Event Ad
Description:

Through Microsoft Word, I created a full-color bled ad that advertises for the
Wilderness Foundation and their upcoming event.

Date:
January 30, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsfot Word
Epson Scanner

PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find, scan and import an image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I used a scanner for the first time to upload my image to Microsoft Word.
There, I played with the image and added boxes with a transparent fill so you
can still see the image but are able to read the text easier. I added a line around
the boxes to make them stand out. I chose two fonts. One for the body test
and another for the title and quote on the ad. I was surprised at how much
is hidden in Microsoft Word and I am glad I was able to learn more about
the program. The programs I used were: Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner,
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter).

Montage
Description:

I was asked to use Adobe PhotoShop to create an inspirational montage. I was
directed to blend two or more images together and to utilize my typography
skills.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe PhotoShop

Objectives:

Learn to manage PhotoShop layers.
Learn to blend miages together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I cropped the image to 8.5x11. I selected the label image and moved it to the
foregroud image and I made the flowers the background image. I adjusted
the fill and opacity percentage of both the label and the flowers. I added type
and made “God” stand out by making the font size bigger to make it stand out
from the rest of the text.

Imaging
Description:

Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a

Program(s)/Tools:
Nikon Camera

Adobe PhotoShop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.

Process:

I began this project by brainstorming photos I could take and which color scheme I would
incorporate with it. I chose a triadic element. My friend, Natalie (also the model), and
I went to the Idaho Sand Dunes. I took a few nature shots but this is by far my favorite.
I love how easy it looked and how her eyes lined up with the fence and both created
Lead Room for my photograph. I took this photo a designed a 11×8.5 layout in Adobe
PhotoShop. I did simple touch ups on the photo, I messed with the color of the sky, I used
the eye dropper tool and color wheel to pick put my colors. Natalie and I noticed her
necklace had purple in the jewel so I pulled some color from her necklace. I also added
text and boxes at the bottom of my photo. I used tutors, online research, and PhotoShop
tutorial videos to figure out the program and create the project I imagined.

Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process:

I set up the large trifold fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into three sections with
a front and a back side.I used white bars throughout the brochure to create repetition
and flow. I chose to do a travel guide for the Dominican Republic. I included pictures
and information of the places I traveled. For the image of the palm tree I used the ‘quick
selection tool’ in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I then used
the ‘refine edge’ to make the edges more smooth and realistic. I then ‘placed’ the palm
tree into InDesign where I used the ‘text wrap’ option to wrap my text around the ‘alpha
channel’ of the image.

Logos
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:
February 20, 2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create these logos. After I created numerous ideas on paper,
I chose these 3 to make through Illustrator. I took a vote on which was the best. I chose
the one I liked best and which was voted on most to refine. I refined the typography and
played around with adding an arrow to fill the empty space. I used blunt lines throughout
my logo to make it quick and simple looking. I created a fake company geared towards
exploring Northern California, where I am from. I put 1996 as the established year
because that is the year I was born. I chose the third logo.
