Live Video Conference with Singapore fans -- Manila, PH --5/12/09 [first part of audio unavailable] Fan: [What song in] the
whole wide world, would you loved to have written, composed, and sung by yourself, instead of the original artist? David: Oh wow. There's a lot. Um... MC: What are some [sound cuts in and out] -David: [sound still cutting in and out] --song of all time? [Questioner makes comment that can't be heard] [David laughs] David: Um...I wish-- yeah, that'd be fine. I wish I would've written "Happy Birthday." [Questioner laughs] Fan: Why? David: That's money, man. That's money. [crowd laughs] David: But I think uh...uh, one of my fa-- one of my favorite songs is actually uh..."Live and Let Die." Um...by Paul McCartney. Um...so probably that one. I would have loved to have written that just...cuz I like the song. Fan: Ok. So, uh... David: And "Happy Birthday." And also that one. Fan: Ok, um...next question. Uh, if there was a Britney Spears week on Idol, what songs are you to sing? [brief pause. Then David and the crowd start laughing] David: Uh...oh wow. [Questioner laughs] David: And I thought Mariah Carey week was gonna be rough. [A few people laugh] David: Um...what Britney Spears song. Um... [pauses] I only know, like, three of 'em. Uh...
[a few people laugh] David: I guess-- I guess really just-- like, I can't think of another one right now. Probably "Hit Me Baby One More Time." [crowd laughs] David: And I would've slowed it down and done it acoustic. Fan: Awesome. Ok, cool. [pauses] [to MC] One more question? Oh, OK. [back to David] Um...alright. Uh...what's the closest thing to a diva demand that you had while on tour? David: What's the closest thing to what? I'm sorry? Fan: To a diva demand? [long pause. Someone tells David what she is saying] David: Oh to a diva demand! Oh! [a few people laugh] David: Um... [sighs, then pauses] I gotta say, I don't think I have one. Yet. Fan: Are you sure? David: I don't know. [To Michelle] Do I have one? My manager's just-- my manger's sitting right over... [looks for Michelle] over there. Uh, no mustard. That's probably my diva demand. [a few people laugh] David: Uh, I don't like mustard. At all. Fan: OK David: So... Fan: Alright, thank you! [sound cuts in and out] MC: Thank you. Fan2: Um, hi David. David: Hiiii Fan2: Hi. OK. Um...so my question is, um: If you could describe yourself as a type of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, what-- which flavor would it be?
[a few people laugh] [long pause] David: Ooooh. Um...well there's two ways to answer this. One, uh...I could go by my favorite ice cream, which is half-baked. But I don't-- I'm not half-baked. So... [a few people laugh] David: Uh... [laughs] so...I'll go, I'll go chocolate chip cookie dough. Get it? [a few people laugh] David: It's so weird, the delay. Like, do you get it? Are you sure? Fan2: Yeah David: OK Fan2: Thank you. So, you have a deep hatred for mustard, right? What is the story behind it? [pause. Then a few people laugh] David: Aw, man. Ah...I already answered this in another interview, so I guess I gotta answer it again. Um...I swore I would never tell this story, but...this will be the second time I've said it today. Um...I uh...I was at a bobbing for beads contest in college, and the beads were in a big vat of mustard. And the girl that went before me threw up in the mustard. And didn't say anything. And that... [crowd reacts audibly] David: ...started it. Fan2: Oh my God. OK. [pauses] Um, OK. Um, another one is: Which one of yours and Michael Johns' Mavid dances is your favorite? Someone in the crowd: The last one [crowd laughs] David: Um...the last one. [Questioner laughs] David: And I don't know if people actually got a good...shot of it. Cuz uh, we got sprayed with silly string. Um...but we'd actually worked it out to where...we would actually...pull underwear out of...our pants. [long pause] But the underwear wasn't ripped. It was supposed to look like we were wearing them, and then somehow miraculously took them off. Um...but it didn't work out. So...
Fan2: Thank you. David: That was a terrible story. On my part. I apologize for that. That's... Fan2: No, it's OK! David: Wow Fan2: OK [David laughs] [long pause] [brief snafu over the microphone omitted] Fan3: Hi David. Hi. My name is Anthony. David: Hi, how are you? Anthony: Yeah. I'm fine. OK, um...my first question for you is, um... MC: Ask the question. Anthony: Yeah. Some of us, uh, are going to Manila for your concert. Will we actually get a chance to see Terry there? [a few people laugh, then David laughs] David: Um... [pauses] well...probably not. And here's why: Anthony: OK David: Uh, Terry...um...Terry hates flying. Uh... [a few people laugh] David: ...he gets really severe...motion sickness. Um... [pauses] to the point where we actually...uh...we, we've had to...really add costs to the... [sounds cuts in and out] tour. We've had to buy him...um, his own rental car. Anthony: Ohh OK David: Cuz the bus shakes too much ___. So was able to. [crowd laughs] David: Uh, Terry won't be able to make it. Anthony: OK. Alright, OK. Um...ok, the next question, um, the song "Lie" is one of my favorites in the album.
David: Mm-hmm Anthony: What is the story behind the song? And uh, will you ever release it as a single? [long pause] David: Um...the story behind [sound cuts in and out] um...it's kinda generic. Uh...I, I mean...I've been in those relationships before where...you stay cuz it's comfortable, but you know you're not supposed to be in 'em. Um...ya' know, so...kinda the premise behind the song [sound cuts in and out] "Lie to me and tell me that we're-it's gonna be alright." You know what I mean? Um... Anthony: Yeah David: As far as a single goes...I know we've tested for it. I know it's-- I know it's...I know it's on the short list. I don't know...I don't know if it'll be...or if it won't be. Uh... [sound cuts in and out] Anthony: OK. Alright. David: But, we love playin' the song, and uh, I'm happy to hear that somebody else enjoys it. Anthony: Yeah, I love it. Thank you. Ok uh...you sang two unreleased tracks on your tour: "Souvenir" and "We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping." Any chance you will release them? Maybe as a, as a bonus track on the album, or...something like that? David: Uh... [pauses] uh...there is uh...there's a decent chance. I think um, you know, depending on how well The Record does, there could always be a deluxe version or...uh, we could always do a live record. And, and, you know, hopefully there'll be another studio record. Um... Anthony: Yeah. [pause] Yeah. David: There's-- I mean, there's options for 'em. Um... Anthony: OK David: ...and they're certainly songs that I love, and songs that uh...um, the fans seem to enjoy. So I think uh...you know, time will tell. I don't know. Anthony: Ok. Alright. Thanks David. David: Thanks, man. Fan4: Ok, hi David. Um...what has been your greatest life lesson--
David: Hi! Fan4: Uh-- oh! Hi. [crowd laughs] Fan4: What has been your greatest life lesson so far, and what do you take away from it? [long pause. There is some confusion, and people think David didn't hear the question] Fan4 [to the MC]: He didn't hear me? Um, what has been-David: My greatest life lesson... Fan4: He did hear me. David: ...so far. [a few people laugh] David: Um... [long pause] I think um... [long pause] I think my greatest life lesson so far has just been uh...that, that... [pauses] it's short, man. So...enjoy [sound cuts in and out] for what you can, and get what you can out of it. And...um...ya' know I, I recently heard this poem called "The Dash." And um...it basically talks about, you know, that dash between...the day that you were born and the day that you die. [sound cuts in and out] And, and what you do with that dash. And uh...yeah, so I don't know. I think that's, that's...that's a lesson, man. I mean, life's just a dash, so...do whatever you can while you have it. Fan4: Ok, thanks. Um...describe each member of your band in just one word. And what one word would each of them use to describe you? [David laughs] David: Uh, Neal...uh...loyal. Fan4: OK David: Um...Andy...um... [long pause] [a few people laugh] David: Andy... [long pause] uh...dry. [crowd laughs] David: Joey...hilarious.
Fan4: Yeah [long pause] David: Kyle...um... [pause] uh...Kyle. Someone in the audience: Tank top David: Uh... [laughs] Kyle, uh...uh...talented. Fan4: OK David: Uh, what they would all say about me? Um...hopefully something good, because...I pay them. [crowd laughs] David: So I'll say...I'll say [sound cuts in and out] um...um...awesome. Hopefully they'd say "awesome." [crowd laughs] David: But they'd probably say "jerk" instead. Fan4: OK [laughs] OK, um...what is your thought process like when you're writing a song? [long pause] David: Uh...depends on the song. Um...uh...yeah, I don't know. I mean...if I try to write, like, a sappy love ballad, I usually try to think about a girl that I like. Um...or a girl that uh...that, I may have [sound cuts out] dating, or haven't broken-up with. Um...if I'm tryin' to write a [sound cuts in and out] an uptempo rock song, I'll usually think about...uh... [laughs] probably girls I've broken-up with. Um... [crowd laughs] David: No, but...yeah, I don't know. It kinda depends. Fan4: OK. Thank you. David: Thank you. Fan5: Hi David. Ok, um, you're a man of many talents. David: Hi Fan5: Uh, not only are you musically talented, you even secured a theatre scholarship but eventually emerged as um...better in graphic design. And, I'm curious to know what results in this shift.
[long pause] David: Um, wow. I don't know yet. And, and, uh...consistently tryin' to figure out exactly where my life's goin'. And I'm playing music right now, which is awesome. Uh, I get to travel [sound cuts in and out] world. Um, but in who knows? Five years from now, I could be sittin' in front of a computer...designing [sound cuts in and out] I'll answer that question another time. [a few people laugh] Fan5: I see. OK. Um...how 'bout, um...we know you're endorsement deal with Skechers that will run through December 2009. Ok, what is your signature style like, and are we going to see you more in this design scene? Or are you just going to keep in the music scene? Or are you going do it, like, as a sideline together with music? What are your feelings on that? David: Hmmm. Um...I'm always...I'm always interested in trying to find...new ways to get the music across. And...and uh...and so...ya' know, I don't know. I know with-- uh, with the last record, they let me kind of be involved in the art...concept for The Record a little bit, and...um...you know, the great thing about doin' graphic design is that I-- it, it parlays into a lot of different things. And so, um...ya' know I love, I love being involved in the visual aspect of the shows. Uh, which...it's kind of the same concept as tryin' to design something from scratch. So...um...so yeah, I don't know. I think uh...I think the sky's the limit with how we decide to incorporate visual and uh, and musical medium. Fan5: OK. Um, Ok. So now that you're a star, how does it feel to become such a huge role model? Does it scare you at all that now people look up to you? Do you feel pressured by all the responsibility? David: Yeah it scares me. Absolutely. I think um...you know, I, I...I have, I've probably changed more in the last year and a half than I think I ever have at any point in my life. Um...um... [pauses] ya' know, I got nieces and nephews that mean the world to me. And...uh, I got a little brother who...um...ya' know, who I love to death. And I, I, I would never want to... [pauses] make... [pauses] I would never wa-- I, I, I-- (A), I would never want to disappoint them, and (B), I would never wanna...to...put out some sort of a bad impression on, on their behalf. And kinda bein'...um...so yeah, I, I mean it's, it's pretty lofty. It's a huge responsibility. Um...but uh...I, I [sound cuts in and out] Fan5: Ok. Thanks. David: Thank you Fan6: Hey David. [crowd laughs]
David: Hello Fan6: Hi. Ok, uh, I was just wondering, um, In your album, what songs are most personal favorite, and, uh, how inspire you? I mean, the most. Which songs inspire you the most? David: Um... [long pause] my favorite songs...on The Record...uh...are all of 'em. Um... [a few people laugh] David: ...I, I, I am extremely proud of this record. I think just...just because...I feel like it's a record I would've made with or without American Idol. Um...as far as songs that inspire me...um...very recently, I ran a, I ran a...uh...a cancer charity [sound cuts in and out] in D.C. And uh, as we were walking to the starting line, they played um... [long pause] they played my song "Heroes." And uh... [sound cuts in and out] feelin' , like, gettin' the goosebumps from hearin' that. This song fits perfectly into this moment for me. And um...so yeah, actually, right now, probably "Heroes" is the one that inspires me. Fan6: Alriiiight. Ok, so um...what's your biggest fear in life and why? [long pause] David: What's the-- I'm sorry? Fan6: What is your biggest fear in life? David: Oh Fan6: Yeah. And why is that so. David: Fear in life. Failure is my biggest fear in life. Um...because... [long pause] I... [long pause] I, I don't wanna be-- I don't want to fail, and I refuse to fail. Um...ya' know, I mean...I guess I-- I guess I can say it this way: I, I, I'm OK with failing in small things, because there's no way that I could possibly win at everything. Um...I just don't wanna wake up one day and realize that...that I'm miserable and alone. Fan6: Yeah, it's like living your life in a foolish way. David: That was a really heavy answer. [crowd laughs] David: Eh, you know. Fan6: Ok, um...ok, tell me more about your future plans. And any plans to come down to Singapore?
Other audience members: Yes! Please come! [a few people laugh] David: Uh... [pauses] my future plans involve being happy and enjoying this-whatever this is. Um...whether it lasts...another day or another...twenty years, um...I'm gonna love it. So, uh...hopefully it's twenty and not one day. Um...as far as coming to Singapore, I was actually there this morning. Uh... [crowd reacts audibly] David: ...at your fantastic airport. Uh, um...I know, I know. They wouldn't let me out. Uh... [crowd awwws] David: So uh... Someone in the audience: Damn David: I will, I will have to come back soon. Uh, if uh, if the rest of Singapore is anything like the airport, I'm going to have a good time. [crowd laughs] Fan6: OK, I think that's all from me. David: Thank you very much. Fan7: Hi David. [long pause] David: Hi, how are you? Fan7: Hi. My name's Christian from the Sing paper. First of all, uh, congratulations. Your, I've heard that your record is gold in Singapore. [pauses] And uh, so here's a couple of questions. David: Ah, that's great! [crowd laughs] David: I didn't know that! Christian: Well, first thing-- well, first question is that, um...I was watching an episode of "Free Radio," and you were on it. And um...Lance was grilling you about being on American Idol [sound too low to hear]. And my question was, uh, if he cares about you as a person -- except for American Idol --
[a few people laugh] Christian: So...you know, being on that show. [laughs] David: Right, right. [long pause] David: Thank you. Um...I actually really enjoyed bein' on the show. Um...you know, Lance uh...Lance has his viewpoints, and um...we'll just-- we'll leave it at that. [Christian laughs] Christian: OK. You're currently on, on tour right now. So um...I was just wondering: Do you have any "Spinal Tap" moments? David: Oh, man. Uh...yeah. We uh...we actually got lost walking to the stage... [a few people laugh] David: ...uh...I'd say probably a couple weeks ago. And um...ya' know, it, it was funny, cuz my, my, my drummer Kyle is uh...is, is the youngest out of us. And uh, he hasn't seen "Spinal Tap" yet. Um, but he was the guy walking around, every time we'd take a wrong turn...screaming "Rock and Roll!" [crowd laughs] David: So, um...so yeah. Kind of...our imitation [sound cuts out] MC: Thank you. Fan8: Hi David. Hi, uh, I'm Joy. David: Hi Joy: I'm from My Paper. Um... David: OK Joy: [sound too low to hear, but question was likely regarding Adam's passing and how his family is doing] David: Thank you. Um...um...very well. And, and, and thank you for, for asking. I think um...you know, my brother fought a-- my brother fought his, his, his brain tumor and cancer for a very, very long time. And...um...so it was uh, you know, uh, very sad that he passed. Um, but also very relieved. I think um... [pauses] ya' know, I think he finally gets...rest. So, um...so yeah, we're good. Joy: [Sound too low to hear]
David: Um...ya' know, my, my, my brother is not with us physically anymore, and...and um...I think I was just [sound cuts in and out] talking to my manager as we were flying in here and... [pauses] Um... [long pause] Joy: Um...so, um... David: And that, and that's just happened. I mean, he was a-- he is a huge [sound cuts in and out] Joy: So who do you think is going to be the new American Idol for this year? David: Um...one of the three guys that are left. And... [crowd laughs] Joy: Do you think any of them have potential? David: I think they all have potential. Um...I think people that aren't still on the show this season have potential. Um...ya' know, but it is uh... [long pause] I, I think, uh--I think the true test is gonna see who's willin' to put in the work after they get off the show. But we'll see. Fan9: Hi again. Ok, David. Um...I'd like to ask you...uh... David: Hello again. Fan9: Hey. [laughs] Um...will there be a duet with Michael Johns in the works? [David and the Questioner laugh] David: Um...a duet would...[very long pause, possible loss of feed] would be in the same city, like, a day apart. And just miss each other. Um...I'm hopin' to catch up with him at the finale, and...I'll run that idea by him and see what he thinks. Fan9: Since you guys have such chemistry, um...I'm sure you guys would sound really good on a record. So, I think you should do that, like... David: Maybe. We both uh...we're both one-uppers. And so we'd probably just try to sing over each other. [crowd laughs] David: It might turn in to screaming by the end of it. [crowd laughs] Fan9: Alright, thanks David. Take care.
David: Thank you. You too. Fan10: Hi again. Do you-David: Hello again. [Questioner laughs] Fan10: Ok, um...Do you and your band have any rituals that you do before you hit the stage? [long pause] David: Uh...yeah. We do the whole...um, put your hand in the middle, and... [crowd laughs] David: ...say somethin' stupid. We change it up every night, so...um, and then uh...past that, I usually try to snag...probably like a half, half-hour before we hit the stage and just...think about what I wanna do on stage, and try not to worry about everything else goin' on in my life. Um...try to do that. Um...maybe stretch out if we have a big stage, so that way I don't pull a hammy. Um...that's really about it. I don't know, we're pretty low-maintenance. Fan10: Ok, thanks. Fan11: Hi again. Hi, um...for your next album, what do you want to do differently, and when can we expect it? David: Um...well, we're always workin' on...on new music. And um...and so...um...hopefully, uh...when things settle down, and...um...ya' know, we allow this record's time to kinda do whatever it's gotta do, um...uh, we'll start workin' on another record. But uh...as of right now, there's no schedule. Um...really wanna give this, this next record a little bit of time to, to uh...to flourish the way it's supposed to flourish. Um...so yeah, I don't know. I...hopefully, hopefully sooner rather than later. I will tell you it will be out...um... [pauses], uh, in the next...ten years. [crowd laughs] Fan11: OK. Thanks. Fan12: Ok, um...who has been your icon throughout your singing journey, and why do you look up to them so much? David: Um... [long pause] um...guys like Raine Maida from "Our Lady Peace," and uh, Lajohn from Sevendust. Um...those are guys I've always looked-up to as vocal [sound cuts in and out] so I think just because they...they're unique. Um...and, and I-- I had a chance to meet both of them, and they're just nice guys, which...is
huge...for me. Um...I, I think...I think they both represent kinda what I wanna be. And what I wanna do with this is uh...I wanna be somebody that, that people look at as...maybe a little unique. Um...but also somebody that's just easily accessible as just a nice guy. I, I...I um... [pauses] I never...want somebody to, to worry about approaching me cuz they're afraid I might be a jerk. [crowd laughs] Fan12: OK. Ok, thanks. David: Thank you MC: Last question! [long pause] Fan13: Hi David again [laughs]. Ok, um... MC: Just to repeat... Fan13: Hi. MC: Last question. David: Hello again. Fan13: Ok, yeah...how's the preparation for the Manila concert with David Archuleta, and uh, what can fans expect... David: Um... Fan13: ...from the concert? David: Um...well the preparations are great. Um...Archie and I both got in to town today, and haven't had a chance to catch each other. I'm gonna try to see if he wants to grab dinner. Um...that's pretty much all the prep...between the two of us. [crowd laughs] David: Um...what fans can expect, um... [pauses] uh... [pauses] uh, I think after uh, ya' know, after everything, especially with me, I think after everything that happened last week, I'm just ready to go back to havin' fun. And um...Manila will be a...a big part of that. So...lotta energy, lotta bad jokes... [a few people laugh] David: ...hopefully a few good songs. And um...I can guarantee you will not see me dancing. [crowd laughs]
Fan13: Alright, thank you so much. Fan14: Hi David. David: Thank you guys. David: Hi Fan14: Hi, um, ok. We'll take a quick picture with the winners . So I need you to look at the webcam and smile at me. Just one second, let me get the winners. [a few people laugh] David: Gotcha END OF INTERVIEW
