Social Function
Procedure text is a text that is designed to describe how something is
achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people
perform different processes in a sequence of steps. This text uses simple
present tense, often imperative sentences. It also uses the temporal
conjunction such as first, second, then, next, finally, etc.

Example
Making Paper from Woodchips
A general statement
Woodchipping is a process used to obtain pulp and paper products from
forest trees. The woodchipping process begins when the trees are cut down in a
selected area of the forest called a coupe.
A sequenced explanation of why or how something occurs
Next the tops and branches of the trees are cut out and then the logs are
taken to the mill. At the mill the bark of the logs is removed and the logs are
taken to a chipper which cuts them into small pieces called woodchips. The
woodchips are then screened to remove dirt and other impurities.At this stage
they are either exported in this form or changed into pulp by chemicals and heat.
The pulp is then bleached and the water content is removed.
Closing
Finally the pulp is rolled out to make paper.

Abstract
How Would you like to find a snake in your bat? A nasty one tool.
Orientation
We had just moved to a new house, which had been empty for so
long that everything was in a terrible mess. Anna and I decided we would
clean the bath first, so we set to and hurried on the tap.
Crisis
Suddenly to my horror, a snakes head appeared in the plug-hole.
Then out slithered the rest of his long thin body. He twisted and turned on
slippery bottom of the bath, splittering and histing at us.
Incident
For an instant I stood there paralyzed Bottom then I yelled for my
husband, who luckily came running and killed the snake with handle of a
broom. Anna, who was only there at the time, was quiet interested in
whole business. Indeed I had to pull her out of the way shed probably
have leantover the bath to get a better look!
Coda
We found out later that it was a black mamba. A poisionous kind a
snake. It had obviously been fast asleep, curried up at the bottom of the
nice warm water pipe. It must have had an awful shock when the cold
came trickling down. But nothing to the shock I got. Ever since then Ive
always put the plug in firmly before running the bath water.

Orientation
Once a man was walking in the park when a pinguin crossed.
Event 1
He took him to a policeman and said, I have just found this penguin.
What should I do? The policeman replied, Take him to the zoo.
Event 2
The next day the policeman saw the same man in the same park and the
man was still carrying the penguin with him. The policeman was rather surprised
and walked up to the man an d asked, Why are you still carrying the penguin
about? Didnt you take it to the zoo? I certainly did, replied the man.
Twist
And it was a great idea because he really enjoyed it, so today I am taking
him to the movies.
Hortatory Exposition

To persuade the reader or listener that something should or should be the
case

a. Focus on neric human and non-human participants, except for
speaker or writer, referring to self.
b. Use of mental process to state what writer thinks or feels about
issue. (e.g. appreciate, feel, realize)
c. Use of material processes : to state what happens (e.g. is polluting,
drive, travel, spend,shoult, be treated)
d. Use of relational processes : to state what is or should be ( e.g.
Those who want to penalize older, leaded patrol vehicles and their
owners doesnt seem to appreciate that, in the country, there is no public
transport to fall back upon and ones own vehicle is the only way to get
about.
Recommendation
I feel that country people, who often have to travel hude distances
to the nearest town and who already spend a great deal of money of
petrol, should be treated differently to the people who live in the city.
