So that you know how much you can drink and what happens when you do. What does fermented mean? It means that the drink has been turned into alcohol What are some of the different forms of alcohol? An antiseptic or a Sedative Where is alcohol absorbed once ingested? Their bloodstream What parts of the human body is affected most? The central nervous system What is meant by ´Alcohol is a depressantµ«? It slows the brain function Intoxication happens when alcohol is consumed in large amounts. What are some of the affects of intoxication? They may stagger loose coordination and slur their speech Compare the Image of a 15 year old brain to the right of the page«why is the brain less active when alcohol is consumed? It is slowed in thinking so it is not as active What happens to the body when alcohol poisoning occurs? The body is poisoned and the body may vomit, become unconscious, have difficulty breathing, or become sleepy There are a number of reasons why teens drink. What do you think is the number one reason? They think that they are cool when they do it.

When reading about some of the downsides to drinking when you are underage, what did the University of Washington find out? Teens become overweight and have high blood pressure. What is your perspective on how you can avoid drinking? I can stay away from alcohol What quality does it take to not become a problem drinker? A high self esteem Write a paragraph on this critical thinking question«If you know of someone who you believe has a problem with drinking, what would you do or say to them? I would say to stop drinking and that it is not good for you or your health. That it does not help you at all because it just makes you feel horrible and depressed.

Click onto Binge Drinking in the section titled MORE ON THIS TOPIC  Why was Chet concerned about his friend Dave? He was drinking and becoming a totally different person.  In what ways has the term Binge Drinking changed over time? Why? It has changed from drinking for several days to consuming a large amount of alcohol over a short amount of time. It has changed because people drink more now.  What do you think is the main reason teens Binge Drink?· To make themselves feel better, to have fun, and to make themselves look cool.  What are some of the more serious and longer-lasting risks of Binge Drinking? It can affect your day to day life and cause you to be hung over.  What is the most life-threatening consequence of Binge Drinking? Death  What is meant by impaired judgment? You don·t think straight and you judge things differently then you normally would  What are some of the issues associated with the Physical and Mental Health of one why binge drinks? Extreme confusion, vomiting, seizures, low body temperature, inability to be awakened.  How do Binge Drinkers affect non-drinkers? They don·t work well with them.  What is the best approach to take if you know of someone who is a Binge Drinker? To talk to someone who you trust and get help from them. (Click onto the word alcoholic«) A person who is physically and emotionally addicted to alcohol.  What is the difference between a problem drinker and a social drinker? A problem drinker is a drinker who causes problems and is severely affected by alcohol while a social drinker is someone who drinks to have fun.  How can a person identify the disease of alcoholism? They can identify it from changes in peoples behavior and want to drink alcohol  How does alcoholism change the function of a family unit? Alcoholism can cause people to become angry and cause arguments and split up families.

What can be done to help a parent see the realities of their alcoholism? If they get help from a professional or if someone talks to them that they trust and convinces them that they do have a problem. The next section on Why Do I Feel So Bad will be beneficial when connecting to our literature autobiography selection to read during this unit«be sure to read it entirely and make notes to refer to during our reading. o You might be subjected to a parent·s changing moods« and you will have difficulty with your parent because they will be changing so much and so often that it will be difficult to understand them o It may be hard to do things with friends or other people« You don·t know what your parent will do if they will be drunk or not. o You might be stressed or worried« You are afraid that your parents will be mean or that they might die from drunk driving. You could become stressed from having to be the grown up and the one who takes care of everything. List the areas that a person can do if they have an alcoholic parent« Acknowledge the problem, be informed, be aware of your emotions, learn healthy coping strategies, find support, find a safe environment, stop the cycle. When a person is an alcoholic they want to keep it a secret. Why do you think this is normally the case when dealing with alcoholism? They know that alcoholism is bad and they don·t want to be judged by anyone or hurt from it. They don·t want people to be worried about them and they just want to be left alone.
