April 26, 2010 To: Writing Team Members From: Dominique Sabedra Subject: Proposal to Find Other Work for the
Arnold Staff Employees being transferred to Bings Café for the summer of 2010 I propose that the Arnold staff employees are placed elsewhere on campus where jobs are available and if there are no openings than UHDS should work to create jobs for these employees that are in the union so they may receive their forty hours a week.
Background Bings Café is located on campus in Weatherford Hall. Bings is open year round and during the school year it is open from 7:30am to 10:00 pm, ran by two staff members and nearly fifty students. During the summer the hours of operation are reduced and a handful of students who stay in Corvallis, and need to work for the summer to pay bills, continue to work with the two staff members. Problem Bings Café is part of the Arnold Dining Center located down the street. This summer Arnold is closing down for renovation. All staff employees are then being transferred up to Bings for the summer because they must receive their forty hours, according to union law. This pushes the eight to ten students out of the cafes door to fend for themselves. Many of these students have been working for Bings for over a year and have consistently worked over the summer. UHDS has proposed to a few students in open spots around campus. All staff that is going to be transferred to Bings Café have to be trained properly, as they have no experience. If UHDS were to use the staff in other job openings around campus instead of bringing them to Bings they would save money in training because it is not necessary to remove people from their job for under qualified employees. Feasibility If after extensive research it is not feasible to keep students at Bings over the summer I propose that UHDS helps the students find other jobs on campus.
Topics to Investigate In this investigation we will focus on the following questions: y y y y How much money will be spent training new employees? Has UHDS brainstormed any ways to keep the student employees over the summer? Are there other available jobs on campus for staff? What other dining services are open over the summer?
Audiences During this investigation there will be several different audiences. Our primary audience will consist of directors of dining services, the manager of Arnold Dining Center and UHDS Director Tom Scheuermann. Our secondary audience will consist of student and staff employees.
Methods Our research will consist of interviews as well as newspaper articles and the Oregon State University website. "Bing's Cafe - Housing & Dining Services - Oregon State University." Home Page for Oregon State University. Web. 28 Apr. 2010. <http://oregonstate.edu/uhds/dining/menus/bings.php>. "Restaurants Currently Open | Food @ OSU | Oregon State University." Home Page for Oregon State University. Web. 28 Apr. 2010. <http://oregonstate.edu/foodatosu/hours/>. "Staff Directory, University Housing & Dining Services - Oregon State University." Home Page for Oregon State University. Web. 28 Apr. 2010. <http://oregonstate.edu/uhds/about/staff/>. Interviews will be conducted on several student employees that have worked during summesr in the past. I will also interview two students who were planning to work this summer. Questions would include: y y y y Are you financially dependent on Bings over the summer? When did you find out you were not going to be able to work? Who informed you this? Did they provide information of other places on campus to work?
I would like to interview the manager of Arnold Dining Center, George Coulter, as well as the associate director of dining services, Rich Turnbull. Questions would include: y What kinds of renovations are being done to Arnold? y When did you find out Arnold would be closed over the summer? y Will Arnold be closed all summer long? y Did anyone take initiative to find other jobs for staff being moved to Bings? y How long do you feel it will take to train staff at the café? y Will you be training before summer begins? The last interview I would like to conduct would be with the manager of Bings Café, Carol Lenz. Questions will be similar to above interviews. Qualifications and Resources Here are strengths that I bring to this project: y I have worked at Bings Café for almost two years now. I know many people at Arnold and am used to seeing them on a daily basis. I have always spent the last two summers working at Bings, and was planning on working at Bings this summer.
