Mechanisms
Our modern world contains an abundance of mechanisms. A large proportion of all manmade
artefacts contain mechanisms - in fact, there are so many of them around us that we tend to
take them for granted.
A mechanical system uses mechanisms to change one type of motion into another. One type
of motion goes into the mechanism and another comes out.
There are four types of motion:

Linear - ........................................................
Circular - ...............................................

Oscillating - .........................................................
..............................................................................
Reciprocating - ........................................
...................................................................

What do all mechanisms have in common?....................................................................................

Mechanical Movement
A machine (mechanical system) converts one type of _ _ _ _ _ _ into _ _ _ _ _ _ _

PROCESS

INPUT
Force and movement

Mechanism, to convert
or transmit energy to
cause a...

OUTPUT
Force and movement
to satisfy a need

Can you identify the input and output motion for the following machines? The first one
is done for you. You may need to look back at the previous page for help with the
different types of motion.

Hand drill
Input motion:
Rotary motion to handle

Output motion:
Rotary motion of chuck and
twist drill. Direction and
speed of rotation changed

Glue stick
Input motion:

Output motion:

Car windscreen wipers

Output motion:
Input motion:

Spiral ratchet screwdriver

Output motion:

Cams
Cams are mechanisms which may be used to change one type of motion into another. Cams are
used to turn rotary motion into reciprocating motion It is because of this, they are usually
found in simple mechanical toys.

The drawing on the left shows how a cam works.

A cam follower rests on the edge of the cam,
and as the cam rotates on a shaft, the follower
is made to move up and down.

There are many different shapes of cams. The three most common cams will be
drawn in the boxes below, along with a description of their motion

Mechanical Toy
Design Brief
Small children enjoy playing with toys that make interesting or unusual movements.
Use your knowledge of mechanisms to design and make a wooden mechanical toy
(automata), that uses a rotary motion input to create interesting output movements.
The automata could be based on an animal or other figure that would appeal to young
children.

Research
Use this page to record you research. Remember to keep all research relevant. To achieve
level 5 or above you must use a range of sources and evaluate your research.

Design Specification
Once you have carried out all your research, you should be aware of all the possibilities
relating to the design and manufacture of your toy. On this page, you will need to create
a design specification. A design specification is a list of things your product must have,
must be, etc.
1. ........................................................................................................................................
2. .........................................................................................................................................
3. ........................................................................................................................................
4. .........................................................................................................................................
5. ........................................................................................................................................

Design Ideas
Having carried out you research and design specification, you should now have some ideas
for suitable themes for your toy. Use this page and the next to get your design ideas drawn out.
Remember to annotate your designs.

Design Ideas Continued

You should now have three design ideas. To achieve level 4, you need to make choices in
your designs. In the space below, comment about what you like and dislike about each design.

Design 1................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................
2. Are you pleased with the overall finish?.............................................................................

................................................................................................................................................
3. Did you change anything during the making?....................................................................
.................................................................................................................................................

4. What changes would you make if you had to make your product again?..........................
................................................................................................................................................
................................................................................................................................................
5. Does your product meet all the requirements of the design specification?.......................
...............................................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................................
6. Did you use your time effectively?.....................................................................................
