days converted into weeks… until weeks transformed into months. Eric and Skyler didn’t even realize that they have built a steelstrong relationship. Without even knowing that they have a pseudo relationship, more than friends but less than lovers… or so they thought. Skyler would sometimes spend her weekends with parents. After having a mindconsuming fight with Eric, who knew from the start that he was defeated. He agreed that she could sleep over with her parents every weekend. But they made a hell of a deal, she should never ever try to escape him or he would never make her see her parents… And when she leaves him, he said that he will and can always find her. . . “So let me get this straight. This weekend while I’m with my parents you’ll be out with your friends?” she asked, hands on her hips like a mom. “Yup.” He packed his clothes in his backpack. “Why? Afraid you’ll miss me? Or I might leave you? Don’t worry I won’t.” he crossed their distance and swiftly hugged her. Breathing her scent in his lungs. “I’ll miss you.” “Whatever. Thank you and be safe.” And with that she left. * * *
Eric was out with his friends on a Sunday evening. Drinking at a bar called Sky Lover. “Is it true that you have a chic at your house? Living with you?” his friend, Sam asked.
“Well… yeah.” He felt anger rise in him because of the tone Sam used… it held interest. “baby, I thought I’m the only chic you have?” And with that Ginger kissed him. He didn’t kiss her back because this wasn’t the lips he got used to. Skye’s lips was sweet, voluptuous… addicting. And that was when it hit him. Skyler’s fragrance scattered in the air. He swiftly yet gently pushed Ginger away from him and ran outside as fast as he could hoping he would still find her. His girl. His life. His everything. “Skye! Look at me. Please stop!” “Skyler don’t run away from me.” “Skyler please…” Eric shouted, his voice ringing through the quietness and peacefulness of the night. As he ran, the breeze of the wind enveloped him and it was like he was following her by scent. His eyes was closed before he knew it. And… his life flashed before his eyes… Skyler Jayne. Her scent. Her lips. The way she fit in his body whenever they hugged. The way her fingers fill in perfectly the gaps in his hands. Skyler stopped dead in her tracks, looking back and seeing Eric stop just behind her. Sob. Sob. Eric had the urge to just hug her,
comfort her and take back what he did.
He was swelling with hate for himself, love for her, hate for his gambling hobby, love for her, hate for his way of life, love for her, hate for that stupid bet he made with her father, love for her… And when he thought he was deliberately being torn in two. She spoke. “You do know that you look like a killer right?” Skyler said between her cries with a hint of laughter. Eric was shocked, what did he do to deserve such a girl… with a heart so soft? “Listen, we could talk all about these in our house.” The way he said our house struck to her heart. The drive on the way to his house was silent. But they held hands and Eric was making circling paths on her wrists that made heat wander all around her body. They walked the stairs, not talking. And as they made it to his room, he slowly opened the door, urged her to come in and… once he closed the door he hugged her tight and planted kisses on her face while the final kiss lingered on her lips… “I’m sorry.” Then he kissed her rather than forcefully as she thought he would, it wasn’t it was like a kiss of sorry. “You can’t just kiss away what you did. Maybe later.” She giggled and pushed him off her. Eric made her
sit on his bed but when she glanced at him thinking that lust just took over, his eyes held guilt and regret. “I’m gonna start from the very start. Okay?” All Skyler could do was just nod. “When I was 17, about your age right now… my dad and mom was attending a very important meeting… I was in school, a college student and being the student as I am. Of course when you’re rich, you can’t help but mess around people. I was doing that when my assistant called, telling me my dad and mom was dead because of a plane crash. I asked her why, because of one screw! Can you believe it? They just forgot to place a screw on the left wing of the plane and what do you know… we own that plane. Well, as for now I own the company. The plane we build and sell are for private people only. The rich ones. The ones who want to have their own private plane to wander around the world.” He paused, breathing a sigh. “I… I hurriedly went home, not caring if my professor or even the principal was trying to stop me and tell them what was going on. I went to the hospital they were in. It was a long drive there. And when I reached the hospital, I couldn’t make myself enter the room they were lying in, covered in a white blanket. ‘Are they your parents’ sir?’ a nurse asked me. While removing the white cloth that covered their bodies, and once I saw their faces… all covered in blood…” Eric paused again. Images of his parent’s dead body covered in blood flashed before his eyes. He was there again, looking at them. Tears blurring his sight. Skyler, right then, knew that he crossed through time and space. That he was back there again. Back at the accident. All she could do was comfort him by laying his head on her legs as if it were a pillow. She kissed his forehead whispering “it’s okay, I’m here.”
Eric came back to reality. Hearing Skye say ‘It’s okay, I’m here’ it was amazing how her words made him melt right then and there. And her kiss was quite comforting. He stared at her. Mesmerized by her beauty, either in or out. “That was what happened, since then, I was the one who managed the company. My sister…” “If you don’t want to talk about her, it’s alright. I won’t force you.” Skyler played with his hair. All tousled and wavy. Perfect. “No, I have to. My sister is older than me, five years older to be exact. She’s 25 now. And she preferred to live normally. She said that the ones who lived all rich and cold… are insensitive people. The instant she said that, I realized I had to share or help others and not just enjoy all this money to myself. So… I gave money to charities. Helped the ones who needed help. My sister’s name is Julia, she’s awesome. The day our parents died. She stood before me with care and strength. She was strong enough that she could comfort me… despite the fact that every night she left me in my room to sleep in her room, I hear her crying. She placed my feelings before hers. I admire her for that. We had an epic fight. She wanted to live normally as I said earlier, what she meant was… she didn’t want anything of the money that belonged to hers. She gave it all to me. And was immediately gone. She wasn’t alone, she’s with his husband, Terry. But I never left her, I had some of my men follow them, and report how their life is.” He encircled her waist with his arms, hugging her. “Then… about the bet. I was drunk, and pissed because my sister left the country. She went to England… and left me with just a letter. Saying sorry, and for me to stop following them with my men. So I did what she said. Your father and his co-workers was
drunk. He had no money left so I asked him, if he had a daughter, he said yes… and I won.” He grinned devil-like. “And now, I have you here. What are we anyway?” he turned all serious. “I honestly don’t know. We kiss, we hug, we hold hands but we have no commitment. I… lo—” her words were interrupted with his kiss. “Stop kissing me.” She giggled coz her words were muffled. When they stopped kissing Eric began to speak again. “Will you… stay with me? Until you feel like throwing me away?” they stared at each other for a few minutes. “I’ll even marry you.” Skyler laughed.
Love, ♥, Love
Seven years had already passed… “So Skye… do you know what today is?” Eric asked as they were sitting under a tree watching the waves of the water. “Nope. I don’t have a clue, why? What’s with today?” Skyler answered, facing him so their lips were just inches apart. “Today was the very day I met you, the day I owned you, the day I laid my eyes on the most beautiful girl, the day I fell in love… the day you’re going to be called Skyler Miller.” He smiled and urged her to swim with him. They went to the beach and swam until Eric stopped Skye, made her go under and they kissed there. Skyler didn’t know that while Eric was kissing her, his hands were searching beneath the sea bed, the sand at their feet… then
suddenly, he broke the kiss, placed a ring at her ring finger. They both broke through the water surface in synchronization. “Will you marry me?” Eric asked smiling the most amazing and ineffably gorgeous smile that always made Skyler weak. She answered him with a definite yes. Then a hug. Then came the kiss… they both knew they’ll never grow tired of.
