The Syrian Refugee Crisis

When we see pictures in the papers and scenes on


television of thousands of destitute men, women
and children trudging along a railway line or a dusty
road, our hearts melt and go out to them.
Their plight was encapsulated in the tragic picture
of a dead three-year-old boy named Aylan Kurdi
being carried along a beach by a police officer. His
five-year-old brother had also met a similar death.
Both had reportedly come from the northern Syrian
town of Kobani, the site of fierce fighting between
Islamic state insurgents and Kurdish forces earlier
this year.
It is said that Syrias civil war is the worst
humanitarian disaster of our time. This tragedy is
highlighted by the number of innocent civilians
suffering; by the more than 11 million people who
are displaced, thus far; and the increasingly dire
impact on neighbouring countries all of which can
seem too overwhelming to understand and take in.
Not only is the Syrian disaster hard to understand
but so is the complexity of all of the Middle East;
the different sects within Islam are fighting each
other; the so-called Islamic State (IS) has seized
large swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq. It has
become notorious for its brutality, including mass
killings, abductions and beheadings.
Then added to this we see divisions between secular
and Islamist fighters, and between ethnic groups,
who continue to complicate the politics of the
conflict.
Added to the mix is the US led coalition, including
Australia, which has as its goal the destruction of IS
using their military forces.
So what should we as Christians make of this very
sad and complex human tragedy?
The most obvious thing we must do is to bring the
whole situation before God in prayer. We need to
pray especially for Syrian Christians, for
ministries such as the Middle East Reformed
Fellowship (MERF), other missionary organisations
and Christian missionaries.

Then in order to pray intelligently we need to have


some idea of what is going on over there. You can
easily find out by Googling it.
We also need to pray for the other nations and our
own nation of Australia, who feel constrained to
take in more refugees from this war torn country.
At the time of writing our Federal government of
Australia has decided to increase its intake of Syrian
refugees. Some members of the coalition advocate
giving Christians higher priority than others because
they are the most vulnerable to attack by IS.
The Christian communities of Syria account for
about 12% of the population. But they are a mixed
bunch. These include Oriental Orthodox (Armenian
Orthodox and Syriac Orthodox) Eastern Orthodox
(such as Greeks or Russians), Roman Catholics,
various Eastern Catholic Churches that are under
the authority of the Pope, and Protestants. The
Syriac Tradition (or Eastern Rite) is represented by
the Assyrian Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic
and Ancient Church of the East, the members of the
Syriac tradition are all Eastern Aramaic speaking
ethnic Assyrians and Protestants.
So what are we to make of all this in the light of
scripture? In Matthew 23:3-8 the disciples of Jesus
asked Him when the end of the age would come and
what would be the signs. Jesus told them, You
will hear of wars and rumours of wars but see to it
that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen,
but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against
nation, kingdom against kingdomAll these are
the beginnings of birth pains. In other words Jesus
told His disciples that you can expect wars and
rumours of wars in the last times. That is the time
between His first coming and His second coming.
But dont be scared and lose your faith during that
time.
Well, it is easy enough for us who live in Australia
to not be afraid of wars going on around the world,
but it is not so easy for believers in countries like
Syria. May we pray for them, that they will not be
so alarmed that they abandon their faith in Jesus.

the Bible Part 1
Iain Hamish Murray is a British pastor and
author of many books. He was educated in
the Isle of Man at King Williams College and
at the University of Durham before entering
ministry in 1955.
Man is now thinking out a Bible for himself;
framing a religion in harmony with the
development of liberal thought; constructing a
worship on the principles of taste and culture;
shaping a god to suit the expanding aspirations
of the age. The extent of the mischief
no one can calculate. A soul without faith, a
church without faith, a nation without faith,
a world without faith what is to be their
future? What is their present? When faith goes,
all good things go. When unbelief comes in, all
evil things follow. Horatius Bonar.
The nineteenth century was an age which saw
great progress in many departments of
knowledge for which we should be
thankful. Instead, however, of attributing this
to the providence of God, there were those
who explained it in terms of the supposed
evolutionary progress of mankind. They
claimed that geology proved the Genesis
account of the beginning of the world to be
impossible. The authenticity of the Pentateuch
was denied. It was doubted whether man even
knew how to write in the time of Moses. When
Christians were first confronted with such
ideas they recognized them as the products of
unbelief. The Protestant churches all believed
the authority of the word of God. But by the
1880s a different response had arisen.
Prominent teachers came forward in the
churches who argued that there was no need to
defend every part of Scripture. Some
concessions could surely be made to modern
scholarship, and Christianity would be better
defended by holding only to what is essential
and fundamental. Here was a new movement,
setting out, it said, not to destroy faith but to

put it on a firmer basis, only leaving aside


the less important and incidental matters, and
concentrating on the preservation of what is
most vital. The teaching took the name, the
New Apologetic, an apologetic that is, not
for unbelief but for Christianity.
For a closer look at this development I want to
concentrate on Scotland, and particularly on
the Free Church of Scotland, the denomination
which became the power-house for ideas
which would reach all parts of the
English-speaking world.
The Free Church of Scotland was formed in
1843 by some 500 ministers who separated
from the Church of Scotland on account of the
states interference in the church. It was a
movement born out of a revival of
evangelical faith, and was marked by
prayerfulness, by outreach and missionary
zeal, both at home and abroad. Its leaders were
revered across the Protestant world. Some
spoke of the denomination as the most
apostolic church in the world. But go on forty
years, and it is from this church that the New
Apologetic entered the scene.
William Robertson Smith, pupil of A. B. Davidson and Julius Wellhausen
(who was to call him the cleverest man in
Britain), was the first in the Free Church to
make public a programme to put an
understanding of Scripture on a new basis.
From the start his career was extraordinary;
gifted in speech, knowledge, and languages,
he was already a phenomenon when, from
theological college, he moved straight to being
Professor of Hebrew at Aberdeen at the age
of 23.
But in the next seven years his published
writings raised an increasing concern. He so
disregarded admonitions to be more
circumspect that in 1881 he was removed from
his post. Robert Rainy, Principal of New
College, Edinburgh, who would increasingly

So a reduced view of Scripture was not to be
seen as loss, it was a spiritual gain. Thus R. W.
Dale sought to encourage preachers with the

attractive and able speakers, the new teaching
had mighty and persuasive influence. Those of
us who never felt the spell may wonder how
the large numbers it won included such
evangelicals as Alexander Whyte, and W. Y.
Fullerton (a biographer of Spurgeon), yet such
was the case. Whyte gave vigorous support to
Robertson Smith. When T. R. Glover was
made President of the Baptist Union in 1925,
Fullerton acclaimed him as a prophet whom
God has sent us. But Glover was the man who
said, Verbal inspiration is a monstrous belief.
Error can be made to look exceedingly
attractive, so attractive that we are already
deceived if we think we can preserve ourselves
from it. That good thing which was
committed unto thee keep by Holy Ghost
which dwelleth in us (2 Tim. 1:14).

They represented an evangelicalism beset by


narrowness, inaccuracy and the fear to
acknowledge some of the healthiest and
divinest movements of our time.

bringing a closer attachment to Christ.
Certainly, it was said, the Bible helps, as sign
posts help a traveller on the road, and it could
be praised as an exceptional, a divine book.
But it cannot be the last word because
Christians have something greater and better
than sign posts they have Christ as a
living guide! However much help may be
found in the Bible, faith rests on personal
experience of Christ, not in the text of a book.

COMMITTEE (CSC) OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
IN AMERICA (PCA) PART 2

Calendar-Day interpretation of Genesis 1-3.

The Day-Age Interpretation
1. What is the Day-Age interpretation?
The Day-Age interpretation of the creative days in
Genesis 1 has taken various forms in its
contemporary expressions, and those which have
been held within conservative Reformed circles
are outlined below and contain certain common
features. This view has been held by such
conservative Reformed theologians as those from
the Old Princeton Seminary tradition of the Hodges
and Warfield and more recently as expressed by
J. Oliver Buswell, Jr. and R. Laird Harris, both of
whom were on the original faculty of Covenant
Theological Seminary and taught there for many
years.
a. The six days are understood in the same sense as
in that day of Isaiah 11:10-11 that is, as periods
of indefinite length and not necessarily of 24 hours
duration. There are other similar uses of the
Hebrew word for day (ym) in Scripture to
support this view of periods longer than 24 hours
including that in the very context of Genesis 2:4.
Another argument for this approach is that the
seventh day in Genesis 1 is not concluded with the
boundary phrase, and there was evening, and there
was morning as with the other days, and therefore
it continues, as indicated by Hebrews 4:1-11s
quotation of Psalm 95:11.
b. The six days are taken as sequential, but as
overlapping and merging into one another, much as
an expression like the day of the Protestant
Reformation might have only a proximate meaning
and might overlap with the day of the
Renaissance. While exponents of this view might
be willing to concede a rough parallel between day

one and day four, day two and day five, day three
and day six, they would tend to deny that this is an
intended parallel by Moses as author, as is
commonly claimed in the Framework interpretation.
c. The Day-Age interpretation claims that the
narrative of Genesis 1 is from the point of view of
the earth as being prepared for the habitation of
man. In this context, the explanation of day four is
often that the sun only became visible on that day,
as atmospheric conditions allowed the previous
alternation of light and darkness to be perceived
from the earth to have its source from the position
of the previously created sun and other heavenly
bodies. However day four is understood, the point
is made that only on that day is the diurnal cycle of
days governed by the sun begun, so that it is
difficult to know the nature of the first three days.
2. What is the meaning of the Hebrew word
Ym?
The Hebrew word ym, day, is obviously used
in the Bible, like our English word day, to mean
a period of 24 hours, however, also like its English
counterpart, it may be used to distinguish from the
night and therefore represent a period less than 24
hours, such as in the cool of the day, and it is
capable of meaning a period of unspecified length,
as in the prophetic references to the day of the
Lord. In fact, in Genesis 2:4 the word ym is
used in the singular to describe all that transpired in
Gods creation as described as a period of six days
in Genesis 1. As linguist Dr. Robert B. Longacre
has communicated to the committee concerning the
range of meaning of ym:
As for the Hebrew words, ym in the immediate
vicinity of Gen 1 there occurs an obviously
figurative use of the term: And these are the
generations of the heavens and the earth in the day
when the Lord God made the heavens and the earth
(Gen 2:4). Here it is evident that all six days of
creationhowever conceivedare summarized as
the day when the Lord God made the heavens and
the earthwhere the NIV simply translates the
day as when.

3. Who has held a view


that allows for creative
days of unspecified
length?

Obviously, the events


described in II Kings 25
and Jeremiah 39 took place over a period of time;
and, in fact, the actual capture of the City may have
spread over a month because the City then and in
Roman times was cleft by the Tyropoeon valley.
The taking of the newer part of the City with the
wall built in Hezekiahs time evidently occurred
first. Then the Babylonian army, after catching its
breath, advanced to the rest of the city where the
temple mount and public buildings were located and
reduced that. Pillage, burning, and consolidation
of the conquest probably took even longer. The
Romans in their later reduction of the City attacked
first the older part and then the Western hill - in
opposite order from the Babylonians. But the
sacking and pillaging, as we have said above, is all
referred to as the day of Gods anger in
Lamentations (Lam 1:21) - even as those same
nations rejoiced saying This is the day we have
waited for (Lam 2:16).
It would be laboring the point to argue that the
eschatological day of the Lord likewise most
probably indicates a period of Gods judgement not
a single calendar day.
It is interesting to note that two of the five
Westminster Divines who are known to explicitly
support 24-hour days of creation acknowledge this
range of interpretation for ym. John White in his
commentary says about Genesis 2:4 in the day:
That is, in that Time that it pleased God to take
up in forming them, which we know was in Six
days, and not in One. But we find the Word, Day,
in Scripture is used commonly to signify Time
Indefinitely. John Ley in the 1645 Westminster
Annotations on Genesis 2:4 in the day: The day
is not here taken (as in the first Chapter and in the
beginning of this) for the seventh part of the week,
but with more latitude for time in general wherein a
thing is done, or to be done; as in verse 17 and
Luke 19:42, 2 Cor 6:2 and Ruth 4:5.

The Day-Age approach is


not merely of 19th-century
origin as a response to
Charles Darwin and evolutionary science. From
ancient times there was a recognition that the word
day could mean an extended period of time,
although there is no formal evidence of a Day-Age
view in orthodox Reformed circles before the time
of such figures as Hugh Miller and Robert Shaw in
the Free Church of Scotland. There may have been
other fragmentary antecedent views that treated the
creative days as longer periods, but not a thoroughly
formulated Day-Age system of interpretation.
The Jewish apocalyptic Book of Jubilees, written
most likely in the 2nd century B.C., says in
4:29-30: At the end of the nineteenth jubilee,
during the seventh week - in its sixth year - Adam
died. All his children buried him in the land where
he had been created. He was the first to be buried
in the ground. He lacked 70 years from 1000 years
because 1000 years are one day in the testimony of
heaven. For this reason it was written regarding the
tree of knowledge: On the day that you eat from
it you will die. Therefore he did not complete the
years of this day because he died during it.
Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354-430) discussed
creation in five or six different places, speculating
in various ways as to the meaning of the six days,
but advocating mainly a position of instantaneous
creation taking place in Genesis 1:1. In the City of
God he said, What kind of days these were it is
extremely difficult, or perhaps impossible for us to
conceive.
John Calvin used the expression in the space of six
days in his Commentary on Genesis 1:5, evidently
to distance himself from Augustines speculations
and position of instantaneous creation. In the
Institutes I. xiv.20, Calvin avoids recounting the
history of the creation of the universe, but refers
favourably to the works of Basil and Ambrose. Basil
in his Hexaemeron clearly regards the sun as being

created only on the Fourth Day. Likewise in


Ambroses Hexaemeron the sun did not exist until
the Fourth Day. Calvins Commentary on Genesis
1:14 indicates his belief that the stars, sun, and
moon were made only on the Fourth Day.
William Perkins (1558-1602), like Calvin, distanced
himself from a view of creation in one moment
and spoke of creation in six distinct days or six
distinct spaces of time, with the sun, moon, and
stars not created before the fourth day.
The Westminster Divines, deriving the language
of in the space of six days from Calvin, Perkins,
and the Irish Articles (1615) of Archbishop James
Ussher, left the duration of the days of creation
unspecified in the Confession and Catechisms,
perhaps out of awareness that the days before Day
Four were not normal solar days. Although some
members of the Westminster Assembly,
particularly the great biblical scholar John
Lightfoot, were explicit about 24-hour days, the
main concern seems to have been to differ from
instantaneous creation, a view held by such
contemporaries as Sir Thomas Browne and John
Milton.
Soon after the Westminster Divines, explicit
evidence for the Day-Age approach appears,
although among less than fully orthodox sources.
Thomas Burnet (1635-1715), a chaplain to King
William III until dismissed for some of his views on
Genesis, argued that the six days might represent
periods of undetermined length, in a work praised
by his friend Sir Isaac Newton. Burnets view
stemmed partly from his understanding that the sun
was created only on the fourth day. In 1698,
William Whiston, an English Baptist known to
modern readers for his edition of Josephus works,
regarded the days as years. The Dutch theologian
Hermann Venema (1697-1787) opposed the view
that Moses speaks not of ordinary days but of years
and of centuries, showing that such a view was
held by some in his circles in the 18th century.
In the 19th century, before Darwins 1859 Origin
of Species and in the midst of much discussion of
a geological basis for an old earth, Robert Shaw
described favourably the possibility of interpreting
the days of creation as ages. Professor Tayler Lewis
of the Reformed Church of America advocated long
ages in his The Six Days of Creation, as did Donald
MacDonald, a minister of the Free Church of
Scotland, in his Creation and the Fall: A Defence
and Exposition of the First Three Chapters of
Genesis. Of the Old Princeton theologians, Charles

Hodge, A. A. Hodge, and Benjamin Warfield


supported a Day-Age approach, as did also J.
Gresham Machen, O. T. Allis, and E. J. Young of
Westminster Seminary.
J. Oliver Buswell, Jr. also took this position. In the
Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod
and Covenant Seminary tradition, so also did R.
Laird Harris and Francis Schaeffer.
In his three-volume Commentary on Genesis, James
Montgomery Boice considers evolution, theistic
evolution, the gap theory, six-day creationism, and
progressive creationism in chapters 5 through 9 of
Volume 1 and concludes by favouring a Day-Age
view.
4. Is the Day-Age interpretation just a reaction to
Darwinism?
Much of the negative sentiment brought against the
Day-Age theory of creation within the reformed
church has been engendered by a strong reaction
against the teachings which grew out of Charles
Darwins seminal work on the Origin of Species.
In its so-called neo-Darwinian form, this teaching
holds that random mutations, which are continually
occurring within the population gene pool of any
species, can confer a survival advantage on
individuals within the species, and that gradually
over long periods of time, this increased
biological fitness leads to the emergence of new
species with more complex biological systems,
through an unguided process termed Darwinian
Evolution. Extension of this concept back in time
to an initial primordial elemental soup (which arose
some time after the Big Bang) that gave rise to the
first life, has substituted for the Biblical account
of creation in the proud minds of men. This view
has been so aggressively taught within our schools
and colleges that it is the predominant view of the
origins and diversity of life. Consequently, we in
the church today find ourselves in such a reactionary
stance against this incessant tide of unsubstantiated
indoctrination of our children, that we blame
Darwinian evolution as the evil that gave rise to
such interpretations of the Genesis account of
creation as the Day-Age theory. This is not so,
however, as we can clearly appreciate from the
discussion under question 3) above where we see
that a view open to the possibility of creative days
of unspecified length was held by prominent and
influential church fathers, some of whom lived long
before Charles Darwin. We must remember this in
our new examination of the theory and remain
clear-headed in our evaluation of how these early,

as well as contemporary, church fathers adopted the


view as their belief. We must also deal with
Darwinian evolution rationally and provide a cogent
case for its deception and the complete lack of
physical evidence to
substantiate it.
5. How do you deal with
the issue of death within
this view?
The specific point for
consideration here is
whether death within the
animal kingdom is linked
to the death of Adam.
Some hold the view that
prior to the fall and the
resultant curses by God,
the perfect state of the
world and everything in it left no place for death of
any kind.
The proponents of this view understand Romans
5:12 (Therefore, just as sin entered the world
through one man, and death through sin....) to be
speaking of all death, both that of man and all under
mans dominion, entering Gods perfect creation
through the one sin of Adam. It is clear that death
at least in the plant kingdom was to be a natural
process since God gave every green plant as food
to all that had the breath of life in it including man,
the beasts of the earth, the birds of the air and all the
creatures that move on the ground (Gen 1:29-30).
Others, including John Murray in his commentary,
understand Paul here to be speaking of the death of
man only. Such proponents see in the very contrast
made by Paul in Romans 5:12-21, of death through
Adam being subjugated by life through Christ, that
the righteousness and eternal life brought by Christ
to man alone indicates through its very antithesis
that death through Adam is to man alone.
Those who fall into this latter category suppose that
the carnivorous fish of the ocean, which were
created on the fifth day (a day before man and
therefore the earliest opportunity for the fall), ate
other fish and/or birds between their creation and
the fall, just as they do today. The alternatives are
that either they did not eat during this period or that
they ate only plant material before the fall (which
would require a completely different digestive
system and tooth structure, for example).
In addition, proponents of this view believe the
carnivorous animals, created on day six prior to

man, fed in the way they are expertly designed to


do on other animals, in the manner we observe them
doing today between their creation and the fall,
which (if, as some believe, the fall occurred on day
six) must have been at the
very least several hours in
duration to allow time for
Adam to work and take
care of the garden, name
the kinds, sleep while
God created Eve, interact
with the serpent, eat the
forbidden fruit, hide from
God, speak with God, and
receive the judgements
and curses.
A Biblical text associated
with the account of the fall
has also caused some to
ponder the timing of death in the animal kingdom.
Immediately after the fall, God graciously made
garments of skin - probably animal hides (Gen 3:21)
- to clothe Adam and his wife to cover their shame.
While the exact timing of the sequence of events
leading up to Gods gift of clothes to Adam and Eve
is not given, it seems certain that the dialogue
between God and Adam was on the same day as
God was walking in the garden.
Furthermore, it seems most likely that Gods
judgements and curses were uttered immediately
upon Adams admission of guilt, and that God
clothed them with the animal hides at the same time
to complete His dealings with them. The question
then arises as to the time that the skin was taken
from the animals and processed into leather hides
that the Lord God used to make the garments.
Could it be that animals had already been killed
by other animals or man for food, or slaughtered
for hides that may have been used for bedding and
baskets for carrying things, for example?
6. How do you deal with the issue of time within
this view?
Much could be said in response to this question
since it is inherent in the title of the theory under
discussion (Day-Age) and at the very heart of the
reason why the committee is meeting. First we are
told that God is from eternity past, from everlasting
to everlasting, an eternal God. Time itself was a part
of His creation. Time, as Herman Bavinck
expressed it, is the measure of creaturely
existence. What he terms intrinsic time is a
mode of existence of all created and finite beings.

By extrinsic time he means the standard


employed to measure motion... We derive it from
the motion of the heavenly bodies, which is
constantly and universally known, Gen 1:14
It is this extrinsic time, time as we know and
measure it, which has its beginning only on the
fourth day when we are told:

And there was morning and there was evening - the


nth day. So even this refrain hints at something
unusual about the time of creation, that may have
been designed for us to notice.

And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of


the sky to separate the day from the night, and let
them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and
years (Gen 1:14).

a. This view is not concerned with the absolute


period of time God used in each of His six days of
creation. It recognizes this period in earths
history as special when time, as it has been given
to us (and space), was created. In as much as
this creative event appeared to have occurred on
the fourth day, this view prefers not to stipulate
periods of mans perception of time for the first
three days, since the Sovereign Creator of them is
Himself outside of them. It also acknowledges that
the Creator may have used the process of growth
for example, as we now perceive growth, a timeconsuming activity, to bring forth vegetation. In
addition, the days (ages) within the Day-Age
model, can be overlapping to allow insects and birds
to be created in time to facilitate plant reproduction,
when plants had grown to reproductive age.

On the other hand, intrinsic time, the possibility


for beginning, end, and sequence of events, comes
into existence with the beginning of creation. The
Lord is sovereign and not part of His creation; He is
outside of it and therefore outside of our perception
of time (and space). Inasmuch as God created the
space we know (the heavens and the earth on day 1)
before He constituted our natural measure and
knowledge of time (on day 4), it seems logical to
conclude that He at least began His creation in His
own sense of time. Perhaps the Lord is trying to
communicate this to us through the psalmist in the
Old Testament (Ps 90:4) and Peter in the New
Testament (2 Peter 3:8) when we are told that
With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a
thousand years are like a day. In other words, our
perception of time is not the Lords.

b. This view does not need to consider the so-called


appearance of age problem; that God might have
created things differently from how we perceive the
order of nature (general revelation) today from the
present interpretations of the findings of science.
e.g. that the speed of light has changed; that
carnivorous animals and fish were once
herbivorous; that stars were created with strings of
light attached; that rocks were created with isotope
ratios suggesting age; that fossils were created with
the appearance of age; that fossils, have apparently
different ages with some of them being very old.

If this is the case, are we being presumptuous, or


even arrogant imposing the time we know on the
Lord for His creative work? For our sake, so that
we might know that He undertook His creative work
in six discrete steps of time, He gives the refrain
And there was evening, and there was morning the nth day. Even the order of the two times of day
in the refrain is peculiar from our perception of time
and work; they bracket the night-time. We
characteristically work during the daytime, and so
if we were writing such a refrain describing our
creative work it would be far more logical to write,

7. What are the strengths of the Day-Age


interpretation?

c. The Day-Age construct preserves the general


sequence of events as portrayed in the text.
d. The position can, and has been, arrived at through
exegesis of the text, particularly what is said about
the sun on the fourth day and what is said about
growth and development in Genesis 2 and does not
require the influence of Darwinian evolutionists, or
any of the natural sciences.
e. The position accounts for the description of the
events on the fourth day, including the beginning
of solar days, and no non-literal explanation of the
text dealing with this creation is called for. Neither
do we have to impose solar days on days 1-3 of
creation before the sun was in existence.

f. This viewpoint readily accommodates the


preponderance of inference from present day
scientific interpretation from general revelation, in
particular with data from astrophysics, geology and
the fossil record.

g. The time that might be envisioned for the


accomplishment of the extensive list of events that
occur on the sixth day of creation present no
problem to this view. On this day the wild animals,
the livestock and all the creatures that move along
the ground were created. Then Adam was created
and put in the Garden of Eden to take care of it with
the single proviso that he was not to eat from the
tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Then the
Lord brought all the beasts of the field and all the
birds of the air before Adam for the man to name
them, but from amongst them no suitable helper
was found. So the Lord caused Adam to fall into a
deep sleep, took a rib from him and created Eve to
be his wife and helper. Some would also include
in the events of this day, the dealings of Eve with
the serpent, the eating by Adam and Eve of the
forbidden fruit, their sewing of fig leaves to make
coverings for themselves after the realization of
their nakedness, their hiding from the Lord and then
accounting to Him of their sin, the Lords cursing of
the serpent, the man and woman and the ground, the
Lords fashioning garments of skin for the man and
the woman to clothe them, and then banishing them
from the Garden of Eden.
8. What are the difficulties for the Day-Age
interpretation?
a. Without the concept of age overlap, it allows
that the universe as we know it could have existed
in intermediate states for long periods of time, e.g.
vegetation requiring insects/birds for propagation to
be in existence without insects/birds.
b. Overlapping days (ages) are hard to propose
from a reading of the text which more speaks of
consecutive times (days).
c. Green plants were created on day 3. Although
light had been created on day 1, we know
nothing about the nature of this light and its ability
to substitute for sunlight (not available until day 4)
as the energy source for the plant life. Thus, it could
be argued that the green plants could not exist for a
very long period without the sun.
d. Need to accept that at least the initial creatures
of every species were created by God with some
appearance of age (since this view affirms that there

HOME ASSIGNMENT. HOW WAS IT?

Wendy Marshall, with her husband David,
has lived and ministered in Japan with OMF
International since 2000. David and Wendy are
members of Grace Christian Church, Redbank
WPC. Their three children are Callum (16),
Douglas (nearly 13), and Jamie (10). The
Marshalls spent 12-months in Australia for
home assignment from July 2014.
Our year in Australia was full. Even though we
were there for twelve months, we didnt lack
for things to do. Over the year we drove over
25,000 km, visited 20 churches, met about 50
individuals or families for meals or coffee,
and spoke at two conferences and 15 other
meetings. We mostly worked in south-east
Queensland, but also flew to Western Australia,
Canberra, and Sydney.
Re-establish links
One of the goals of our home assignment was
to forge strong ties with our new home church.
During our last term in Japan we switched
our membership from MetroWest Community
Church to Grace Christian Church at Redbank
Plains. We already had some connections at
Grace, but our year in Australia gave us the
opportunity to be involved in the Youth group,
Kids club, womens Bible study, mid-week
Bible study, Mens Meat Night, as well as
worship with them on Sundays as often as we
could. We also had many informal
opportunities over meals or coffee to get to
know people in the congregation. In the weeks
before we left we were excited to have a dozen
new families or individuals sign up to receive
our prayer letter. It was very sad to leave them,
but that was an indication that wed met our
goal.
We renewed many other links as well and
made new ones. One that has no obvious
significance to our ministry in Japan is
connecting with the wrestling scene in
Australia. However it is something that will
help our eldest son return to Australia for tertiary education in two and a half years time.

Making connections for him was important


this home assignment. A home church that he
loved and a wrestling club that he also enjoyed
are two things that he can look forward to
returning to when he, by Gods grace, takes up
tertiary education in Brisbane in 2018. These
connections will help smooth this huge
transition that he must negotiate.
Reconnect with family and friends
Whenever we come back to Australia we plan
to spend time with family and close friends.
As none of our family members live in the
Brisbane-Ipswich area where we were based,
that meant travel. We travelled in each of the
spring, summer, and Easter holidays to spend
time with family who live up to eight hours
from Brisbane. We spent time with family who
live closer on a number of weekends too.
We also spent time meeting friends. I met a lot
of people individually for coffee and our
weekends were usually busy with catching up
with people. I met one long-term friend
regularly for coffee, which was fantastic but
very sad when we had to say goodbye in June.
There is always a feeling after being away for
so many years that you want to make up for
lost time, but that can never happen. However
making the most of the time we did have was
very satisfying.
Reporting to sending churches
As Ive already mentioned above, we visited
20 supporting churches. Four of those were
churches new to us, the others wed visited
several times before. It was a great blessing
to be able to thank churches and individuals
within churches for their support, and
encourage others to think about Japan as a
mission field, perhaps for the first time.
We first started visiting churches to talk about
Japan and Gods call on our lives 16 years
ago, more than half of the 20 we visited have

been with us since then. It always encourages


us when we remember those whove walked
alongside us from the start of this journey.
Rest and refreshment
It was definitely not a year-long holiday. We
struggled to make time for just our family.
January was quiet, however. We did almost no
deputation work. During the year we also
took two short camping trips away just as a
family.
Some of our rest and refreshment happened
with extended family. For example staying
with family over the Christmas/New Year
period and camping with family at Easter were
both restful experiences.
By the time we returned to Japan, though, we
were a bit peopled out. We were tired of
talking to so many different people about what
we do in Japan and answering questions. It
was a blessing to be able to return to Japan at
the start of the summer holidays here, and take
several weeks to settle back into life in Japan
before we had to start work in our respective
roles here. We needed the break, and so did our
boys.
But home assignment also afforded a different
kind of rest. It is stressful to live in a country
where you dont understand the language as
well as youd like and the culture isnt what
you grew up knowing. David and I found
Australia restful in this way, we didnt have
to work so hard just to do daily life. Australia
is so spacious, space we crave in Japan. We
sometimes call our time in Australia
space-therapy! Our suburb had lots of green
and plenty of birds. All these things were
restful!
Re-energising for future work
An unexpected opportunity came Davids way
early this year. As wed planned, he finished
his Masters in Education course at the end of
2014. But then he received an offer to teach
at the college where hed studied. So during
semester one this year he taught education
students about teaching maths. It was a
challenge that stretched him, but he enjoyed

getting a different perspective on teaching and


the training of teachers.
I was thankful for a break from the relentless
work on the Japan Harvest, I now start back
at the magazine with energy to continue. The
year away has given me a bigger perspective
as well as a rest. I was also able to go to a
national writers conference in Victoria, which
gave me more of an understanding of the
Christian Writers scene in Australia.
These were our big goals for our home
assignment. Its good to sit back now and
review how the year went. Uprooting a whole
family to another country for a year is a big
deal. Home assignment is a requirement of
our mission, but it is good to look back and
know that it was worthwhile expending all that
effort.
We enjoyed interacting with many of you and
thank you for your faithful prayer and financial
support. Thank you too for welcoming us into
your churches and lives.
Were now planning to be in Japan three more
years, Lord willing, before we do it all again in
2018/2019.

PRISON MINISTRY IN WA

Tony is a WPC teaching elder and a member
of Mandurah WPC. Tony is employed by the
Council of Churches WA to work three days a
week at Banksia prison and one day a week at
Wandoo Reintegration Facility.
Banksia Hill is a Detention Centre for all
juveniles between the ages of 10-18, both male
and female, in WA. It is by far the hardest
facility I have worked in during my Prison
Ministry. If you have teenage children you will
know exactly what Im talking about.
The juveniles at Banksia Hill are very
immature, impulsive and the vast majority are
illiterate. (To combat this I have distributed CD
Bibles). Sadly, many have been the
victims of horrendous abuse and
severe neglect. Many detainees tell
me they are much happier
being incarcerated than being at
home, hungry, scared and abused.
This really saddens me.
Musters are at maximum capacity
at Banksia Hill, which is around
190. The majority are males with around seven
females. 80% of detainees are Aboriginal. The
large numbers have put a strain on the staff
and also affect the availability of programmes.
Over the last three months there have been two
incidents of detainees getting onto the roof
which can be quite stressful for management
and staff. Due to staff shortages and a high rate
of staff sickness there can be anything up to
fifteen staff short on any given shift which I
believe contributes to low staff morale.

baptisms and one reaffirmation of faith.
It was a great encouragement that the
management allowed family members to
attend and arranged for a cake to be specially
made for the occasion. I held a Christmas
Service on the Family Day which was a great
opportunity to share the gospel. About 180
residents, 200 family members and around 50
staff attended.
We recently started a new Youth Alpha course
which is well attended. Although it is the
hardest facility I have worked in it is also the
easiest to share the Gospel. Most
of the detainees, when asked the
question Do you believe in Jesus?
say yes. When asked why, they
say He died for me. Presently
we have between 30-40 juveniles
signed for the Youth Alpha Course,
which is about 25% of the
detainees.
Prison Fellowships programme on Saturdays
is also going well. PF have funded a Graffiti
Project which involves two professional
graffiti artists coming in and showing detainees
how to express themselves in a positive way.
I have recently met with staff from YWAM
who will hopefully be coming in to work with
predominantly the female residents.

The skateboard park is now open and several


semi-professional skateboarders have come
in to Banksia Hill to show off their skills and
to teach the detainees how to use the park in a
responsible manner.

One of the disadvantages of not having


regional juvenile detention centres is that many
detainees do not receive any visits from family
members due to logistics. This causes a lot of
stress and anxiety as some detainees are very
young especially for those on remand. For
some it is the first time they have been away
from their home surroundings.

The Sunday services are going well. The


number of detainees attending can be quite
erratic which I believe is due to staff

privately by SERCO, for male offenders aged
18-24. The inmates are called residents.

Recently the age limit has been increased to 28


as the musters were low. Since the increase
in the age limit Wandoo has had a substantial
increase in residents and is now running at full
capacity, which is between 60-70 residents.
I have held several memorial services. At times
family members have attended which is a great
blessing. I held a Christmas Service which
was well attended by residents and staff. Our
musician from Mandurah, Helen Fitzgerald,
kindly offered to play which was another great
blessing.
As you can imagine, one a day per week is
a very short time so I have to be efficient in
how I spend my time with the residents. When
I first started at Wandoo in September 2014
it was spiritually dry and in much need of a
revival. With much prayer there has been an
increase in numbers attending the Youth Alpha
and we have been truly blessed. The numbers
attending have increased from around two to

eleven. The course is a great time of


fellowship and most residents who attend have
really opened up about personal issues.
I met with the senior minister from Lakeside
Baptist Church who wanted to assist me in my
ministry at Wandoo. We had a good meeting
and consequently we have four to six residents
on Section 95 who are allowed to attend their
Sunday Service. I also have two mature
Christians from Lakeside coming in to assist
me and to encourage the residents during the
Christian courses we run. I have been working
closely with Prison Fellowship to establish a
team of volunteers to come in and hold regular
Sunday Services. This would cater for
residents who are not on Section 95.
I give grateful thanks to God for giving me the
privilege of being a chaplain to these needy
people.

(15 REASONS TO TAKE GENESIS AS HISTORY)

Since being converted Ive been receiving
material from various creation ministries. The
reason I support them is that they address the
elephant in the room that besets most gospel
ministries in western churches and that is the
theory of evolution. There is little doubt that
our society and most of the West is saturated
with evolutionary thought and belief.
How many times have we endeavoured to
try to tell our family, friends, neighbours or
workmates of their need for a Saviour who can
address their sin problem only to be met with
smug smiles, vacant looks or outright
derision? While this to some extent goes with
the territory I believe this bedrock of
evolutionary teaching is what many in our
society, either consciously or unconsciously,
are building their life upon. While we are
trying to tell them of the remedy for what
happened in Eden, they are believing that they
are answerable to no-one; that they are an
evolutionary descendant of monkeys!
Paul in Acts, when first addressing the Greeks,
opened the scriptures emphasising that God
was their Creator and then preached the
Gospel. He started at Genesis and I believe that
is where we need to start.
Recently, I had a workmate who asked me how
old I believed the world to be. He asked this as
he had been listening to Dr Karl on talk back
radio and had been challenged by someone
arguing the creationist position. My workmate,
knowing I was a churchy, wanted to know
what I thought. I replied that I believed the
earth and the creation to be some six thousand
years old give or take. My workmate was
jaw-droppingly astounded and asked how I
could possibly believe that! I said it is the

position the evidence indicates. After some


further discussion I said I would give him
some literature to look at. He took it and
returned it a day or two later without
comment. I didnt push the issue and thought
that he wasnt really interested. Some two or
three months later while travelling together in
a work vehicle, out of the blue, my workmate
said to me that I had really disturbed him.
To start with I wasnt sure what he was on
about but he opened up by saying that our
discussion on origins had got him thinking
even to the extent of discussing it with his
loved ones and others close to him. Obviously
I was delighted and said I was pleased he was
disturbed and would be happy to discuss with
him the issues when he was ready. As far as
I know he still hasnt turned to the Lord so
please pray for him. The Lord knows who
he is.
My point is this. If when my workmate first
asked about the talk-back caller Id responded
with Oh, he is mistaken, the creation is
billions of years old and he is just a misguided
fanatic., my friend would have most likely
trotted off happy that his world view wasnt
being challenged. Compromising Christianity
or the scriptures are no threat to anyone.
But, some argue, you are wrong. The evidence
says the universe is billions of years old.The
simple response to that is, No, it doesnt.
Included in all the evidence given for long
ages there are many suppositions that cast
serious doubt on the so called evidence. For
further information on this issue go to the
website creation.com. Simply stated, there is
no scientific reason not to take Genesis 1-3 as
read, including, and this is where I take
fraternal issue with brother John of Maida
Vale, six normal days. That is what we now
call 24 hour days. It is hard to know how God

could have made it any clearer, that that is


what He meant when revealing His truth to
Moses. God speaks of evening and a morning,
and the days are numbered. If God didnt mean
six days, why would He have inspired Moses
to write what he did?

Finally, there is no need to compromise the


clear teaching of scripture particularly to
appease the flavour of the month of the
scientific and secular community, especially
when their so called expertise is largely
philosophical and not actual scientific data.

One of brother Johns objections was a


perceived lack of time on day six to do all that
was done. But this doesnt hold water. Think
about it. The first day of Adam and Eves
existence, without sin, in full fellowship with
their God and Creator and without the
physical, mental and spiritual consequences
of sin that we endure now. I would doubt that
the busyness of that day would have been a
challenge at all. In fact, I sometimes wonder
what they did for the rest of the day!

Authority says: If you study the history of
science you will have much less respect for
its supposed supreme authority than you had
when you began. It is nothing but a simple
fact of history to say that a hundred years ago
and less, scientists were teaching dogmatically
and with supreme confidence that the thyroid
gland, the pituitary gland and other glands
were nothing but vestigial remains. They said
they had no value and no function whatsoever.
Now this is not theory. It is fact. They asserted
dogmatically that these were useless remains.
But today we know these glands are essential
to life. Without arguing in detail about
scientific matters, I say that it is not only
lacking in faith and unscriptural, but it is
ignorant to accord to Science, Modern
Knowledge or Learning an authority which
they do not possess. Let us be scientifically
sceptical with regard to the assertions of
Science. Let us remember that so many of their
assertions are mere suppositions and theories
which cannot be proved, and which may very
well be disproved, as so many have been
disproved during the past hundred years.

Another problem for brother Johns position


are the queries his position brings to other
parts of scripture. For instance,
Exodus 20:8-11: Remember the Sabbath
day, to keep it holy. Six days shall you labour
and do all your work, but the seventh day is a
Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it, you shall
not do any work, you, or your son, or your
daughter, your male servant or your
female servant, or your livestock or the
sojourner who is within your gates. For in
six days the Lord made the heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the
seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the
Sabbath day and made it holy.
Johns position makes verse 11 say, For in six
periods of time the Lord made the heavens and
earth, the sea, and all that is in them but He
rested on the seventh period of time therefore
the Lord blessed the seventh period of time
and made it holy. Hardly the way to explain
to His people how to handle a working week!
R. C. Sproul and G.I. Williamson have articles
defending the six day creation position and are
excellent reading. They can be accessed by
typing in their names and six day creation
on Google. Both men are fine biblical scholars
from the Reformed tradition.

information, as did Paul in Greece, we can
meet the elephant in the room of our society
and our peers head on and make an impact for
the gospel. We can show the paucity of
intelligent thinking in evolutionary belief and
that to trust the scripture is reasonable. They
are then much better prepared to consider the
claims of the gospel.

Dear friends,
We have been back in North Carolina since
Aug 3. I now have a better understanding of
what the Apostle meant in Romans 8:18 when
he said For I consider that the sufferings of
this present time are not worthy to be
compared with the glory-----. For now our
sufferings are behind and forgotten (jet lag,
etc.) and I am remembering only the glory
of the good things that we saw and
experienced.

In our favourite country in Asia we were


able to interview some of the parents of the
national workers children in Grace
Residence at Grace Academy. It is always such
an encouragement for us to talk to these people
who are on the front lines as the Gospel moves
into new areas. The work is hard and
dangerous and the opposition
takes many forms, yet they tell
of it with much joy and victory
as they have seen Gods power
at work. They regularly cast out
demons and pray for healing,
yet they brag only of the Lords
work in hearts.

They laugh with us at the unusual ways God


cares for them and provides, as when a bicycle
broke down in a remote area as this couple was
riding to a place of ministry. The very next
person who came along that lonely road was a
bicycle repairman.
Let us know if you would like us to come and
give the presentation we are putting together
from those interviews.
On July 10 we attended the 25th anniversary
Founders Day at Grace Academy. What a
joy to sit in the assembly area with 1200
(about half of them Christian) students and
their Christian teachers, remembering the first
day in 1990 when we had prayed for enough
students to appear in the little school meeting
next door in a rented house. Even on that day
I received a message in our home from the
School to stop praying; they had all they could
handle even then. Stories abound of students
and teachers alike who have been blessed
since as the message of Gods Grace has been
woven into the courses and all of life at Grace
Academy.
Of course, as always when we visit that land,
we enjoyed our family as we stayed in our
apartment in their lovely home and had
opportunity to visit with many friends who
enjoy their hospitality there. We miss our son,
Phil, and Amina and their girls now here in
North Carolina as they were with us in much
of May and June when they
werent travelling and visiting
churches.

enjoyed friends of many
years who are serving in
various capacities in the
institutions and
churches. As you know
this is the second time
we were doing these
types of things this year
because of the
25th anniversary
celebrations and the MTW Asia conference.
David also found time to take a hike with some
of the boys of the Bhogpur Home.

The MTW conference in Malaysia was a


refreshing time of spiritual nourishment,
renewed friendships and rejoicing in many
new labourers being sent into the harvest in
amazing ways to follow the Lord and advance
His Kingdom. How thankful we are to have
had an opportunity to do that in our day. We
are still ready to follow.
On our way to the conference (well, it wasnt
exactly on the way) we took a personal flight
to Taiwan to spend some days with our son,
Alan, Chinglien, Tevah and Rinah. That was
a delightful visit too as we were able to get a
preview of the songs in the musical Alan has
composed for his students at Bethany Christian
International School to perform in December,
worshipped with them at Friendship
Inernational Church, and were whisked
downtown to see the famous 101 sky scraper
and the movie Jurassic World. If you can steel

yourself to the stomping


and crunching of
dinosaurs it was a
delightful plot.
Praise the Lord with
us for safety and health
in our travels and for all
that we have reported.

1. for continued freedom for the Lords people
there to do the excellent work they are doing.
2. for continued permission to receive the
funds that have been coming from abroad from
friends like you. Rumor has it that this may be
restricted or even withheld.
3. for funds needed for completion of the
classrooms at Grace Academy.
4. for funds for the operation of the
Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
5. for a new principal for the Seminary.
6. for a visa for the interim principal. Dr.
Chacko has had to take over again temporarily
until that problem is solved.
7. for a new principal for Home Academy at
the Childrens Home.
8. for continued growth and blessing on Valley
Church that Phil and Amina helped to plant
and for guidance for the development of a new
congregation. A Bible study in the targeted
area is being held.
Thank you for your prayers and continued
concern for the work in this part of South Asia.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
A search for the full lyrics of this well known
song will result in a few different variations.
Most of us are only familiar with one or two
verses.

Jesus loves me! He who died,


Heavens gate to open wide,
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.

The song was originally penned as a poem


within the novel Say and Seal written by Susan
Warner and published in 1860. Susan asked
her sister Anna (they co-wrote a few books) to
write the poem as an inclusion in the novel.
It appeared in a chapter where a child was
dying. The main character of the book recited
the poem that began Jesus loves me, this I
know, for the Bible tells me so. These words
comforted the boy during his last moments of
life.

A couple of years after the book was


published, composer William Bradbury read
the book and was moved to put the poem to a
melody and add in a one-line chorus.

Westminster Presbyterian Church, Belconnen, ACT, is seeking an associate pastor to complement our senior
pastor and work more broadly in a ministry team. He must have well-developed relational skills, be gifted in
preaching, and have a passion for exploring different modes of outreach.

THE CHURCH - WPCB

WPC Belconnen is part of the body of Christ,


heartily committed to the Scriptures in all of faith and life,
embracing the doctrines of grace (as encapsulated in the Westminster Confession of Faith),
desiring to exalt the Lord, edify one another, and evangelise the lost,
seeking to equip one another to be salt and light in the society in which God has placed us,
comprising people from a diversity of cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds,
cooperating according to a pattern outlined in our WPC Book of Church Order,
assembling together in Belconnen (NW region of Canberra, the capital of Australia).
WPC Belconnen commenced in 1988, and is now a thriving church with 150 or so meeting for worship on a
typical Sunday. We purchased a building in Cook in 2002, which has capacity for further growth of the church.
We are looking to the Lord to use us to reach the lost with the gospel, to gather in His harvest, and to extend
His kingdom.
Our current congregational activities include morning & evening worship on the Lords day, Sunday school
after morning worship, Bible studies coordinated with the sermons, a mid-week prayer meeting, and more.
Outreach activities include a ladies craft group, a playgroup, and walk-up evangelism.

THE MAN

We are looking for a man whom God is equipping and calling to minister among us. He would
1. Love the Lord and be able to subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith as embodying the system
of doctrine taught in the Scriptures.
2. Serve as part of a team (including the senior pastor and ruling elders) together responsible for providing
Biblical teaching, pastoral care, counsel and leadership for the body. He will balance and complement the
existing team.
3. Be able to relate to a wide cross section of people, including those from other cultures. He would be keen
to use these skills to build deep and broad bonds with the various ethnic groups that constitute our
church. He would also be able to work well with youth, seeking to build the youth ministry within the
church.
4. Have a gift in preaching that is characterised by strong Biblical faithfulness and depth of application. He
would be expected to preach about three times a month, with a particular focus on the evening service.
5. Have a passion for the lost and be creative in exploring options for outreach. These would include
outreach into the local community, various ethnic communities, and potentially the local universities.

an obituary to common sense


From a UK paper
Today we mourn the passing of a
beloved old friend, Common Sense, who
has been with us for many years. No one
knows for sure how old he was, since
his birth records were long ago lost in
bureaucratic red tape. He will be
remembered as having cultivated such
valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the
rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isnt always fair; and
- Maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound
financial policies (dont spend more
than you can earn) and reliable strategies
(adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly
when well-intentioned but overbearing
regulations were set in place. Reports
of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual
harassment for kissing a classmate; teens
suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only
worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when
parents attacked teachers for doing the
job that they themselves had failed to do
in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools
were required to get parental consent to
administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a
student; but could not inform parents

when a student became pregnant and


wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as
the churches became businesses; and
criminals received better treatment than
their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you
couldnt defend yourself from a burglar
in your own home and the burglar could
sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to
live, after a woman failed to realize that
a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She
spilled a little in her lap, and was
promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death,
- by his parents, Truth and Trust,
- by his wife, Discretion,
- by his daughter, Responsibility,
- and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;
- I Know My Rights
- I Want It Now
- Someone Else Is To Blame
- Im A Victim
- Pay me for Doing Nothing
Not many attended his funeral because
so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on.
If not, join the majority and do nothing.
