Bonns charm is hard to miss: It is a beautiful, historic city

that offers a vibrant and engaging environment in which
to live, work, and study. Founded by the Romans, the city
has continued to develop a rich cultural heritage. Among
other things, it is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven
and host to its own opera house, several theaters, concert
halls, and a wide range of museums. As the former capital
and todays UN city Bonn is also a very international city
welcoming people from all over the world in the heart of
Germany.

Program Elements
Renewable Energy: Policy and Development
Climate change, environmental degradation, and the
increasing scarcity of resources are major challenges that
humans face today. In light of the Fukushima catastrophe
in 2011 and the post-2015 development agenda, energy
security and alternative energy production are major topics
of discussion worldwide. Germany plays a leading role in
this field and strongly endorses the transition from nuclear
and fossil energy to renewable resources such as biomass,
solar, or wind power. However, due to the multitude of groups
and special interests involved, this transition also faces
significant political, economic and technological challenges.
The Summer School at the University of Bonn introduces students to the numerous aspects and debates on
renewable energy sources as a response to todays climate
and energy problems.

The Summer School

The University of Bonn invites highly motivated international
undergraduates from various academic backgrounds
to this interdisciplinary program to debate policies and
developments in the field of renewable energy. The summer
school gives students an insight into current discussions,
research and policy efforts on global and local levels, with a
special focus on conflicts associated with the topic. Through
intensive seminars, individual projects and guest lectures
by experts from academia, politics, and international
organizations students will critically assess the potential and
challenges of renewable energy. The interactive exchange
with experts from diverse fields also provides students with
a glimpse into possible career paths.

The course Energy Policy: Global Decisions, Local Actors

explores policies in the area of sustainable development, with
a special focus on the energy factor. Through a broad
perspective students will be introduced to global policies
and actors. To illustrate the EUs approach, the students
will visit the European Commission in Brussels. During the
last week in Bonn, the focus shifts to German efforts in the
field of renewables and to concrete examples of local action.
Students put what they have learned to use in a simulation,
a presentation, and in their final papers.
Guest lectures and excursions to NGOs, research institutions, such as the Jlich National Research Center, and renewable energy sites will deepen the students policy knowledge and cover the political, economic and technological
aspects of the topic.
Students will work in small independent groups on energyrelated projects, guided by scientists and professionals
from the respective fields.

Credits
Upon successful completion of the program, the University of
Bonn recommends that partner institutions award participants
with 6 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System).

Admission Requirements
We welcome highly motivated undergraduate students from
diverse fields such as political science, sociology, education,
environmental and sustainability studies, engineering, botany,
geology, chemistry, meteorology, physics, pre-law, business,
economics, journalism and public policy. Students should have
already completed at least one year of study. Knowledge of
German is not required.
