Ten Years 2000–2010
P I Q U A N T E D I T I O N S
This catalogue refects 10 years of Piquant, 10 years also that represent a time of tumultuous
changes in the publishing industry at large, and the dust has not yet settled! This catalogue
celebrates God’s particular faithfulness to us over the decade. What a privilege it has been to
be to be part of the ‘birthing’ of each of these lovely ‘babies’: books that continue to delight,
encourage and instruct us.
Why ‘piquant’? There were several reasons for the name: ‘piquant’ plays on ‘pieter kwant’
(which was often misspelt ‘peter quant’); and ‘piquant’ means ‘pungent, spicy’, which strongly
reminded us of 2 Cor 2:14—which Peter Cousins, an editor and friend and a long-time mentor,
paraphrased for us in 1999 as: ‘to spread in every place the aroma that comes from knowing
Christ’. (The subsequent verses usefully express a sober warning for anyone setting out as a
Christian in business enterprise!)
An introductory letter to friends and family further explained our initial vision: “Through Piquant
we hope to publish books in the arts that achieve the goals of ‘theology animating the arts’
and ‘art seasoning faith’, as well as books that support Christian missions, missionaries and
believers in the Third World ... The Piquant vision expresses our lifelong love for books and
art, theology, and the Lord of all theology. It is enabled by Pieter Kwant’s lifetime experience
across the spectrum of bookselling and publishing.”
To facilitate Pieter’s involvement in larger projects and to promote manuscripts that fell outside
our lists in the arts and in missions, Pieter also worked as a literary agent. In 2004 we separated
The Piquant Agency and Piquant Editions Ltd, which became a registered company.
This catalogue is dedicated with our deep thankfulness to each of the authors mentioned in the
pages that follow and to all those who have helped us so generously over the years: Mike Chris-
tian, Hannah Dyke, Peter Cousins, Jonathan Kearney, Luke Lewis, Paul Lewis, Angela Lewis,
Pamela Murray, Sue Prior, Rodney Shepherd, Ruth Slater, Tara Smith, Huw Spanner, Isobel Ste-
venson, Naomi Thompson, and others who have encouraged and supported us at key moments!
To God be all the glory!
The frst Piquant title was The Psalms: An Artist’s Impression by the Dutch artist Anneke Kaai.
It was soon followed by Paul Hattaway’s full-colour introduction to the peoples of China: Opera-
tion China, a 720-page missions resource. Those two titles defned our lists in the arts and in
missions, a combination that was viewed with gentle bemusement by our publishing colleagues,
for the lists appealed to such very diverse audiences. But now, a decade later, mission organiza-
tions are rushing to mobilize the arts and artists in mission, and the work God gave Piquant to do
appears to have had a prophetic touch!

Piquant Editions mission and theology titles
include books that introduce areas of ‘hidden’
ministry—eg the church in China, outreach to
seafarers, the work of L’Abri—to readers in
the West, as well as books that can be used
as practical mission and theology resources,
including ones that enable readers to teach
what they have learnt to others straight away!

PA UL hAT TAWAy
Paul Hattaway is a writer, missions researcher
and the international director of Asia Harvest,
an organization committed to serving the church
throughout Asia (http://www.asiaharvest.org).
He has also been the foundational author in the
Piquant Editions missions list.
We well remember the day in 1999 when Paul
walked into our home with the manuscript of
Operation China in his backpack! Representing
15 years of research, meticulously organized and
presented, complete with colour photographs,
we knew this project simply had to be pub-
lished—the beginning of the Piquant missions
list! Despite being a robust 720-page paperback,
Operation China sold 23,765 copies world-wide
and continues to be available on CD-Rom.
Paul became a best-selling author with Brother
Yun through his next title, Te Heavenly Man,
an inspirational biography that to date has been
translated into 43 languages. Other best-selling
titles by Paul are Living Water (Zondervan,
the sermons of Brother Yun) and Project Pearl
(Monarch, the story of how a million Bibles were
foated into China and led to state-sanctioned
Bible printing inside China).
Following Back to Jerusalem, the story of the
exuberant missionary vision of the Chinese
house-church believers, Piquant published From
Head-Hunters to Church Planters, the slim record
of the Christian conversion of the Nagas in
Northeast India. For the launch, Pieter and Elria
travelled to Nagaland with Paul and his family.
Tere they had the unforgettable experience of
meeting some of the intrepid Naga missionar-
ies, as fearless in witness under most challenging
circumstances as their ancestors were in battle!
Te ambitious ‘Fire & Blood’ series is the newest
project of Paul published by Piquant Editions.
Paul describes his aim with this series: “My
intention in this series is not just to present a
dry list of names and dates but to bring alive
the marvellous story of how God has caused
the gospel to take root and fourish in the
world’s most populous country.” All Christian
denominations and traditions are included. Te
extensive frst volume, China’s Book of Martyrs,
amply illustrated in black-and-white, honours
and remembers all those who had shed their
blood to seed a church now estimated at more
than 90 million believers! Te second volume
tells the story of the church in Henan Province,
known among Chinese Christians as the ‘Galilee
of China’ because of the spectacular growth of
the church there. It also serves as an informative
and inspiring guide to the complex landscape
of the Christian Church in China and urgently
reminds us to continue in prayer for and support
of our Chinese brothers and sisters: despite its
explosive growth, the church still represents just
around 7% of China’s total population.
2
“Those martyrs ... are like Abel, of whom it is written ‘By faith he still speaks, even though he is dead’
(Heb 11:4).”
“Rather than following our example of thanking God for the privilege of not suffering for him, they
thanked God for the honour of suffering for his sake (Acts 5:41).”
“I was once asked to identify the dominant characteristic of the Christians of Henan. I thought about
the horrifc persecution they have endured, but realized that that was just one part of their story. Then
I thought about the remarkable miracles that are such a feature of their lives, but again that was just
a part of their story. As I refected on the time I have spent in the province and the many unforgettable
times of fellowship I have shared with its Christians, it suddenly dawned on me that their outstanding
characterstic is love …. They love Jesus Christ, they love people, they love their persecutors, they
love China. And they have loved me.”

A multi-volume work that documents the advance of Christianity in China from earliest beginnings to

version of 50 profles without notes or references.

This frst ever profle of ALL the people
groups of China lists ethnological,
linguistic, geographical, historical and
Christian data. It has been a particularly
strategic resource for missions planning
over the last decade. As an example,
by Christmas 2008 there were 227
believers and several growing churches
among the Baima people of China, who
had zero believers among their 10,000
population when they were frst profled
in Operation China in 1999!
More than 100 years ago, the follow-
ing conversation took place between
Hudson Taylor and Ni Yong-fa, the newly
converted leader of a Buddhist sect.
“How long has this gospel been known
in England?” Ni asked. “For hundreds of
years,” Taylor answered. “What!” Ni ex-
claimed, “and you have only now come
to preach it to us. My father sought
after the truth for many years and died
without fnding it. Why did you not come
sooner?” Sadly, hundreds of millions
of Buddhists continue to live and die
without any exposure to the gospel. This
prayer guide profles 238 people groups,
intertwined with specialist information,
stories and personal testimonies.

“An inspirational account of how God can transform an entire na-
tion. This challenges each one of us personally about our expecta-
tions and spiritual vision. It also draws attention to the continuing
plight of the Nagas.”
“Chinese church leaders believe the gospel came to them from the
West, having spread from Jerusalem. Now there is a burning pas-
sion to see the gospel’s further spread west and south, through the
great unreached areas of the world, full-circle back to Jerusalem.
It’s the dynamic vision of a dynamic church and could be the great-
est missionary force in our world in the coming decades. This is
essential reading!”
“The story of Brother Yun’s persecution and imprisonment is heart-
rending. It’s a profound challenge to each of us to take up the cross
and follow Jesus.”
“It’s impossible to read this book with dry eyes. It will form a water-
shed in your spiritual life. It’s Acts in our time! Not the three P’s of
pastoral maintenance, programmes and politics, but of passion for
Jesus, persecution and the power of the Holy Spirit.”

leaders are deeply appreciative of Hudson Taylor’s contribution in laying
the foundation for the phenomenal events taking place in China today.”

Seafarers
A Strategic Missionary Vision
Church on the Oceans
A Missionary Vision for the 21st Century
“Seafarers are often lonely and don’t always have the possibility
to leave their ship. Different nationalities frequently work together
on board which leads to diffculties in communication. This special
kind of loneliness makes them much more willing to read the Bible
or watch the Jesus flm than they would be if they were at home.
For Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus from fundamentalist countries,
there is no better opportunity to accept the gospel than on a ship.”
“Seafarers: I never even knew about such a world, such a call,
until Martin Otto opened the door. He opened up a fascinating
world, an exotic world, and a tragic world.”
“Martin takes a forgotten people and put them squarely in your

To develop his innovative and highly effective teaching method, John Dobson has applied the latest
research fndings on how adults learn. Instead of starting off by teaching tables of grammar, Dobson
raises his students’ motivation by helping them read ‘real-life’ Scripture texts from the frst lesson. All
senses are employed in learning: Dobson’s own lessons were always highly interactive. Each book is
a complete student textbook as well as comprehensive resource for teachers, including reading and
translation exercises, word-searches, activities, a reference grammar and Scripture index, and audio
CD. It complements the more traditional, grammar-based courses excellently. In addition, the text can
easily be followed by those with English as a second language.
“I am indebted to Mr Dobson more than any other teacher. His books and courses revolutionised my
learning of Biblical languages. I’ve bought many copies of them, both for myself and to give away.”
“Reverend Dobson’s idea was for you to learn Greek by reading, translating, understanding simple
Greek sentences. Hundreds of cleverly constructed, short Greek sentences make this a natural, fun,
fast-paced, and rewarding way to get started.”
“This is a very good frst Greek book. It introduces grammar slowly (but thoroughly) and gets you
doing LOTS of translation.”

“These ideas about leadership (particularly the analysis
of front- and backstage performance) have transformed
my self-awareness. This is a must-read for every person
who wants to understand the drivers behind their own
and others’ leadership styles, and then wants a way to
be set free from compelling and destructive habits.”
“Most people work within some form of corporate
structure. The destructive effects when power is
misused in the workplace is well documented. Simon
Walker compares and contrasts the eight most common
power strategies. He encouraged me to step out and
experiment with new strategies, even to use weakness
as a power strategy! That is particularly challenging.”
“Political leaders will do well to read Walker’s analysis
of the current global situation and its roots in history. In
the face of potentially massive further shifts of power to
destabilize society, he urges leaders to take the lead in
adopting practical strategies for a hopeful future.”

In November 1999, Piquant was launched with
the publication of Anneke Kaai’s Te Psalms: An
Artist’s Impression. Several of her paintings from
that series are now well-recognized in churches
around the world through their devotional use.
Anneke trained as a traditional painter at the
Gooise Academie in the Netherlands before
she attended the Gerrit Rietveld Institute for
Fine Art in Amsterdam at the end of the sixties.
Tere she was challenged to work in a new and
contemporary way using contemporary materials.
She was struck by the expressive visual power
of works by artists like Jackson Pollock; at the
same time, she was disturbed by the ‘cursing’
content of much of that art. It became her
particular quest to paint equally expressive works,
but to communicate her faith in God, based
on biblical truth and revelation. She immerses
herself in series of paintings on a theme to
portray the multifaceted, and often apparently
contradictory, nature of biblical truth. Tree
Piquant books that portray her series to date
include In a Word (the series on ‘Bible words’
with short meditations by Eugene H Peterson),
From Beginning to End (which combines series on
Creation and the Apocalypse with the series on
the Ten Commandments and the Apostles’ Creed)
and Seeing a New Song (which combines the 25
paintings on the Psalms with 20 paintings on
‘relating to God’).
Anneke’s newest publication, She shall be called
WOMAN, presents 30 portraits of biblical
women—some are presented in a more
traditional, fgurative way, whereas others are
more abstract; some are painted using acrylics
on Plexiglas, whereas others have added texture
through mixed media; some show a single profle,
whereas others are portrayed in simultaneous
multiple views. Alongside the paintings are
short meditations from the writings of Dr Mary
Mikhael, the President of the Near-East School
of Teology in Beirut and a writer and regular
speaker at Presbyterian women’s conferences in
the USA.
14
“Readers will glimpse how these women
experienced the struggles, fears,
challenges and joys they faced—and,
particularly, how their faith in God, or the
absence of it, shaped their actions, for
good or evil, with results that rippled out
long after their earthly lives had ended.”

“Word and image go together in any pursuit
of understanding in the Christian faith. Our
fundamental Word, after all, became incarnate,
visible and tactile, in Jesus… And so artists
have always held a prominent place in bringing

personally present to us. Especially when a word
goes fat through repetition and familiarity, image
becomes critical for bringing the imagination

“God, I am waiting for you.
A long time since we had a conversation.
I am waiting for you, and it is like
Waiting on a bench at the railway station
For an old friend, out of contact these long years,
Coming to meet me on the down train.
So how do you feel, God, about me looking you up
after all these years?”

“It is a wonderful thought that this man’s rare wisdom, which so radically changed the lives of those
who knew him, can now fnd its way to a wider audience.”
“We can marvel at the way Rookmaker combined the diverse resources of Christian witness,
Calvinistic philosophy, art-historical expertise, and musical connoissership to create a seamless and
challenging account of modern cultural history.”
“I am delighted that Piquant are exhibiting such a sense of responsibility, particularly to the next
generation, and showing courage in publishing the collected works of Hans Rookmaaker.”
“A man who knew, who really knew what it is to walk that straight and narrow way, and while doing so
gave us a great example of how to walk it in moral and aesthetic freedom while also enjoying it!”
“Dr Rookmaaker often made the point that when we stop talking
about an artist, that artist dies. These collected works bring
together, for the frst time, the range of Rookmaaker’s thinking
on the arts and culture: our conversation with him is alive and
well. Like all human endeavour, these volumes are rooted in
a particular place and time. However, you will fnd much more
than you expect which is of real, continuing importance in
shaping a Christian response to our time and place.”
“As a cultural analyst, Rookmaker anticipated the postmodern
erasure of the split between high and low culture and pointed
out guidelines for a meaningful involvement in both. He embodied the Christian calling to engage in a
fruitful and wise way in the culture of the present day.”
In Volume 6, a full-blown biography by Laurel Gasque “captures the person behind the writings and
lectures: a man of many contrasts—provocative and gentle, rough-hewn and refned, playful yet
profoundly serious, reserved, yet close to many.”

“Seerveld’s ‘Bearing Fresh Olive Leaves’ is written
our of a passionate concern about the isolation of the
Christian artist and out of a desire to stir the vision
of the wider Christian community to make space for
the artists in their midst. As his own ‘olive branch’,
Seerveld extends his practical wisdom on how to move
forward.”
“Seerveld emphasizes the normality of art in God’s
world . . . [this] book breathes with his sense of
urgency and optimism.”
“How can Christian artists remain inspired amidst the
huge struggles they face today? Seerveld affrms that
art is part of God’s good creation, that there is a proper
place and time for playful, allusive works of art.”
“The sheer creativity, panache, godly wisdom and
humour of Seerveld, and the breathtaking scope of his
knowledge and interests, are clearly shown in these
diverse articles and lectures of ‘In the Fields’—with
topics as diverse as: How to read the Bible at home as
a family; Glory to God or Christmas?; Philosophising
beauty; Cultural objectives for the Christian teacher;
The meaning of silence for daily life and Sunday
worship; Comic relief to Christian art; and, yes, Mini-
lecture on toilet paper! ”
As Seerveld says, “The cultural objective of Christ-
followers is to re-form out of the grip of sin, to be used
by the Holy Spirit to transform what generations of
faithless people have made tradition, to transform such
thought and practice or whatever it be until it is con-
formed to Jesus Christ’s lordship.”
With an opening introduction to the thought of Seerveld
by Craig Bartholomew and Gideon Strauss.

“Faith, according to Scripture, is the ‘substance of
things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen’
(Hebrews 11:1). Images of faith are then a kind of
oxymoron that has been a conundrum to the Church
for centuries. What happens when the substance
of things seen attempts to express the ‘substance
of things hoped for’? Why is it that so much of the
imagery used to express Christian faith can be
considered kitsch? Why is such profound meaning
visualized in such weak ways?”
Betty Spackman
“If Spackman’s work accomplishes anything it will
be to encourage Christians to become more visually
literate in the culture around them. To think critically,
in a constructive way, about the images we adopt
and claim for our own. Those prone to ridicule will be
encouraged to step down from the seat of judgment
and examine the meaning and motives behind
objects of kitsch. Those who love to showcase their
faith through kitsch may be challenged to look at their
motivations for doing so.”
