Self-Dehydrating Breathers SDB: How It Works

Normal Operation:
Air pass through only the main tank
Main tank fully absorbes moisture into the
air
Back up tank on stand-by

Once main tank silicagel is saturated

Solenoid valve switches the airflow towards
the back up tank
Back up tank fully absorbes moisture into
the air
Once the regeneration process in the main
tank is completed, the solenoid valve
switches the air flow back to the main tank

Why Silicon?
Dan Windmar, Vice President STRI, Chairman IEC SC36C Insulator for
Substation
Hydrophobicity
Greek term meaning fears water
Ability to forms water droplets on the
insulator surface instead of water films

Mechanical strength
Elastic and stable over a wide
temperature range

Polluted Enviroment
Comply with P4 or e class : designed
to satisfy most demanding conditions

Ageing withstand
No ageing effect on hydrophobicity
