Twenty Pounds

IN the documentary we watched, Gerda Weissmann recalls being told her family had to leave their home with no more than 20 pounds of belongings, a plight shared by many Jews. IN this assignment, you are going to write about what it would be like if you were forced to leave your home and could only take 20 pounds of you possessions with you. To begin your paper, describe the following scenario and answer all of the questions: IMAGINE what it would be like if you and your family were forced to leave your home. You are allowed to take 20 pounds of your most precious possessions. What would you take? What would you be forced to leave behind? On what would you base your choices about what or what not to take? How would this make you feel? Would monetary value mean less or more than emotional/personal value? Why? YOU need to ask one other person who is not in English 9 the questions above (you may ask parents, staff, teachers, other students, etc). What did they say they would choose and why? Record their answers. Compare their answers to yours. ALSO discuss the difference between packing for a vacation—the choices being made for a trip in which you plan to return home— compared with being forced from your home, never to return. Many Jews believed that they would be returning home soon, and so they packed lightly. How would you pack differently if you planned on coming home? Your paper needs to be AT LEAST one page, single spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt font. Your paper does not need a title. Make sure your name is on your paper. This assignment is DUE March 17th.
