(Waltham, MA, USA - June 3, 2013) Olympus, a world leader in nondestructive testing
technologies, is pleased to introduce the UltraWave LRT, an advanced flaw detection
system that utilizes guided wave technology to perform long-range inspections on pipes and
pipelines.
Guided wave technology is now a widely accepted nondestructive (NDT) technique for
inspecting and localizing areas of potential degradation, such as corrosion and metal loss.
The technology is based on low-frequency ultrasonic waves that travel lengthwise along a
pipe, collecting cross sectional data and detecting wall thickness variations. Since there is
minimal loss in energy, these waves can be propagated over a long distance. It enables
screening for defects from a single inspection position, covering 100% of the pipes
circumference, over tens of meters in length. Prove-up inspection conducted at the specific
indication position helps maximize the efficiency of a corrosion management program,
without compromising data quality.
Offering the capacity to screen in-service pipes and pipelines, guided wave inspection is used
for above-ground conventional structures, as well as advanced applications such as the
detection of corrosion in buried, insulated, coated, and vertical pipes. It also detects corrosion
at supports, clamps, and pipe racks. Guided wave technology pinpoints locations that require
further inspection and avoids unnecessary excavation, coating removal, or scaffolding when
no flaw is detected. The use of this technology provides a significant reduction in operating
costs and is considered as an inspection solution for unpiggable pipes.
The UltraWave LRT system features a complete package, including advanced software,
portable battery-operated acquisition unit, robust touch screen laptop, and compact probes
with bands and bladders for various pipe diameters. The low clearance of the inspection
collar permits installation in limited access locations, as well as easy on-site transportation
and shipping.
The software is equipped with a unique F-scan color map that displays the entire frequency
range acquired during the inspection. With this color map, selecting the most sensitive
frequencies for further analysis is fast and intuitive for the operator. Dual active and synthetic
focusing capabilities ascertain the circumferential position and extent of each indication,
ensuring enhanced flaw evaluation and advanced data analysis. The user-friendly software
offers a step-by-step wizard for entering all relevant inspection parameters and intuitive
database management with a tree control structure. For ease of use, automated yet fully
customizable report generation compiles all the inspection data into a single document.
Olympus NDT is confident that this new system is an efficient and cost-effective solution for
improving the inspection productivity of pipe integrity management programs. With its
worldwide technical support, training facilities, and global after-sales service centers,
Olympus ensures continuous support to its global customers providing them with the latest
and most innovative inspection solutions.

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is the oldest and most commonly used in line inspection method for
metal-loss regions in gas-transmission pipeline . MFL can reliably detect metal loss due to corrosi
sometimes, gouging. In addition, while not designed for this purpose, MFL can sometimes find ot
metallurgical and geometric conditions.
The VEDAQ -FL is a PC- based, portable, high performance EMI system designed to inspect flow
are located above ground and NOT buried pipeline. The flow line is inspected between the suppor
the pipe off the ground. The mag coil, " buggy " and "detector heads " are split with a hinge (cl
type) and can be removed and installed on the pipeline without cutting the pipe. A travelling moto
buggy " propels the detector head along the pipe , detecting 3D transverse flaws such as pitting, cr
corrosion, while the True- Wall magnetic wall system monitors the wall thickness, detecting large
wall loss, i.e. corrosion..
Inspection data is displayed in "real time" on the laptop computer and the data is stored to the hard
The data can be copied or transmitted by wireless. Calibration of the system is recommended to b

1/16 drill thru holes and a 5% or 10% wall loss, which should be sufficient to set the system up to
typical pitting and corrosion in flow lines located above ground.

Although Guided Wave testing is also commonly known as Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GW
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT), it is fundamentally very different to conventional ultraso
Guided Wave testing uses very low ultrasonic frequencies compared to those used in conventional
typically between 10~100kHz. However, higher frequency can also be used in some cases but dete
range is severely reduced. In additional, the underlying physics of guided wave is more complex t
waves.
Asset Integrity Management plays a key role in the maintenance and improvement of process perf
on plants. As a result of external factors and use, offshore and onshore facilities and their compon
experience material failure like corrosion, wall loss, mechanical integrity anomaly, stress and strai
their service life. These effects are potentially dangerous and can result in unplanned shutdown.
Low frequency ultrasonic waves are used to detect defects and imperfections some distance away
ultrasonic source in a range of components. A typical application of LRUT is the detection of corr
metal loss in pipes and pipelines. A set of piezoelectric transducers sends the ultrasonic waves in b
directions along the length of the pipe. The same transducers detect the return signal and identify h
along the pipe the imperfections lie.
This technology is particularly suitable for inspecting pipes that are covered in insulation, run und
are buried, as a significant length of pipe can be inspected by uncovering a small amount of the pi
single location. Although propagation distances vary according to pipe geometry, contents, coating
and general condition, it is not unusual that a range of up to 30m (100') in either direction from the
transducer can be inspected.Long range (or Guided Wave) ultrasonic inspection is different
from >conventional ultrasonic inspection , since a ring of transducers fitted round the outside of th
being inspected sends a sound wave along the length of the component, rather than through it. The
component itself (more often than not, a pipe) constrains, or guides, the waves along the pipe wall
term 'Guided Waves'. Guided Waves are a special case of plate waves in a pipe. The particle displa
are similar, but because the pipe acts as a wave-guide, the pulses can travel over even longer dista
exceeding 100m under some conditions.
Long range ultrasonic technologies have been proven for use in pipes with diameters from 1.5" to
However, the methods and equipment have been adapted for further applications, including:
Chemical plant: heat exchangers, embedded and cased pipes, storage tanks
Oil and gas: offshore structures, risers, flow lines
Automotive and aerospace: oil tanks
Constructions: bridges, ropes, jetty, sheet piling, rails, chains
