A Newsletter from Steve and Nancy Phillips

January/February 1992

Jn. 8:1

Vol. IV. No. I

Dear friends, family, and supporting individuals and churches.

As you may now be aware, on the mission field one must be ready for whatever
comes along, because few things are for sure, except for change. We try to be ready
daily for changes; changes in weather, changes in likes and dislikes, and changes in
plans. We are then, not surprised when these changes come. To put it simply, once
again we have had another change in plans.

In

our last few newsletters, we expressed our urgent need for travel

funds.

Thank you to all of you who responded quickly and with much grace in helping out.
However, according to the U.S. Government, we did not meet a requirement for Nancy's
permanent residency to continue. As it stands, she does not have her residency
anymore. For this reason, we will not be traveling as planned.

According to the Immigration Service, we can reapply for Nancy's permanent

residency at the U.S. Embassy here In Bogota, and probably get it approved within a
matter of weeks. That is a blessing to know, as it will be necessary for her to have
her residency so we can spend our furlough year in the states. Please be in prayer
as we now work to decide when that twelve month period will be.

So what are our present plans? Lord willing, we are going to get
settled in. We have been taking care of the Stringer house while they
are beginning a search for our own place to rent. Then we will need
furniture, and appliances, for which we have been saving over the past

of where we are going to begin the church.

We hope to be settled into our

own

place by June. This is for two reasons; the Stringer's return (around June 15), and
the due date of our baby (July 3-14).

Recently I have become more Involved in the work in the north end of Bogota.

travel there about three days a week to assist in calling, Bible study and planning
with Bill Longest.

Our need to stay for more time in Colombia is good as this

work

is just beginning to take off. We will be able to help a lot until this congregation
gains spiritual maturity and strength.

There has been a Bible study in the barrio of Santa Monica for a couple of years
now. There are around 17 believers who are willing and ready to begin Sunday morning
services. They have been attending various other congregations in the morning and
our Bible study has been meeting in the evening on Sundays. We are in the process of
renting a house where the church will meet.

Our stay will also allow us to get to khow another missionary family that will
be arriving in Bogota the first of June. Mark Dempsey and his wife Teresa (also a
Colombian) have been working with Team Expansion in Caracas, Venezuela. They want to
come and work with us in Colombia. They want to spend a few months here looking at

the work before spending their first furlough in the States, afterwards they plan to
return to Colombia.

We have been praying the Lord will sencjl more workers for the harvest here in

Pray for the George Gregory family that live and work in Pittsburg, PA.

The

John Martin family from Cave City, KY. is also considering coming to serve the Lord
here, though they have not yet made definite plans as to when. Pray for these

families as they will have many obstacles to cjvercome.

Another positive result of our longer sjtay is that of the birth of our next
baby.

We were worried about being able to paly for the birth in the States. This is

now not a worry, thank God. Also, Nancy's mp& will be able to be with her at this
important time in our lives, yet another blessing.

February 14, Jessica is one year and fojrteen days old and takes off walking

time. Now it is hard to get her to do anythinp but want to walk around by herself.

Nancy's pregnancy is proceeding well, pe is much bigger at four months now

than she was with Jessica. The doctor said it was because after the first pregnancy
the muscles are stretched and don't hide the pregnancy as in the first time around.
Her and Bill's wife, Janelle, are both expectjingl

Janelle is due about three

weeks

before Nancy. (Their son, Michael, was born pout three weeks before Jessica too).
Nancy and Janelle think they must be twins because they have many of the same likes,
dislikes, interests, talents, and this is the second time they are pregnant at the
same time.

I am feeling much better now and finally ^dapting to the culture. For a while I
was tired of everything about Colombia because it is not what I grew up with. Thank
the Lord, he has been patient with me, (Nancy has been very patient too). I am now
very excited about this new work in the North and am praying the Lord will show me

how to minister to the youth and still hav^ an outreach ministry in this new

congregation.

Although the change in plans effects our plans to visit family in the States, we

are happy about my parents desire to come see ijs. Lord willing, for a couple of weeks
in September. Please pray for them as they financially plan for this trip. We are

happy they will get to see their new grandchilcj at that time.
We want to thank you for your many prayers! ! ! I Many times we have faced
illnesses and pleaded in our newsletters for pur prayers. It is obvious that you

have been praying because we are doing and fpling much better. KEEP UP THE GOOD

We want to thank you for your continued support of our work. Without your help,
it would be impossible for us to be here. We pray you will continue to financially
uphold our ministry. Please pray the Lord will provide more of a support base from
which to work from. Now that we are going to be here for an extended period of time,
we will need work funds. We wanted to express this need in our visit to the states,
but

now we must share our need in this letter.

Remember to write us! One of the changes we would like to see in our mission is

more communication between you and us. Some of you have written and we try our best

to write back. We apologize for those to whbm we have not yet responded.

We now

have budgeted into our week a time for letter writing, so we promise to be better

about answering those who write. Please, takje a few minutes and drop us a note to
let us know what you think about our newsletter, our planned work, or just to say hi.
We want to pray for you too, but can't pray specifically if we don't know your needs.

Remember, many of you hold a special place injour heart, and it is sometimes sad to
think that from some of you we haven't yet received one letter in the year and a half

ANSWERED PRAYER
Though we did not specifically ask in our last newsletter for your prayers about our financial situation, it Is
obvious there were some of you praying. We were pleased to find that with a simple letter we could avoid
paying the 10% tax we were subject to when changing dollars. That was really cutting into our family budget!
Thank the Lord, he opened this door for us to be exempt.

PRAYER REQUESTS
Please pray for continued renewal of Nancy's strength and health. She has had some problems
for the last year or so, and we really need you to be in prayer daily for her.
Pray for the Dale Meade family as they re-adjust to life and work in Colombia.
Pray for us as we work on some promotional materials for our supporting churches, on the work
in Colombia.

NOTES OF INTEREST
** We enjoyed visiting with my (Steve's) parents when they recently made a trip to Colombia. They brought with
them a video camera and were able to fiim us, the church in the north, some scenery and Nancy's family. It was
a great two weeks to be with them after nearly two years.

'93 Team Expansion PATHWAYS is promoting internships to Colombia for this coming summer, if interested
in coming, or would like more information, contact Team Expansion, International Services, P.O. Box 4100,
Cincinnati. OH. 45204-0100. TEL (513)244-8149.
We have installed a FAX/Modem In the mission computer. Ron Kessler also has one in his computer. If you

would like to communicate via modem call Ron at 1-317-398-0285. Presently we are using the bulletin board
services of MISSIONS RESOURCE CENTER (9452 Winton Road. Cincinnati, OH. 45231. TELEPHONE. 1-800827-5663. FAX & Electronic BBS 513-522-2846.

Plans are also being made to connect with COMPUSERVE via just a local phone call. If that be the
case, it will be much cheaper and much faster to send mail electronically. If you have a computer with a
modem, we would like to hear from you If you are connected to COMPUSERVE too, or would like to be, send
your name and address to our forwarding agent.

*** In 1988 Steve served his Internship in Colombia under Dale and Jeannie Meade. The Meade family is now

back in Colombia after a time of furlough and study In the U.S.A. They are living in Villavicencio, working with
the church there. They plan to move around January of next year to begin a new work.
Please write, even if It Is just to say you've been praying for us and our work. Receiving mail is a real
encouragement for us. We miss you all very much. As mentioned in our last newsletter, our address is Steve

and Nancy Phillips (Jessica and Hannah too), Apartado Aereo 253.194, SantaFe de Bogota 8, D.C., COLOMBIA,
SOUTH AMERICA.

THANKS KCC for the T-shirt Hannah says "goo goo ga", which when translated into adult languange, then into
Spanish, then into English we think it means she loves it!

ENCOURAGEMENT fOR OUR MINISTRffiS

if you talk to ministers or missionaries, most ill tell you of the rewards of their work, if you talk longer
and get to know them even more, they might also shan with you some of the struggles involved in the ministry,
Every job has its' trials and difficulties, butfew rofessions are as affected as much as the ministry. Our
spiritual enemy knows that, and works extra hard to dis| ourage a person who ministers.
These trying times can come for many peopi (IE. elders, deacons, youth sponsors, Sunday school
teachers, choir members, or anyone involved in sorne inistry). They can also come in many ways. To name a
few of the more obvious ways; sickness, depression, e appearance of one problem after another at home or in
the church, inability to prepare well for your ministry d e to many distractions. Some of the more subtle ways
might include poor rest at night or negative thoughts a| ut one's ability to minister. Thoughts of "I'm just not cut
out for the ministry" may come to mind and begin one on a downv^rd spiral. Negative thinking produces poor
productivity in the ministry, which causes even more n ative thinking.
If not dealt with, each of the above mentioned could deal a disastrous blow to the Lord's work and his
servant. However, there are ways in which to find en uragement and mutual edification to move us forv/ard in
ouLministries.- The following are tested, tried and tru and we put them into practice in our work here. They
each require >vork and commitment on your part Take seriously, they can help you and your ministry too.

PRAY: When facing trials of many kinds remember what Philippians 4:6,7 says "Do not be

anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer ^nd petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to
God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ

Jesus."(NIV)

I
i

2.
ASK FOR PRAYER: Paul, in chains for his ministry, asked the brothers at Colossae for prayer
(Col. 4:2-4). If the apostle Paul, known for his great work in advancing the Gospel unto all the world, asked for

prayer, we most definitely need to also!

|
When we know others are praying for|us it encourages us. We feel a special strength, having
faith the Lord is going to be true to his vrard and answer the prayers of those lifting us up before His throne.

same road and can give us wise instruction as to how

4.
BURY YOURSELF IN THE WORD: Whether or not v/e can find a specific answer in the Bible to
our need is not virhat is in question here. What is important is feasting on God's word. By it
are renewed in
our faith (Romans 10:17)and the Spirit begins to move us towards an answer to our trials.
I

5.
GET INVOLVED WITH A SMALL GI^OUP: Our group is small. There are two of us. Bill
Longest and myself. Though small, our needs are being met We meet once a week to share how our Bible

study / reading time and prayer times are going. We t^en share our thoughts on our homework from the week
before. (We're studying from the magazine "Discipleship Journal" -Navpress) After that we talk about how we
have grown and what we have learned from these lessons.

We also share our prayer needs. We talk al^ut and find encouragement from talking about how the

Lord has been answering specific prayer requests. Wb make a commitment to be in prayer the following week

for our current prayer needs.

This time is very encouraging for us. After a v^ek of giving out so much for the ministry, it is refreshing

to sit down and encourage one another, ft is a time to give and receive from each other pieces of hope, and

faith, and love, as rf sharing a precious gem with a frjend. Because of these meetings together, we both are
refreshed and ready for another vreek of ministry.

We have found these five helps to be very effective. You are encouraged to put them to the test in your

own life and see if there are positive results. If they h^p you improve in your minist^ then they are well worth
the effort.

COLOMBIA, A MINISTRY OF TEAM EXPANSION

^ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS MAY BE SENT TO RON KESSLER.

NEEDS OF THE MINISTRY

Pray the Lord will provide an automobile for the v>rk. We really need a Jeep or a Mitsubishi wagon, or
something of the sort The roads and driving in Bogota are terrible. A big and a strong vehicle will better serve

the work... both in protection from injury in case of accident and in ability to transport people and supplies from
one place to another.

Another reason to have an automobile is for safety and time saving. Leaving the apartment, we can call
a taxi and have one at our door in about ten minutes. Getting home is another story. We have waited up to an

hour (with Jessica and Hannah in arms, and shopping bags in hands) just to catch a bus or a taxi, whichever
came first

As for security, travel at night in Bogota is less than safe. Last year, a missionary family was held up at
gun-point by a taxi driver and an accomplice! Then they were left to walk home in the dark!

If you, your church, or your organization would like to make a donation towards this very important need,
you can send funds (made out to Team Expansion) to our forwarding agent, Ron Kessler. (2701 S. Miller St,
Shelbyville, IN. 46176). Please note it for "Auto fund." Thank you.
