What Makes a Building Green?

A green building, also known as a sustainable building, is a structure that is designed, built, renovated,
operated, or reused in an ecological and resource-efficient manner. Green buildings are designed to meet
certain objectives such as protecting occupant health; improving employee productivity; using energy,
water, and other resources more efficiently; and reducing the overall impact to the environment.

The Field
Architectural engineers apply engineering principles to the
construction, planning, and design of buildings and other
structures. They often work with other engineers and with
architects, who focus on function layout or aesthetics of
building projects. Architectural Engineering often
encompasses elements of other engineering disciplines,
including mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and others.
The architectural engineers are responsible for the different
systems within a building, structure, or complex.
Architectural engineers focus several areas, including:
the structural integrity of buildings
the design and analysis of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems,
efficiency and design of plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems,
acoustic and lighting planning, and
energy conservation issues.

Architectural/Construction Engineering Technology, AAS Degree

Architectural/Construction Technicians usually work under the immediate supervision of a
registered architect, professional engineer, or construction manager. They perform
operational tasks of a technical nature following well-designed methods and procedures set
down by their construction supervisors or by architectural standards. Tasks often include
producing construction documents from architectural sketches, computations, written and
computer-assisted drawings of results, and field inspection of work according to plans.
The program is currently teaching Green building practices such as geothermal heating
schooling, active and passive solar technology, envelope home construction and sustainable
Architecture.
This program is taught by a Registered Architect who is pursuing LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) Certification.

Architectural technicians are also known as architectural draftspersons. They fulfill an important
role in the coordination and documentation of a building project, and they work in an
architectural office alongside architects and project managers. Although they are not directly
involved with the design aspects of a project, architectural technicians work to ensure a project
is comprehensively documented for construction.

AutoCAD Technician Career Overview

Drafters, or AutoCAD technicians, prepare the technical drawings and plans that are used in
many different industrial settings. There are some high schools that offer vocational training
in drafting, or you may choose to obtain your training from a postsecondary institution,
such as a vocational or community college.
Recommended Schools for Engineering:
• Westwood College
• » Associate Degree - CAD - Architectural Drafting
• ITT Technical Institute
• » Associate of Science in Computer Drafting and Design
• Penn Foster Career School
• » Career Diploma - Drafting with AutoCAD
• Ferris State University
• Rochester Institute of Technology
Duties and Responsibilities of an Auto CAD Technician
An auto CAD technician is also referred to by the term drafter. These professionals prepare
technical drawings and plans used in manufacturing, construction, and pipeline industries.
Auto CAD technicians create detailed visuals that give information about dimensions and
materials. These visuals are created by computer software known as CAD, or computer
aided design. Usually, an auto CAD technician will choose an industry in which to specialize.
These various areas of specialization will require very different types of daily work
responsibilities; which is why the following sample job postings from monster.com vary in
specifics:
• 'To work with Engineers and Project Managers to develop high quality construction
documents using Auto CAD 2008 for use in submittals, manufacture and installation.'-
Environmental Interiors, Inc.
• 'The work includes 3-D implementation of HVAC systems with general construction and
other trades in both new and existing structures

Architectural /Construction Engineering Technology

ARCHITECTURAL/CONSTRUCTION DRAFTING
For anyone interested in construction, building materials, green construction and want to

work on this from the design and planning onto the job site a career in Architectural /

Construction Engineering might be the right job for you.

The course description of this course for Southeast Technical Institute is as follows;

Architectural/Construction Technicians usually work under the immediate

supervision of a registered architect, professional engineer, or
construction manager. They perform operational tasks of a technical
nature following well-designed methods and procedures set down by their
construction supervisors or by architectural standards. Tasks often include
producing construction documents from architectural sketches,
computations, written and computer-assisted drawings of results, and
field inspection of work according to plans.

Architectural Drafting
Today’s Drafters need both knowledge of traditional techniques and also CADD (Computer

Assisted Design and Drafting). While CADD has become the standard method of drafting a

strong understanding of the traditional methods are necessary for the CADD drafter or operator

is still necessary.

CADD operators can make, alter create and store plans at a speed that traditional drafting

cannot begin to come close to. Drafting by hand is a slow and laborious exercise and changes to

plans often mean starting over. With CADD a change takes minutes not hours. With programs

available a CADD Drafter can create the plans for a building and also make a materials list, work

formulas for structural and other purposes and change them as needed. The abilities of CADD

programs are almost infinite, and with proper training in traditional and modern methods an

AutoCAD operator can be invaluable in an office or on the jobsite.

Employment Opportunities

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Architectural and Civil drafters held 47% of all

drafting jobs in 2008. The BOLS also states that Architectural and Civil drafters should see a

nine percent increase in employment opportunities for trained individuals, by far the fastest

growing of the drafting trades.

Training and Skills

Most employers are interested in applicants who have two years technical training in

drafting with emphasis on strong drafting skills, knowledge of mathematics and CADD training

according to the BOLS and most other websites. Also knowledge of materials and specialized

construction techniques are expected.

Earning Potential

As the attached chart will show Architectural Engineering pay is at the middle of the top

five paying specialties in the drafting category. When you take into account that it also is

projected to have the most opportunity for job growth in coming years this seems to be a fine

choice for a motivated individual.

In Conclusion

Earning an AAS Degree in Architectural/Construction Engineering Technology is an

exciting step to a career that could have you working out problems in a building’s design to

making it more energy efficient to solving problems encountered as a construction project is

being done. One day you could be at a computer producing documents from an Architects

sketch, the next you could be in the field inspecting a project for compliance with the plans. You

could be working out the materials needed for a project or find ways to make a structure stronger

Neal Bixler

or greener. With the proper training and motivation someone with these skills can have a large

impact
