Hello Everyone
Phew! Thank goodness March is over as it is my least favourite month, promises
lots, rarely delivers, but hey! It's April. Proper Springtime with daffs., tulips and sweet
smelling hyacinths.
Whinge Alert! It really annoys me when organisations from very large to tiny village
ones, put up hoardings and posters by the road side, on trees, bus shelters,
telegraph poles etc, and then do not take them down until weeks after the event,
when they become faded and tatty.
However, the very best place to advertise your event is right here in your magazine,
which goes to 1,500 households and a lot more people. So please feel free to send
in your news.
Have a lovely April

GRIMSTON MEDICAL
CENTRE
01485 600341
Sore throats are often caused by
viruses and usually settle within
one to two weeks without the need
for any medical treatment. White
spots on the tonsils do not imply a
need for antibiotics.
Paracetamol should be taken for
pain. Follow the advice on the
pack.
Salt gargles may be used to ease a sore throat in adults and
children over 12. Dissolve two teaspoons of salt in half a
glass of water, gargle and spit out. Repeat several times a day.
Please do not ask for antibiotics as refusal may offend
Many people give reasons for asking for antibiotics to treat
sore throats. I'm going on holiday, I'm getting married or
I've got exams are commonly cited. Viruses are immune to
such reasoning and antibiotics are no more likely to be
effective on these occasions.
When to see the doctor

If a sore throat is so severe that you cannot drink

If hoarseness persists for more than six weeks

If a child who is ill refuses to drink

If you think that you (or your child) are seriously

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
April is the cruellest month breeding lilacs out of a dead land... The poet TS Eliot
was referring to the annual resurgence of new life in Spring - which will only die once
more when its time comes, hence the cruelty: the annual cycle always leads to
death. But this is a bleak way of seeing the world.
As Christians we know that in Spring-time, each Easter-tide we can bear witness to
the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the life-blood which invigorates and
sustains our churches throughout the year. Our Christian faith is nourished by the
life-giving power of God in Christ Jesus, who gives us hope that will never die; the
power of the Holy Spirit is always at work in all our lives. April is in fact the most
joyful month and the season of Easter-tide lasts all month.
As a former city-dweller, I really appreciate the joy of rural life and being surrounded
by the natural beauty of the countryside in Spring. I was at an RSPB reserve last
week and saw the reed beds quivering with new bird-life. In our villages, the toad
patrols are on high alert near our wonderful ponds, as toads emerge from
hibernation for their spring migration to breed where they were born.
Gardeners too are stirring in their potting sheds, planning for the year ahead. Our
lawn-mower has been dusted off but during its annual service it gave up the ghost so
investing in a new mower became a priority. We decided against a self-propelled
one in case it ran away from us and attacked Rufus, always at our heels, but we
have gone for the best petrol engine we could afford, an investment in many happy
years of mowing to come!
With Easter falling early this year we can now enjoy a leisurely stroll towards late
Spring and Summer as we welcome the new influx of visitors to our beautiful county,
passing through our villages and churches. Springtime activity in churches is similar
to that of gardening: dusting off the produce stall and trying to summon up new
energy for fundraising as well as doing a bit of spring-cleaning. If you have ever
thought of getting a bit more involved in Church life, now is the perfect time we
really do need your help and support. Have a word with one of the churchwardens
or myself. Do come and join us for our Sunday services, especially as the weather
gets warmer!
Happy Spring-cleaning, Happy Gardening! Most of all Happy Easter-tide! Reverend
Judith

ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS

Leziate WI March meeting
The March meeting opened with the
singing of Jerusalem and there were
16 members present. Sally Jubb
demonstrated 'ribbon embroidery'
with an Easter theme using cross
stitch fabric and using an embroidery
frame. Each member was given
fabric ribbon and a large eye needle to
thread. Sally had finished pictures
that we could copy and the results
were quite good. After being shown
the basics it was quite easyunless
you had forgotten to take your glasses
though, like me! Sally was thanked by
Margaretta Whiskin.

Competition of a homemade craft

item was won by Jan Eason, 2nd Violet
Giles and 3rd Ali South. Raffle winner
was Betty Register. Birthday lady
was Violet Giles. Some members will
be attending the Nar Valley Group
meeting at Swaffham Assembly
Rooms on 13 April.
As our April WI meeting is on 19 April,
we are going to wear something red,
white or blue as it will be the Queen's
90th birthday on 21 April, so it will be
our tribute to a special lady.

Isabel Peck
We would very much like to thank so many people for the kind words expressed
about our mother, Isabel, who died on 23rd December 2015. We all appreciated
your support in words and in presence at her funeral. She will be remembered by
so many for her kindness, love, warmth and caring support. A few years ago, she
and Ron were very involved in All Saint's Church Ashwicken and the life of the
village, and they will be remembered for their house in the bluebell woods.

GAYTON NEWS
GAYTON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
At our March meeting, President Gillian welcomed our speaker, Fiona Dowson and we
were also delighted that Jan Newman was able to join us for the evening.
Fiona took us back in time to the Dark Ages after the Romans had left Britain. Her talk
was on Anglo-Saxon and Viking women's lives and crafts. Fiona gives talks and
demonstrates crafts as a volunteer at West Stow Anglo-Saxon village, near Bury St.
Edmunds in Suffolk, where the houses, built in the style of the period, stand on top of
archaeological foundations. She was dressed in the garb of a 'churl' (not quite a
slave). Her tunic was made out of a long piece of linen joined at each shoulder by a
clasp and with a belt at the waist made from twisted wool. Basic tools for making items
included a hand spindle for spinning wool or yarn. She also used a needle made from
either deer antler or bone similar to a crochet hook with which purses, hats or other
items were made. It was evident that life, although much simpler than ours, would
have been much harder then and she was thanked for bringing the era to life in a
fascinating talk.
After refreshments the business included notice of a Norfolk Federation Auditions
Day. This is when speakers who wish to be included in the County Yearbook are
invited to a meeting where they give a taster of their talk/demonstration to members.
After discussion the speaker is recommended (or otherwise) to be included in the list
of speakers available in the County. This helps W.I's when planning the annual
programme. Names were taken for the Nar Valley Group Meeting to be held on
Wednesday 13th April at the Assembly Rooms in Swaffham.
The competition for a Pretty/Unusual earring was won by Maureen, with Marion
second and Gillian third and raffle prizes went to Ann, Gillian and Jan.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th April at 7.30 pm in the Jubilee Hall when
the speaker will be Ann Newmeir talking on My Suitcase (My Patience and Him). An
intriguing title and if any ladies are interested in coming to hear her talk you will receive
a warm welcome.

Gayton Parish Council News

Meeting held 14th March 2016
Streetlighting
The Clerk explained that the Council's
streetlight maintenance firm had
confirmed that none of the existing
lamps are in a condition bad enough
to warrant imminent replacement.
Therefore, the Council agreed that it is
unnecessary to spend money
converting the lamps to LEDs whilst
they are still in reasonable working
order. The Council also received
requests from two parishioners to
consider installing further streetlights
on the footpath between Springvale
and Hills Crescent and on Grimston
Road. The Council noted its dark sky
policy, however, confirmed that
lighting would be considered if it
would alleviate identifiable safety
issues and was affordable. This issue
will be considered at the next meeting
once further information is gathered.
Jubilee Hall
The Council was pleased to see so
many people at the Parish Council
meeting who were concerned about
the future of the Jubilee Hall. Whilst
the Parish Council has no
responsibility or power to run the Hall,
it supports the Management
Committee in its call for volunteers to
help with the day to day running of the
Hall. At present, there are three
Trustees who are managing all of the
work, however, this cannot continue
and more volunteers are required in
order to ensure that the Hall stays
open as a facility to the Parish.

Volunteers are required to join the

Committee to fill the roles of
Chairman, Bookings Manager etc but
also a representative from each user
group of the Hall should also attend
meetings and contribute to the
decisions made. It is hoped that
interested residents will attend the
Jubilee Hall AGM on Wednesday
13th April at 7.30pm.
Flooding on Back Street
Mr Beales confirmed that he is
pushing Norfolk County Council
Highways for some action to deal with
this problem before there is significant
damage to the Highway. The Parish
Council will also write to County
Councillor Coke and NCC Highways
to add its concerns about the
increasing flooding problems.
Planning
It was noted that the three major
planning applications made in Gayton
(Manor Farm, rear of Rampant Horse
and Allens Garage) will be considered
by the Borough Council Planning
Committee on 11th April. This is a
public meeting and Cllr Bal Anota will
be representing the Parish when each
application is considered.

Next Parish Council Meeting

The next Meeting will be held at
7.30pm on 11th April 2016 at Gayton
Jubilee Hall. 01553 841387

Learn, Laugh, Love and Be the Best that you

can Be!

Gayton Primary
School in Space
( well, Leicester
actually)

Willow and Oak Class have been

learning about Our Place in Space
and Space in their class topics
during this last term. As part of the
topics, both classes visited the
National Space Centre in Leicester
in mid-March.

I really liked looking round the

exhibits, as they werent all just
writing, there was things to do.
Another thing I liked, was the
simulator, as it bumped around
everywhere and I felt as if I was in a
rocket in space.
- Poppy
I thought this would be OK but it was
magnificent and amazing.
- Chelsea
I had a wonderful time in the
Planetarium and we even got to
programme our own Mars rover!
- Louisa

It was a fantastic trip and the

children were all very tired by the
end of a long day!
Here are some comments from the
children
I loved the planetarium because it
made me feel like I was flying.
- Matthew
It was awesome we saw 2 huge
rockets!
Jessica
I think one of the
best things we did
had to be climbing
144 steps to see 2
real life rockets, it
made me so dizzy
looking over the
barrier
because
they were so big!
-

Millie

At the end of the day, just as Willow

class were waiting for the last few
mums and dads to pick up the
children, we looked up to the sky
and saw the moon. We stood and
thought
about
how
amazing it was that we
could look up in the sky
and see the moon when
just a couple of hours
earlier, we had seen a
piece of moon rock on
display that had been
brought all the way down
to earth! Wow!

Gayton Jubilee Village Hall

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Gayton Jubilee Village Hall will
take place on Wednesday, 13th April at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.
As well as the annual report on the hall finances and activities for
2015-16, elections will take place for membership of the hall
committee.
GAYTON EVERGREENS
At our February meeting the Evergreens had a virtual tour through photographic
images of the beautiful Norfolk coastline. Our guest speaker was David Holt, who is
also teacher of photography, gave his talk about the coastline between King's Lynn
and Cromer, every now and then calling inland a little, to investigate villages and
places of interest. We were all enthralled and it seemed as though we there
ourselves.
Mrs Kathie Bond and Mrs Eileen King were the winners of 5 each on the football
tote. There was a good raffle before everyone headed for home after having a lovely
afternoon spent in excellent company.
The March meeting in the Gayton Jubilee Village Hall was the venue for the
Evergreens springtime lunch, of sausages, peas and mash followed by apple pie and
custard which was heartily enjoyed by all.
This month Mr Eric Lamb won both games on the football tote a prize of 10. The
raffle was then called ending another lovely afternoon.
April 20th in the Gayton Jubilee Hall at 2-30pm is our next meeting, when we will be
hearing all about the work of the Blood Bikers.
The Evergreens will be having two coach outing this year and both members and
non members will be welcome on both, the first will on June 15th to Whaddeson
Manor near Aylesbury Bucks, price 20 for members and 23 none members.
On August 17th the outing will be to Nottingham for a cruise including lunch on the
River Trent. Price 24 for members, and none members 27. Please connect Derek
Clark on: 636377 if you would like to book a place.
For information on any of the above or if you are thinking of becoming a member of
the Evergreens please ring Kath Roberts on: 636178.

magazine bundles to our distributors in
Gayton and Bawsey. He (and sometimes
Gillian, his wife) can be seen on the Friday
ensuring that all bundles are delivered
safely and he is a vital member of the
team.
Thank you John.

Would you like to join the

Distribution Team for St
Nicholas Close and Hall Farm
Road, Gayton?
We need someone to deliver magazines
down these two short roads. The rounds
can be split if you can do just one of them.
This amounts to one short walk 10 months
out of 12.
The magazines will be
delivered to your door on the Friday for
you to take round over the next three days.
Please ring Sarah Renwick for more
details on 01553 636275. Thank you.

Megan's Challenge News

On the Wednesday 17 February 2016 a group of challengers were given a tour of
the new Tapping house premises. After Stephen Thrower and Chadwick Roberts
presented a cheque to Rebekah and Jessica of Tapping House for 1015, monies
raised completing the 24 Peaks in 24 hours in the Lake District in May last year.
A cheque for 250 was donated also to
Megan's Challenge. Many thanks to all
people that helped us to achieve this amount
and Steve at Robson Construction for
supplying the transport and fuel.

Ginas Page: an irregular page of fun things

A cab driver picked up a nun. She got into the cab, and noticed that the VERY
handsome cab driver wouldn't stop staring at her. She asked him why he was
staring. He replied: I have a question to ask, but I don't want to offend you.
She answered, My son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and
have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about
everything. I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find
offensive.
Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.
Well, let's see what we can do about that: No. 1, you have to
be single, and No. 2, you must be Catholic, she responded.
The cab driver, very excited, said, Yes, I'm single and
Catholic!

OK, the nun said. Pull into the next alley.

The nun fulfilled his fantasy with a kiss that knocked his socks off..
But when they got back on the road, the cab driver started crying.
My dear child, said the nun, Why are you crying?
Forgive me but I've sinned. I lied and I must confess; I'm married and I'm Jewish.
The nun said, That's OK. My name is Kevin and I'm going to a costume party.

Savoury Drop Scones (I love these!)

2 cups of self-raising flour: tsp. sea salt: tsp black pepper: tsp dried mixed
herbs: tsp dried mustard powder: 1 large egg 1 cups of milk. Oil for cooking.
Beat all ingredients together for about 1 min. Heat oil to quite hot, but not burning,
drop a large spoonful of mixture in oil and cook for about 1 min each side. Place on
warmed serving dish and serve or cover them with foil and they
can be warmed up in an oven later. Serving suggestions: just
with butter: cream cheese and smoked salmon. Cottage cheese
and chives, cheddar and pickle, or with chilli jam . Oh Yum.

EAST WINCH NEWS

EAST WINCH VILLAGE HALL.

AN APPEAL. Your village hall needs you
Our current trustees have served for many years but with advancing age and health
issues we do urgently need help. We seem to have reached a point however,
where unless we can get new blood to run and administer the affairs of the hall, we
will have to seriously consider closing the hall. This would be a blow to the clubs
who currently use the hall and I can assure everyone that this is a decision the
trustees would not wish to take as we feel the village would regret the demise of
this vital asset.
For the past nine years I together with the other trustees have managed to keep the
hall moving forward. We have bookings and clubs on most days/evenings of the
week. The hall has been updated (where finances allowed) and we received a
grant from W.R.E.N. for the refurbishment of the kitchen. We have been able to
afford to engage a regular cleaner and grass cutter.
It's the admin side that we need cover for. Arranging bookings and paying bills etc. ,
So if you have any free time during the week, and like us, wish to see the hall
continue to thrive, PLEASE contact me on 841309 where I can give you further
details and a honest appraisal of what being a trustee entails.

Parish Council meeting 7th March

At this well-attended meeting the Council decided to ask Mr Bland to continue the
renovation of the telephone box. The Clerk is to follow up where the authentic red
paint can be obtained. The Council agreed to share the cost of a new notice board
equally with the Village hall committee. The chairman is to ask the owner of a tree
obscuring light from the Station Rd trod to cut it well back.
In future, the minutes of meetings will be available on the Village website only.
During the open forum a parishioner complained of yet another accident - the
second in a month - at the corner by the RSPCA. The clerk is to inform NCC
Highways and police and press for action. The amount of dog mess fouling the
trod, especially near the junction of Station Rd and Gayton Rd was complained of,
as was the disgusting amount of rubbish on the A47 blown from the tip. Jim
Moriarty had been helpful in urging the Borough Council to tidy up. It appears that
the tip is being closed at the end of March, but it's not known whether any nearby
space is being used or whether it is to go away from Blackborough altogether.
Council to pursue this.
The new street lights in Town Close seem to be generally approved of. They will
be much cheaper to run and maintain than conventional sodium lights. The
Council will now move on to replace the lights in Station Rd and Church Lane.
The application for outline planning permission for a house at Station Cottage was
approved.
Ideas had been sought for the best ways of using the playing field. To put most of
these into effect will require a change in the restrictions (no ball games, no over14s, no dogs), and the Council will check with the Borough Council whether it will
be possible to do this.
The next meeting and AGM will be at 7pm on Monday, 25th April, a week earlier
than usual.
How would you like to use our phone box?
As an information centre? A library? a home for a defibrilator? Or something
entirely different? Please tell a parish councillor if you have any ideas. It would be
lovely if it could be used.
Caf Style Family Services
Instead of having a church service on the 2nd Sunday in each month, we are
moving to the Village Hall, where, in an informal family service, you'll be able to
enjoy refreshments, and there'll be activities for the children so they'll be happy
while you worship. The next two dates are 10th April and 8th May, both and 10.30.
Why not give it a go?

Junk for sale

We've been clearing out the space beneath the tower at All Saints. There's a
remarkable collection of old bric-a-brac, including a large metal trunk, a metal dustbin
(perfect for bonfires!), five stoneware jars, and more!
We'd like to dispose of them, preferably in exchange for
a donation to the church. Anyone who'd like to look at
what's there should contact Nell (840814), Janet
(840510) or Wendy (842281).

East Winch Village Hall Short Mat Bowls Club

I joined our Short Mat Bowls Club just over eight years ago, shortly after moving into the
village. At the time I wanted to meet people and make friends and although I had never
played short mats bowls before, or even held a bowl, I thought this seemed a good way to
start. I was made very welcome on my first night and despite being a complete novice
they showed a great deal of patience together with a lot of helpful hints and bags of
enthusiasm. That night I forged many friendships and although that was my main aim I
came to enjoy the bowling as well.
With the passage of time many of our current short matters cannot always attend as
much as they used to and we are keen to attract new members. We play every
Wednesday evening between 7.00pm and 9.30pm, except in the bad winter months
when we meet Wednesday afternoons. The cost of the evening is 2.00 which includes
tea and biscuits and if you do not own any bowls there is always some to borrow when
you first come. The evenings are filled with much chat and a lot of laughter as well as
very gentle competition; so, if you are new to the local area, recently retired and looking
for a new hobby, or would simply like to give bowling a try (and you do not have to be of a
certain age to do so), why not come along. We are all waiting to welcome you!
If you would like any more information please call me on 01553 842453 or Janet or Terry
Robertson on 01553 841309.

EAST WALTON NEWS

RAISE THE ROOF CONCERT at GAYTON CHURCH
on Saturday April 16th at 7 pm
East Walton church needs 200,000 for work on its
roof: to help towards this appeal we have gathered
together amazing talent including: A children's string
orchestra, Matthew Lee on viola, King's Lynn Male
Voice Choir, soprano Amber Batten, Louise Smith
reciting comic monologues, Richard Winch who is local
and a professional singer with a most wonderful high
baritone voice. The compere is a good friend of mine,
Michael Carter-Rowlands, and I may come out of
retirement to sing as well. It is not a ticket event, but
we hope you will give generously in the retiring
collection.

GAYTON THORPE NEWS

Easter Service and Egg hunt
Thank you to everyone who came to our Easter Service and Egg Hunt and to
everyone who helped to make it happen. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Church changes
Having obtained a temporary licence to remove the reredos to see the state of the
wall behind it and a licence to limewash the walls, we will aim to carry out this work
over the summer months, funds permitting. Limewashing will cost in the region of
3000, so we will need to do some fundraising for this. We will look at all the funding
options we have and then decide how best to raise the remainder needed.
We believe we have found a home for the organ, where it will be looked after and
used to help in the teaching and development of skills in organ restoration and
musical performance. Now we have a potential home, we will apply for a faculty for
the necessary permissions.
This is all we are doing for the first phase.
Provided this first phase is successful, we will then look and see whether any further
changes would be helpful to add to the ways in which the church can be used.
If anyone would like to contribute any help towards our fundraising target, either by a
donation, or with ideas for fundraising, please do get in touch.
Sarah (07776 158659)

GEAR 10K
After many years I have decided to put on my running shoes again and join the many
people running the GEAR 10K on May 1st. I am running to raise awareness and
funds for pseudomyxoma survivor, a charity which gives help and support to those
suffering from this rare form of cancer. If you would like to sponsor me, please visit
my just giving page: www.justgiving.com/Sarah-Kerkham
It would be great to raise enough to make the pain worthwhile

And Finally...
So I saw this bloke playing Dancing Queen on a didgeridoo. I thought,
That's Abba-riginal.
Last night I dreamt I was the author of Lord of the Rings. I was Tolkien in my sleep.
