Federal Forest Dollars Should Remain in Qualified Districts
The federal government sends money to over 200 school districts in the state where the government has forest land which is taken out of the tax base. The money is to address the impact of the shrinking timber industry and lost revenues. Below is listed districts that collect $8,000 or more in 2010 from this allotment. This money is similar to federal impact aid that districts with military bases, federal dams, or reservations receive with one BIG DIFFERENCE: The state deducts state education funding equal to the amount of federal forest dollars these districts receive, so the net gain is $0. It doesn't do so for federal impact aid. The Committee for Levy Equalization has decided to begin lobbying both in Washington State and in Washington D.C. to forbid the state from deducting state education funding due to the federal timber dollars a school district receives. For some school districts this is insignficant money, but for many it would be a big shot in the arm. In any event, these dollars belong to these districts and should remain there. Please contact your congressman to include a clause in federal law similar to that for federal impact aid that bans state education fund cuts due to timber dollars and contact state legislators to end this practice.
