Factory Radio Removal


1. Before proceeding, eject discs from factory unit if
present.
2. Set parking brake and disconnect negative
battery cable to prevent any electrical short.
3. Insert VW radio removal tools into slots in each side of
factory radio face as shown. Slowly press in tools until
a click is heard from each side. The click will unlock
radio.
4. Pull tools to pull radio out of dash opening. Disconnect
wiring harness and unplug antenna lead to remove radio.
5. Remove two (2) Torx T15 screws from dash opening
as shown. Note: Retain these screws.

NOTES:

Receiver Installation (without trim ring)

Please read first

Inspect factory receiver harness connector in vehicle.


Ensure that the wiring adaptor received from Crutchfield
plugs into the vehicles connector. If the connector is
missing or incorrect, please call our Technical
Support Department at 1-800-955-9094.

1. Secure receiver mounting bracket to dash with screws previously removed


from dash opening.

2. Connect receiver wiring adaptor to receiver following instructions supplied with


wiring adaptor.

DIN Sleeve
3. Remove DIN sleeve and trim ring from receiver if in place (Figure 1).
Note: The trim ring will not be used in this installation.
4. Slide DIN sleeve into receiver mounting bracket and secure to
bracket by bending the securing tabs (Figure 2).
5. Hold receiver near dash. Connect receiver wiring
adaptor to factory harness. Plug antenna lead
into rear of receiver.
If using an antenna adaptor: Be sure the antenna cable
(lead) is plugged in and the blue power wire of the antenna
adaptor is properly connected.

6. Slide receiver fully into sleeve and


test operation.
7. Install receiver faceplate A

by snapping into place.

Receiver Installation (with trim ring)

1. Connect receiver wiring adaptor to receiver following instructions supplied with


wiring adaptor.

2. Remove DIN sleeve and trim ring from receiver (Figure 1).
3. Place receiver faceplate B (supplied with installation kit) into receiver
opening.

4. Slide DIN sleeve through opening in faceplate and secure by bending the
securing tabs (Figure 2).
5. Hold receiver near dash. Connect receiver wiring
adaptor to factory harness. Plug antenna lead into rear of receiver.
If using an antenna adaptor: Be sure the antenna cable (lead) is
plugged in and the blue power wire of the antenna adaptor is
properly connected.

6. Slide receiver fully into sleeve and test

7. Install trim ring.

Door Speakers

IMPORTANT:

Please read first


Instructions show factory size speakers or speakers
with adaptor brackets only. Cutting or fabrication (not
shown) will be required for other speaker sizes.

Note: Door panel for 2003- models


is slightly different in appearance, but
removal steps are the same as 1998model shown.

If vehicle is equipped with Monsoon system, a speaker mounting


bracket must be fabricated in order to install an aftermarket
speaker. An adaptor is available for non-Monsoon applications.

1. Pry off door pull handle cover. Remove two


(2) exposed phillips screws from door pull handle.

2. 1998- 2002 models: Remove two (2) Torx


T20 screws from bottom of door panel.
2003- models: Remove three (3) Torx T20 screws
from bottom of door panel.

Rivets

3. Pry out bottom and sides of door panel to


release six (6) retaining clips. Lift door panel
firmly to release. Disconnect wiring harnesses
and door release cable to remove door panel
(Figure 1).

4. Use a drill and 3/8 bit to drill out rivets


securing speaker assembly to door. Pull out
assembly, disconnect and remove (Figure 2).
Use a nail punch to knock out remains of rivets in
mounting surface.
5. Secure new speaker to speaker adaptor
bracket. Place speaker/bracket assembly in
location and mark new mounting holes. Remove
speaker and drill new holes with a 1/8 bit.
6. Connect speaker wiring adaptor of
replacement speaker to vehicle speaker
harness. Secure speaker/bracket assembly
to location (Figure 3).
7. Test speaker operation and reinstall door panel
by reversing removal steps.

CAUTION:

Always be careful when drilling in a vehicle. WEAR EYE


PROTECTION. Be aware of things such as wiring, windows,
fuel lines and safety devices. Check drilling depth and
location to avoid damage to vehicle appearance.

Rear Speakers -- Coupe

NOTES:

1. Pry around sides and bottom of rear side panel to release six (6) plastic retaining clips and one (1) metal retaining clip in scuff plate. Lift rear side
panel and remove (Figure 1). Note: Fold seat back forward to make rear edge of side panel more accessible.
2. Remove four (4) phillips screws securing speaker assembly. Pull out assembly, disconnect and remove.
3. Connect speaker wiring adaptor of replacement speaker to vehicle speaker harness. Secure speaker with screws previously removed (Figure 2).
4. Test speaker operation and reinstall rear side panel by reversing removal steps.

1. Open convertible top.


2. Fold up rear seat bottom cushion. Slide pivot rod out of brackets to
remove cushion (Figures 1 & 2).

3. Pull both rear headrests upward to remove (Figure 2).


4. Remove three (3) 6mm allen screws at bottom edge of rear seat back
cushion (Figure 2).

5. Pull handle of trunk access panel to remove.

6. Remove rear seat back cushion (Figure 2).


7. Remove one (1) 10mm nut at top rear edge of rear side panel
(Figure 3).

8. Pry out bottom front edge of rear side panel (near scuff plate) to
release retaining clip (Figure 3, previous page).

9. Pry out rear edge of rear side panel to release retaining clips.
10. Pull rear edge of panel out over 10mm stud. Work panel up and out
enough to disconnect cable.
11. Pry metal clip off convertible top cover cable. Pry cable end off
stud (Figure 4).
12. Disconnect flap motor and tweeter harnesses. Set panel aside.
13. Remove four (4) tamper-proof Torx T20 screws securing speaker.
Pull out speaker, disconnect and remove. Note: A tamper-proof
Torx driver will be required.
14. Connect speaker wiring adaptor of replacement speaker to vehicle
speaker harness. Secure speaker with screws previously removed
(Figure 5).
15. Test speaker operation and reassemble rear of vehicle by reversing
removal steps.
