Christmas 2009 was not the norm for Saria and her two sisters, Elizabeth and Gabriella. Saria was ill for several days which led to a stay in the hospital followed by many tests and at age 2 ½, Saria Brooks was diagnosed with Leukemia. Saria and her family now face weekly trips (for a minimum of 2 years, sometimes more than once a week) to Devos Children’s Hospital for chemotherapy. The Family (Mathew and Crystal Brooks) are in need of your help to cover medical bills, transportation, repairs to their home and monthly expenses to ensure they are able to give Saria the care she needs to overcome this disease. Saria’s long term prognosis is good; however, the expenses are creating a great burden for the family. Our hope is that we as a community can help her enjoy her childhood years by lightening the financial burden. The Newaygo United Methodist Church will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner Benefit and Bake Sale to raise funds for the Brooks Family. The Benefit will be on May 07, 2010, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Newaygo United Methodist Church. We are the church with the red doors located at 101 State Road (M-37) in downtown Newaygo. We invite you to attend the Spaghetti Dinner and Bake Sale to help support Saria and her family. Cash donations can also be made to the “Saria Brooks Donation Account” at any Independent Bank.

The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) is comprised of more than 200 basketball teams across 22 conferences and seven divisions. The NWBA, founded in 1948, today consists of men’s, women’s, intercollegiate, and youth teams throughout the U.S. and Canada. In the pursuit of excellence, the NWBA provides qualified individuals with physical disabilities the opportunity to play, learn and compete in the sport of wheelchair basketball. Codey Minard of Pierson is one of eight players from the local team Grand Rapids Junior Pacers. Minard and his team are part of the prep division. Over the past season they have played more than 20 games from Fort Wayne, Ind., to Denver. Out of all those games and miles traveled, the Junior Pacers lost only four games. The team has earned three secondplace and four first-place tournament finishes. The most recent event was the national tournament in Denver. Minard and his team arrived back home on April 11, with the second place trophy. Congratulations to Codey and his team for bringing it on all season.

CROP/HUNGER Walk planning meeting set for April 29

IT’S FOR THE BIRDS!!!

A planning meeting for this year’s CROP/HUNGER Walk is scheduled for April 29 at 7:00 at Heritage United Methodist Church. The walk has become an annual event in the Panhandle region of Montcalm County. The walk is a fund raising event that is organized by volunteers and supported by several local churches. CROP, which stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, is sponsored by Church World Services. This is a cooperative organization of over 35 denominations across the country. The goal of the CROP Walk is to raise money to help feed the hungry. Participants get pledges for donations and then walk to show their commitment to the cause. Last year’s walk was the most successful yet. Over 100 participants walked a 4.5 mile course around Howard City, and raised more than $6,500. Of this amount, over $1,600 was retained in the community and donated to Helping Hands, our local food pantry. The remainder of the money went to fund a variety of programs nationally and internationally. Church World Services supports programs in some 80 countries to help eradicate hunger. Walk organizers are upbeat about duplicating last year’s success. They stress however that this is a community event and that community support is essential. Volunteers are needed. Any one interested in becoming involved is urges to attend the upcoming meeting at Heritage United Methodist Church. Representatives from area churches are especially urged to attend.

Team work is what made this project a success. Thanks to Max Gondre who graciously made the fantastic bird houses, the Village of Howard City that suggested the project to the scouts and the Cub Scouts (#3073) that painted the houses. The bird houses will be displayed along the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail in Howard City. The scouts had a good time painting and were proud to have been given the honor of being a part of an event that will benefit not only the community but the birds.

WAY TO GO: Codey Minard is seen with trophies he’s earned playing basketball.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Howard City Lions Club will hold free vision screening for children between the ages of 1 through 5 years old. The free screening will take place at the Panhandle Area Community Expo on April 30th at the Tri County High School. Why free vision screening for children? 1 in 20 children suffer from amblyopia (“lazy eye”). Amblyopia is the leading cause of blindness in children. It is preventable and more easily treated if detected early. For your child to participate in the screening, you must complete and return a consent form. Forms are available at the following locations: The Village of Howard City Offices, Reynolds Township Offices, Timothy C. Hauenstein Reynolds Township Library, or call (231) 937-5686. The Lions Club will also be having their White Cane Campaign at Leppink’s of Howard City on Friday, April 30, from 9 am - 4:30 p.m. Donations help provide assistance for the sight and hearing impaired in the Howard City area.

WINNING: Tammy Williams is pictured holding a custom, painted guitar by local artist Roy Bills. Tammy won the autographed portrait of Billy Ray Cyrus at the Tri County Spring Concert. Congratulations Tammy!!

‘Braunschweiger Blues’ concert at the Dogwood Center
The popular local band “Braunschweiger Blues Band” will be performing at the Dogwood Center for Performing Arts on Friday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box. Playing country and good old classic rock and roll with a few surprises thrown in,

this band creates a fun and entertaining experience for the audience. A little Seeger, Skynyrd, Stones and much more ... all the great tunes you love to dance to and sing along with! Band members include: John Chandonnet on drums and vocals; Todd Juengel on guitar, keyboard and vocals; Wade Perkins on horns, keyboard and vocals; Randy Seabolt on bass and vocals; Doug Harmon on guitar and vocals; and “Cousin Richie” on vocals and sound technician. Several years ago Harmon formed a family trio with his kids Lola and Drew, first with Drew on guitar and Lola on bass and then with Drew on drums. After playing shows opening

for artists such as the Lovin’ Spoonful, Herman’s Hermits and Frankie Valli the group wanted a bigger sound and turned to some very talented musician friends and the band took on a much larger overall sound. The Braunschweiger Blues Band performance is sponsored by Ace Hardware - Fremont, Hendon & Slate PC, and Harmon, Inc. Call or visit the Dogwood Box Office soon to get your ticket to this fun event! The Dogwood Center is located one mile east of downtown Fremont. The Box Office is open Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and one hour prior to an event. For information, phone 231.924.8885

Amacher, Cook to wed; invite friends, family Couturier earns national recognition
Jacob Couturier probably never imagined how much he would accomplish when he started wrestling for the Grant Wrestling Club four years ago. The 10-year-old son of Robert and Tina Couturier of Sand Lake received All-American status by virtue of his second-place finish in the NUWAY nationals tournament on April 17 in Battle Creek. Jacob, representing Michigan and Grant was among elite wrestlers from 11 different states that traveled from as far as Florida. Jacob was coached by his brother, Kevin, a sophomore at Grant High School. Competing along with 900 other wrestlers Jacob finished 3-2 against wrestlers from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana to earn second place. During the 2010 regular season, Jacob captured six first places, three second places and one third place. He was third in the 99/00 age bracket at 51 pounds at the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association finals in Battle Creek at the end of March. His showing at state, which featured more than 2,500 wrestlers from Michigan, qualified him for the NUWAY nationals. Jacob’s family and members of the Grant Wrestling Club all congratulate him on a tremendous season. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Amacher of Howard City, together with Mr. Richard Cook of Sand Lake and Mrs. Rose Barnum of Cedar Springs, announce the wedding of their children, Courtney Amacher and U.S. Marine P.F.C. Leo Cook. The wedding will be held May 7, 2010, at Pine Grove Community Church. The couple are both 2008 graduates of Tri County Schools. Leo is based at the Marine base in North Carolina and Courtney is attending Montcalm Community College. The couple and their families wish to invite friends and family to help celebrate with them. The service will be held at 7 p.m. and the reception will follow in the Family Life Center. If you are unable to attend, please hold the couple up in prayer as they start their life together.

Spectrum Health United Memorial receives LIVE United Award
GREENVILLE — Spectrum Health United Memorial was honored with United Way’s LIVE United award to honor their successful 2009 campaign efforts. Spectrum Health United Memorial was one of only five companies in Montcalm and Ionia counties that were presented with this award on March 22nd at the United Way campaign celebration at Belding High School. “The LIVE United award is presented to companies that have a strong campaign,” said Denise Hubbard, United Way Program Director for Montcalm and Ionia counties. “We look for solid leadership, participation, and companies that go above and beyond in their campaigning efforts.” More than 200 employees, along with generous donations from Spectrum Health United Memorial and their physicians group, contributed a total of $28,240 to the 2009 campaign. Doug Bitler, BSMT (ASCP), Lab Manager and Manager of Courier Services for Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital served as the campaign coordinator for this year’s United Way drive. “Our goal was to beat last year’s total and we did so by almost $7,000,” said Bitler. “This money will help more than 14,000 residents in Montcalm County that United Way serves in some capacity.” Jean days, which gave many employees the oppor-

HomeTown students guests of Lakeview Seniors
Transition students from HomeTown Lakeview will be demonstrating some of their training experiences to the Lakeview Area Seniors on Tuesday, May 4th. These students are part of the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District’s vocational training program for young adults with disabilities. The students will demonstrate how they develop work skills by making paper for greeting cards. They will also assist the seniors in making a “spring” card. Lakeview Area Seniors is a nondenominational group gathering on the first Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00. The purpose of the group is to provide meaningful information and education in addition to opportunity for socialization. Interested people of all ages are encouraged to attend. If you would like more information about the Lakeview Area Seniors contact Gary Wakenhut at 989-352-6996.

tunity to wear jeans with a $3 donation towards the United Way campaign, and educating employees on the focus of United Way’s purpose helped to raise the funds from early October through mid November in 2009. “I showed Power Point presentations at management and department meetings that explained to employees how their donations would be used,” said Bitler. “A lot of people didn’t realize the positive impact that United Way makes on our communities. We worked extra hard this year getting the word out.” “Spectrum Health United Memorial contributions increased by 29% in 2009,” said Hubbard. “Considering the state of the economy, that is significant. Spectrum Health United Memorial’s donations have been consistently increasing over the past several years. This has made a big difference in our campaigns.” A total of $350,185 was raised in the 2009 campaign to be used and distributed in 2010. All the money raised for United Way of Montcalm and Ionia counties help fund 33 non-profit agencies that meet the criteria within these counties.

All States were required to create a special education state performance plan (SPP) identifying those areas that any particular state needed to address with regard to federal special education compliance. When the state identifies noncompliance, it must provide notification to the local district. Tri County Area School district received notification of noncompliance on April 15, 2009 in (2) areas: State Performance Plan Indicator B11: Child Find as well as State Performance Plan Indicator B12: Early Childhood Transition. The noncompliance determination was based on Tri County Area School district’s 2007-2008 data submission in the Single Record Student Database, one of Michigan’s student data tracking systems. It is important to understand that all local school districts in our county were found to have similar compliance issues, as well as many other local districts across the state. Upon receiving the notification of noncompliance, Tri County Area Schools took immediate action. Our special education staff participated in meetings to gain a better understanding of those components of our noncompliance. The district also made the decision to centralize data submission into the state data system in an effort to decrease possible data submission errors. Through much hard work from all of our special education staff, building secretaries, and Sherry Wheeler at the central office, the State has verified as of April 14, 2010 that Tri County Area School district completed its corrective action plan activities for our areas of noncompliance and is Back row (l to r): Nina Bohm, Darcy Engelman, Dana Ballivian, Coach Brianna Ebenstein, Valeriya now at 100 percent compliance based on review of the 2008-2009 data. Finances. The hot topic at many school district meetings. How will schools keep afloat during tough economic times? Eighty percent of school districts in Michigan will have to cut staff and consider closing school buildings to make budget for the upcoming school year. Tri County is one of them. At the April 12 school board meeting the school board members had to decide on one of three proposals. The first two involved closing Edgerton Upper Elementary. This would save the district $324,000. The decision was made for proposal three, to keep Edgerton open. However, all proposals involved a reduction in teaching staff — approximately seven at the high school, five at the middle school, and ten at the elementary level — 22 in all. The cuts would also involve: six parapros, three custodians, two nurses, and the liaison officer. The athletic and transportation budget would be cut. Administrators and other non-union employees conceded on pay and insurance cuts, saving the district $201,000. The board voted to offer an early retirement incentive to teachers, with the idea of cutting less teaching staff. Teaching staff and parents came forward at the meeting to share their views, most in favor of the third proposal. All day kindergarten verses alternative day kindergarten was discussed. Alternative day kindergarten would cut 3.5 elementary teachers. The board also discussed other cost saving considerations such as; conserving energy, consolidating services with other school districts, reducing counseling staff, secretaries, and administration. The high school is pleased to announce the top ten ranked students for the Class of 2010. Elena Smith has been named valedictorian with a 4.11 grade point average. Elena is the daughter of Mary Ann and Howard Wilson and Terence Smith. Elena will attend Michigan State University in the pre-dental program. Alaina Swaney has been named salutatorian. Doug and Renee Swaney are her parents. Alaina plans to study psychology at Cornerstone University. Achieving high academic honors and filling the top ten are: Allison Petriella, daughter of Tony and Melissa Petriella. Allison will enter Grand Rapids Community College to study music and psychology. Whitney Luke, daughter of Dana and Bill Luke, has plans to attend the University of Michigan. Benjamin Parkhurst, son of Jim and Julie Parkhurst, will enter Western Michigan University to obtain a degree in Engineering. Alexis Helbert, daughter of Jon and Tina Helbert, is enrolled in Full Sail University’s art program. Kathryn Stroud, daughter of Robert and Terri Stroud. Katie will attend Emerson College to pursue a liberal arts degree. EdeeMae Thompson, daughter of Frank and Deb Thompson, will study pre-veterinary medicine at Grand Valley State University. Mary Bradley, daughter of George and Linda Bradley, plans to study Biology at Hope College. Rebekah Simon, daughter of Ronald Simon, will enter the secondary education program to study mathematics at Grand Valley State University. Sand Lake Elementary fourth grader, Oksana Parmenter, and her basketball team placed second in Nationals in wheelchair basketball in Colorado. Oksana proudly wears her medal around her neck. She’s been playing basketball for three years at the YMCA in Grand Rapids. Every year her team has gone to Nationals. There are seven players on her team and Oksana said she is grateful and excited by all the support the fans have given her team. Bill and Jan Parmenter of Pierson adopted Oksana from Lithuania. Spinabifida has left her wheelchair bound, but that hasn’t stopped this eleven year-old. Congratulations Oksana! Keep up the good work.
By Julie Kremers

April 26, 2010

On April 1, Ms. Kremers’ geography classes celebrated Canada Day. Canada Day is usually celebrated on July 1 throughout Canada as well as internationally. It is a day to celebrate the anniversary of the first of July 1867 enactment of the British North America Act, which united two British colonies and a province of the British Empire into a single country called Canada. We celebrated this day as a culmination of our study on Canada. The students enjoyed listening to music sung by the Canadian artists Justin Bieber and Shania Twain. Many of the kids had the opportunity to play Pictionary using Canadian facts that were studied in class. Some students even made totem poles representative of the First Nations people of Canada. The event was topped off by enjoying many Canadian food dishes such as macaroni and cheese with ketchup, banana cake, hot artichoke dip, vegetable pizza, beef burgundy meatballs, garlic mashed potatoes, butter tarts, apple pie, and Nanaimo bars just to name to a few. I would like to extend a BIG thank you to all of the parents that sent in food to make our celebration extra special and to the students and staff members that helped make this day memorable.

Students and staff were glad to see teacher Kim Thomsen as she made her first visit to the school after a car accident in January. The school held an assembly on March 25, honoring Kim and letting her know how much she is missed. The accident happened on January 26 as she was driving to school in the morning. Bad road conditions caused her vehicle to leave the road, trapping her inside. Kim has made great strides in regaining her strength while keeping a positive attitude.

Pictured are the top ten students of the Class of 2010 (left to right): Alexis Helbert, Elena Smith, Katie Stroud, Alaina Swaney, EdeeMae Thompson, Allison Petriella, Mary Bradley, Whitney Luke, Rebekah Simon, and Ben Parkhurst.

The Budwig Cancer Diet
For the last 40 years a German Doctor, Johanna Budwig, has been studying the effects of diet and sunlight for the treatment of cancer. She has been nominated six times for the Nobel Prize in Medicine. The key point of her work is that cancer cells are really weak. We typically think of cancer as strong and overwhelming. But Dr. Budwig’s work shows that cancer cells cannot survive well in the presence of oxygen. This has been confirmed by numerous other studies. So if we can oxygenate the cancerous tissues they will die. Dr. Budwig found a way to increase the oxygen in all cells. The basic formula is very simple. All of our body’s cell membranes are made up of lipo-proteins. These are a combination of fats and proteins. The quality of the fats that make up these lipo-proteins determine how much oxygen can be transported into the cell through the cell membrane. If these fats come from trans fats or saturated fats, they cannot transport oxygen very well. Cells need highly unsaturated fats and the best sources of these are seed oils like flax seed oil. These oils unfortunately are very unstable and become rancid very easily. If you grind flax seed, it needs to be used within one hour. If there are any liver or gall bladder issues it is hard to get these good oils absorbed and into the cell membrane where they can transport oxygen. Dr. Budwig discovered that mixing the flaxseed oil with the protein from low fat cottage cheese, before eating it, solved both problems. The protein will bind with the flaxseed oil to make a stable, water soluble lipo-protein which does not become rancid quickly and is easily absorbed and assimilated into the cell membrane. Using this daily will greatly increase cellular oxygenation and cancer cells will not be able to survive. For prevention use one tablespoon of good flaxseed oil in one quarter cup of organic low fat cottage cheese or yogurt daily. Fresh fruit or organic honey can be added for taste. For treatment make up four tablespoons of flax seed oil per one or two cups of cottage cheese and eat some of that four times per day. You must avoid all trans fats and deep fried food. Google the Budwig Cancer Diet for many references and more details on this program. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
