SHARON CUNETA BOOSTS TITO SOTTO’S CANDIDACY

DepEd tells teachers: Stay neutral
EDUCATION Secretary Mona Valisno has warned all its officials, public school teachers and employees not to involve themselves in partisan politics. “I call on the entire Department, especially the Superintendents who will serve in the Board of Canvassers, and the teachers who will serve in the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) in the various precincts nationwide to preserve the integrity and dignity of the education sector by not engaging directly or indirectly in electioneering or any partisan political activity except to vote,” Valisno stressed. The education chief said all DepEd employees should be role models among all government employees and they should maintain utmost impartiality and neutrality in exercising their official functions during the conduct of the elections. According to Valisno, all DepEd employees found to be engaged in electioneering will be administratively charged and subject to disciplinary action under Civil Service Law and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees. Valisno added that they will immediately look into reports that teachers are involved in electioneering activities. Marco Lorenzana
PNP declares heightened regional alert status
THE Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday went on heightened alert status as part of its preparations for the upcoming May 10 synchronized national elections and also the May 1 Labor Day celebrations which is traditionally marked by rallies by various groups, particularly in Metro Manila. ”The upgrading of normal to heightened alert status is effective 8 a.m. today,” said PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina. Espina said the heightened alert status is already enforced from Police Regional Office-1 to PRO-8, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) PRO, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), National Headquarters and the National Support Units (NSUs). On the other hand, PROs 9 to 13, the PRO in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and the elite Special Action Force (SAF) will remain on full alert status which has been enforced earlier following strings of atrocities, like kidnapping and bombings, in the areas under the jurisdictions of the said regional commands.

May 3 is non-working holiday
MALACAÑANG declared May 3 a non working holiday to commemorate Labor Day which falls on May 1, a Saturday. This means that workers, professionals and laborers, and students on summer classes will enjoy a long weekend. Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza announced Proclamation No. 2042 cited at the Republic Act 9849, which indicated that holidays — including Labor Day — will be observed on the nearest Monday. The new statement is in line with the government’s thrust of encouraging holiday economics, which provides employees a longer weekend, encouraging them to go out of town and hopefully spur the country’s tourism industry. “(It also) encourages families to get together and strengthen their relationship towards a more productive environment, as well as promotes domestic tourism and enables employers to plan their work schedules effectively and efficiently, resulting in improved productivity which is achieved whether the holiday falls on Friday or Monday,” Mendoza said in the issuance. ERAP WON’T BACK CHIZ’S SENATE BID
DAET, Camarines Norte -- Former President Joseph Estrada has refused to endorse Sen. Chiz Escudero as new Senate president in a snap election in the Upper Chamber to prevent a vacuum of leadership in case of a failure of election. This turn of events came after Escudero announced his support for Sen. Noynoy Aquino for president, not his ninong sa kasal, Estrada, but came out openly for Estrada’s runningmate, Makati Mayor Jojo Binay, for vice president. In a radio interview yesterday (April 28) during his Bicol and Southern Tagalog campaign swing, he said he will tell his son, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, and others who are members of his party not to vote for Escudero as new Senate president. Estrada, a former senator himself, said he will just leave the decision to the members of the Senate, saying they cannot be dictated and everyone should respect their independence. He said he is not affected by Escudero’s move to back Aquino instead of him, stressing that people who trooped to his political rallies have not lessened but even increased in number. That is why, Estrada said, he does not believe in surveys, as his popularity is buttressed by multitude of supporters attending his rallies, with or without the support of Escudero. Sen. Edgardo J. Angara first proposed a snap election for the Senate presidency because the incumbent head, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, will not be a senator come June 30 if there is a failure of election and cannot succeed as acting president of the land.
Vilma Santos postpones campaign
BATANGAS Governor and reelectionist Vilma Santos-Recto has temporarily postponed her campaign sorties in deference to her her political rival Armand Sanchez who died on Tuesday night. Recto said she cannot pursue his scheduled campaign while Sanchez’ family is mourning. Sanchez, 57, passed away on Tuesday, a day after he suffered from heatstroke. His physician, Dr. Robert Magsino, president and medical director of Mary Mediatrix Medical Center in Lipa City, said his death was caused by “brain hemorrhage.” His remains now lie at his farm in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. Lorna Gamboa
‘Hello Garci’ cheat plot is dead – Comelec
COMMISSION on Elections (Comelec) chairman Jose Melo has assured that with the poll automation, there would be no vote rigging operations on May 10 elections. Melo said even if there were election personnel linked to the “Hello Garci” scandal who were still with the poll body, they would not be able to cheat the automated polls. Melo issued the statement after Sen.Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel said he wanted a Comelec official who reportedly has links with controversial former poll body Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano be removed from office. Pimentel was referring to Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) regional director Ray Sumalipao, a supposed Garcillano protégé who was allegedly part of an operation that rigged the results of the 2004 elections to favor administration bets led by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. But Melo said another Garci cheat plot cannot happen again because there won’t be a manual transport of election results and statement of votes to the canvassing centers. Ampie Galpo
Prices of school supplies to remain at 2009 level
THERE will be no increase in prices of notebooks and other school supplies in the coming school opening in June. Trade and Industry Secretary Jesli A. Lapus assured this after meeting with the school supply manufacturers including the converters and retailers. “International prices of pulp have increased but this would not affect consumers at this time but possibly second half of the year because the inventories have been out already. Sufficiency of supply is already assured and positioned for distribution,” he said. Lapus said Brazil, the biggest source of recycled paper, has raised prices. “Prices of school supplies have actually been the same as 2009,” he said. Industry players have also assured him that prices based on suggested retail prices will remain unchanged from last year ’s level. This also goes for all other school supplies including pad papers, notebooks, pencils, crayons, ballpens and school uniforms. The SRPs would be displayed in retail outlets. Converters and retailers are also required to observe the minimum labelling requirements such as name and address of manufacturer, number of pages and quality and standards of the products. IN the tradition of its family-oriented live-CGI blockbuster “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “Garfield” movies, 20 th Century Fox unleashes “Marmaduke,” a 1954 comic strip on the world’s most gregarious Great Dane starring Academy Award nominee William H. Macy, Judy Greer and Lee Pace with a voice cast that includes Owen Wilson, Kiefer Sutherland, Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Black Eyed Peas’ Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson. Tom Dey, who gave us the hilarious “Shanghai Noon” and romantic comedy “Failure to Launch” once again lends his comedic paw prints in “Marmaduke” where the story embarks on the wacky misadventures of the Winslow family with their beloved Great Dane Marmaduke (voiced by Owen Wilson). In the movie Phil (Lee Pace) and Debbie (Judy Greer) Winslow queasily move in to a new neighborhood, their hyper-driven canine Marmaduke sees the move as a whole new leash for more exploration. As Marmaduke explores his vast new surrounding, he finds himself in the middle of an ongoing battle of fitting in and wooing his newfound purebred love. “We’ve approached the movie like a John Hughes movie with dogs,” Dey says in an interview from USA Today. “The dog park is like high school for dogs. To make this kind of movie, you really have to understand that it is the dog’s world and we just live in it.” The story in Marmaduke will be told from the viewpoint of the dog - like Scooby Doo, but hopefully not as bad. “Marmaduke is a teenager, and he’s trying to find his way in the world,” Dey further explains. “It’s a boy-meets-girl story, a coming-of-age and cautionary tale.” Whacks of family fun unleashes when “Marmaduke”opens June 4 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

PNP holds simultaneous nationwide prayer for H.O.P.E.
SIMULTANEOUS ceremonies were held today in all city and municipal police stations across the country marking the national day of prayer for honest, orderly and peaceful elections. The center of nationwide prayer for HOPE activities was in Camp Crame where police personnel stationed in the National Headquarters joined representatives from the clergy and other stakeholders in a national prayer for clean and credible elections in May 10. In his message, PNP Chief, Director General Jesus A Verzosa urged all sectors of Philippine society to support all efforts to ensure the holding of honest, orderly and peaceful elections. As a component of the Joint Security Control Commitees (JSCC) in the national, regional, provincial and municipal level, the PNP is now in the thick of election security operations alongside the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other government law enforcement agencies to enforce election laws being implemented by the Comelec for the May 10 national elections. "Thru the national prayer for HOPE, we expect all stakeholders to unite behind a common national objective of securing the future of our nation," Verzosa said. The Chief PNP was in Davao City on Wednesday where he led the PNP delegation to a Forum for Peace organized by the Bishop-Ulama Conference. "As we have committed ourselves to build bridges of solidarity, reconciliation and peace by way of dialogue, we have taken the initial critical steps toward realizing our collective dream to achieve lasting peace thru prayer, national reconciliation and respectful dialogue amongst the clergy, religious, military and police components of this peace forum," Verzosa told the congregation of Christian and Muslim leaders in the dialogue.

Manila officials inaugurate Sta. Ana Hospital
THE modern, fully-airconditioned, ten-storey city hospital in Sta. Ana is finally open to serve the poor residents not only from Manila’s sixth district but the entire city as well. Mayor Alfredo S. Lim and Vice Mayor Isko Moreno led the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the hospital’s inauguration, which was attended by secretary to the mayor Rafaelito Garayblas and chief of staff Ric de Guzman as well as Liga ng Mga Barangay president Philip Lacuna and his brother-councilor Dennis and District 6 congressional candidate Sandy Ocampo, among others. Dr. Lucio Tan and wife Carmen, whose Tan Yan Kee Foundation was also instrumental in the construction of the said hospital, were also present in the affair. The said hospital, according to city engineer Armand Andres, sits on an 8,000-square-meter lot with a floor area of at least 5,000 square meters and has a 500-bed capacity. The opening of the said hospital, constructed by the Freyssinet (F.F. Cruz) Filipino Corporation, marks the fruition of Lim’s vision since he became mayor in 1992, of building one city hospital giving free medical services for the poor residents for each of Manila’s six districts. The said hospitals are headed respectively by Dr. Fidel Chua, Dr. Marlon Millares, Dr. Martin Teodoro, Dr. Janet Tan, Dr. Mario Lato and Dr. Jun Cando.

Pilipinas has agreed to hold its first-ever joint tournament by early June, preparatory to a long-term agreement to merge the two entities. A memorandum of agreement (MOA) was signed between Chairman Abundio “Ding” Camua of Pascual Laboratories and San Miguel Corporation’s Robert Non representing the PBL and Pinoy Basketball, Inc.’s (Liga) CEO Jose Emmanuel “Noli Eala” and witnessed by PBA Chairman Angelito Alvarez and SBP Deputy Executive Director Bernardo Atienza. Officials of both leagues were happy at getting over all the initial hurdles of coming together after several months of negotiations and finally forging a tie-up that should capitalize on each league’s respective strengths.
PBL-La Liga merger looms
THERE is a great possibility that the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), the country’s premiere amateur commercial league and La Liga Pilipinas, the country’s biggest regional league, will become one after several months of discussion. But as to when will the merger take place is still an open-ended question. The PBL and La Liga
USJ-R fights for survival vs Lyceum at V-League
THE University of San Jose-Recoletos goes allout against Lyceum today, needing no less than a victory to force a playoff for the last quarterfinal berth in the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan. Winless in three games, the Lady Jaguars try to avoid elimination as they battle the Lady Pirates in the 2 p.m. opener of a tripleheader at the close of the single round elimination phase of the tournament. USJ-R coach Grace Antigue hopes to draw out the best from guest players Michiko Castaneda and Michelle Simbajon and mainstays Rachel Singson, Carla Dubduban, Abigail Praca and Joy Bonita in what could be as their final game in the first conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and presented by PLDT MyDSL.
LeBron, Cavs eliminate Bulls, face Celtics next
CLEVELAND – LeBron James just missed a triple-double despite an apparently sore right elbow, and the Cleveland Cavaliers advanced to a playoff date with Boston by beating Chicago 96-94 in Game 5 on Tuesday night in perhaps Vinny Del Negro's final game as Bulls coach. James, favoring a tender right elbow that appears to hurt worse than he's letting on, scored 19 points — 16 in the second half — and added 10 rebounds and nine assists as the Cavs finally saddled the stubborn Bulls to win the series 4-1. Unable to lift his right arm, James was forced to shoot a free throw left-handed with 7.8 seconds left.
Our Daily Bread
When a publishing company asked me to write an endorsement for a new book, I said I’d be glad to. It appeared to be a helpful effort directed to young people, challenging them to live for God in a changing world. But as I read the book, something troubled me. Although it had lots of Scripture and great spiritual advice, it didn’t explain that the starting point for any relationship with God is salvation through Jesus Christ. The writer seemed to imply that the essence of living spiritually in modern society is based totally on action—good deeds—and not on saving faith in Christ. I didn’t write the endorsement. The culture of the church is changing rapidly. Often left behind in the rush to find exciting new ideas is the essential nature of the gospel. The apostle Paul was astonished that people so readily embraced a “different gospel” (Gal. 1:6). What he preached was not from man, but a direct revelation from Jesus Himself (vv.1112). We must never let go of that true gospel: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again for our justification, declaring us righteous before God (Rom. 4:25; 1 Cor. 15:3-4). This alone offers the “power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16). If we want to live for God, this is the only place to start. — Dave Branon No one can say he doesn’t need Forgiveness for his sin, For all must come to Christ by faith To have new life within. —Branon Faith is the hand that must take God’s gift of salvation.
