The Year the Seeds Blossomed: The JOM Interview with

2013 TMS President Elizabeth Holm

JOM: In your speech as incoming

President at TMS2013, you stated that
providing enhanced support to young
professionals and developing more
diversity within the TMS membership
were the priorities for your presidency.
Looking back on the year, what
progress has been made on those goals?
Holm: These two goals are very much
linked in my mind, because the next
generation of engineers and scientists, out
of necessity, is going to have to be more
diverse. The workforce is becoming much
more international, while ongoing societal
shifts mean that many more women, in
particular, will expect to be part of the
professional community. I am delighted
and thrilled at the progress that TMS has
made on recognizing both of these factors.

in the Minerals, Metals, and Materials
Professions (DMMM1) has gathered in
a very short period of time. Its clear to
me that there was a back pressure for
programs focused on improving diversity
in the minerals, metals, and materials
professions, and we seem to have
found the outlet with the Summit. It is
shaping up to include some very exciting
workshops, panel discussions, and skill
and mid-career professionals, as well as
leaders in government, academia, and
industry. The support and enthusiasm for
this effort has been beyond my dreams.
There is still a great deal that can
be done, but I believe we have built a
very strong base, particularly since the
revitalized TMS Foundation is focusing
on initiatives that expand on its historic
commitment to the needs of early career
professionals. One particular area that
needs some work is international diversity.
As TMSs membership grows globally,
it is very important that we develop
programs that support the needs of those
members, whether they are traveling
overseas to our meetings or trying to
connect with their colleagues outside of
those venues.
JOM: You mentioned the TMS
Foundation revitalization, which has
year. How will this impact TMS and the
professional communities it serves?
Holm: The TMS Foundation plays an
important role in serving those in our
professional community who are not
yet part of our sustaining membership,

professions has evolved as well, and TMS
has done an excellent job in addressing
these new technical areas. A particularly
compelling example has been its efforts
in integrated computational materials
engineering (ICME). This past year,
TMS released Implementing ICME in the
Aerospace, Automotive, and Maritime
Industriesa truly groundbreaking study
that bridges the gap between theoretical
discussion and real-world application of
ICME. This accomplishment is the latest
in a comprehensive portfolio of resources
that TMS has been developing for this
emerging discipline, including the very
successful ICME Congress series and the
Integrating Materials and Manufacturing
Innovation journal. It points to TMSs
strength to adapt to a myriad of global
changes and effectively serve new
technical areas and groups of members.
We just have to keep doing more of that
in the future, since the profession is only
going to expand.
One thing that we cant change,
though, are the opportunities that TMS
offers for our profession to convene, like
our annual and specialty meetings. Weve
discovered that our members greatly
value meeting and learning from each
other in person, and those experiences
really cant be substituted in other forms.

JOM: How do you envision staying

involved with TMS once your
Presidential Cycle ends?
Holm: My experience as TMS President
has reinforced to me how critical
professional societies are in advancing
many illustrations of this that Ive been
excited about the TMS Foundations
to bring my experience and contacts
to bear on that effort. I hope that other
senior TMS members who have a long

with the Foundation. I believe that is
where we can use our collective talents
and knowledge base to great effect.
JOM: In the future, how do you
hope TMS members will view your

TMS Bylaws Update

On May 2, 2013, the TMS Board of Directors approved specic bylaws modications to
present to the membership for approval. The recommended changes included providing
exibility in Board size, a passage requiring that the notice of the annual Board business
meeting be publicized on the society web site rather than in two newspapers, and some
minor typographical corrections.
Based on majority membership vote, the Board validated the membership vote on the
typographical corrections, as well as the following change to the Boards composition:
Previous Language
The Board of Directors shall consist of 15 directors with responsibilities as described
in the Administrative and Policy.
Existing Language
The Board of Directors shall consist of 13 to 15 directors with responsibilities as
described in the Administrative and Policy Manual.
Due to a discrepancy in presenting the topic of publicizing the annual Board business
meeting, the Board declared this aspect of the vote invalid and will revisit updating that
language at a future time. The bylaws changes that have been adopted will go into effect
with the seating of the 2014 Board of Directors at TMS2014. The TMS Board thanks those
members who took the time to register their vote on these changes.
