The Normal Christian Life

Part 2
The Holy Spirit
Mike Hendon
• It is IMPERATIVE that we KNOW and LIVE our lives
with the personal presence and ministry of the
Holy Spirit!
• “because the love of God has been poured out in
our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to
us.” Ro.5:5
• But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if
indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if
anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is
not His. Ro.8:9
• The ministry of the Holy Spirit is two-fold:
• Outward—manifestations of power
• Inward—indwelling PERSON of the Holy Spirit
38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has

said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living

water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the
Spirit, whom those believing[a] in Him would
receive; for the Holy[b] Spirit was not yet given,
because Jesus was not yet glorified. Jn.7
• The motive and our goal in our walk with the
Lord is found in our ETERNAL PURPOSE. Heb.
2:9-18
• The Holy Spirit is the power and resource to
fulfill that goal. He LIVES IN us!
• Acts 1:8
But you shall receive power when the Holy
Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be
witnesses…
• Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance.
• Tongues is the INITIAL evidence of the Holy
Spirit’s control. For the ‘tongue’ no man can
tame(Ja.3:3-9)
• The idea is to be “filled” with the Holy Spirit:
• “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as
fools but as wise, redeeming the time,
because the days are evil. Therefore do not
be unwise, but understand what the will of
the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in
which is dissipation; but be filled with the
Spirit, speaking…Acts 5:15-19a
• “filled”: controlled by, just as a person is under
the influence of alcohol and is under its
control—so be ‘filled’ with the Holy Spirit—
under His control.
• How do I know I am under His control?
• Besides the obvious outward signs there is a
simple 2 point test as well.
• Or do you not know that your body is the
temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom
you have from God, and you are not your
own? For you were bought at a price;
therefore glorify God in your body[c] and in
your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Cor.6:19-20
• And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Jn
1:14
• GRACE and TRUTH
• Acts 4:33
And with great power the apostles gave witness
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great
grace was upon them all.
• “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed
Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My
disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Jn.8:31-32
• God’s people are people who walk in GRACE:
“for it is God who works in you both to will
and to do for His good pleasure.”
• And they walk in TRUTH: “I have no greater
joy than to hear that my children walk in
truth.” 3 Jn. 1:4
• Truth is not having your doctrinal ‘ducks’ in a
row, it is expressed in your life and manifested
in freedom. Not freedom to do as you please
but to do as you ought…
• Yet grace and truth are in great demand today.
• Which can only lead us to one fact: Many of us
have areas of our lives that we are
withholding from Him.
• This explains frustrated believers and psuedo
Christians who have a ‘form’ of godliness but
‘deny’(refuse to live) the power of God.
• If you have NOT given up your right to yourself
and absolutely abandoned yourself to Christ
then you have a controversy with God.
• “Are you living for the Lord or for yourself?
Perhaps that is too general a question, so let
me be more specific. Is there anything God is
asking of you that you are withholding from
Him? Is there any point of contention
between you and Him? Not till EVERY
controversy is settled and the Holy Spirit is
given His full place can He reproduce the life
of Christ in any believer.” (Nee pg.145)
• Or do you not know that your body is the
temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom
you have from God, and you are not your
own? For you were bought at a price;
therefore glorify God in your body and in your
spirit, which are God’s 1 Cor.6:19-20
