Gazette

It is a reality and the government is
well on it’s way with preparations
for the merging of Greater Tubatse
Municipality and Fetakgomo Local
Municipality after the Local Government Elections on 3 August this year
(pending court cases about the voters’
roll et al).
This is the same map of the
proposed ‘marriage’ Platinum Gazette
published on 10 July last year. Nothing has changed and the Sekhukhune
District Municipality, as the driver of
the process, is now calling for name
and emblem proposals (see page 2
of the newspaper) for it’s new super
local municipality (among the others in
the district).
Fetakgomo will add 13 wards to
Greater Tubatse’s existing more than
30 wards, while almost 95 000 people
will be added to the 366 000 people in
Greater Tubatse.
A total of 48 primary schools and
31 secondary schools will be added
to Greater Tubatse’s 163 primary
schools and 92 secondary schools,
while 14 clinics will be added to Greater Tubatse’s 23 clinics.
According to documents of the
Sekhukhune District Municipality 91
municipal employees are currently in
the employ of Fetakgomo and 237 in
the employ of Greater Tubatse. How
the structure will look after the merging, remains to be seen.
Greater Tubatse’s seat is Burgersfort, while that of Fetakgomo is
at Apel. A long distance away from
Burgersfort if you want to travel by
tarred road.
There you have it, now just think
of a name and an emblem …

Ohrigstad hit-and-run
claims a life.
Any information?
The Police at Ohrigstad are investigating a hit and run case following the discovering of a
body of a man lying alongside the R36 Ohrigstad-Hoedspruit road +- 500 metres from the
Burgersfort R555 T-junction in the early hours of Monday morning 2016-04-11.
The body was discovered by passersby and the police were immediately informed. At the
time of going to press the Police did not have any information of what happened, but they
suspect that the deceased must have been knocked over by a vehicle during the afternoon
of Sunday after a drinking spree with his friends because of the nature of injuries sustained.
Only the aerial of an unknown vehicle was found at the scene. Shattered pieces of glass on
the scene were also taken for further investigation.
The Ohrigstad Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can assist
them to arrest the person who committed this crime to come forward or contact Ohrigstad
Police at 013 238 0205.
The Police say continued support and cooperation of each community member is needed
to curb crime and to expose criminal activities in their communities. Any suspicious activities
or suspicious persons can be reported to the nearest police station or anonymously to crime
stop line at 08600 10111.

It is autumn and the Aloe fosteri plants are in full bloom in many areas. This photograph was taken near Ohrigstad on Saturday.
The Aloe fosteri is indigenous to the area and is sometimes also called Foster’s Spotted Aloe. It is listed by the
Encyclopedias of Living Forms as originating in the Drakensberg Mountains in the Ohrigstad, Lydenburg and
Roossenekal Districts. The plant’s flowers range in colour from red, scarlet, orange, red-range and bright yellow.

Traffic Burgersfort style
Social Media is a powerful platform. It gives
the public the opportunity to raise issues, ask
questions and expose possible wrong doing.
Platinum Gazette followed up on questions
received from readers with regards to parking
habits of the local traffic officials as well as
traffic control in heavily congested streets
where deliveries are often blocking traffic to
add to the pressure on the system.
Mr Thabiso Mokwena from Tubatse Municipality explained why local traffic officers
park the way they do: “Why are the officers
are parking this way? - Traffic Officers are
expected to park in the designated parking
areas like all other motorists visiting the mall”.
“Do they officers have permission from the
Tubatse Crossing Mall to do this? (see photograph to the right) - Yes, traffic officers are
classified under emergency services and as
such are allowed by the Mall management”.
About allegations on social media that these
officers are taking bribes and licence disks
from motorist he said: “These allegations
have not been brought to the attention of
the responsible authorities before. Should
members of public experience such, the
matter should be reported to the Office
of the Municipal Manager or the Director
Community Services since the Municipality
has adopted a zero tolerance to corruption.
The Municipality distance itself from such
corrupt activities. The Municipality is also in
a process of establishing the anti-corruption
hotline for members of the public to use while
reporting such.”
Another headache for motorists are delivery
trucks blocking the roads to off-load. About
this Mr Mokwena said: “Municipal traffic officers have intervened on numerous occasions
by issuing tickets to drivers who are contravening the law. Officers on duty are constantly doing patrols in and around town. Complaints can be directed to the Office of the
Municipal Manager at Greater Tubatse Local
Municipality (013 321 1121) or the Director
Community Services at (013 231 1190).
The Municipality is currently in discussions
with some businesses in the area that are
operating businesses that are not in line with
the land use management scheme.
There it is, they are at work to try and make
things better, now the motorists must just
cooperate...

Claire Graham, Henry Knoetze, Alyza Kleynhans, Joane du Plessis en Simoné Gouws het die kursus bygewoon.

Reward
Photographs are often posted on social media with a variety of comments. The public can follow the channels set out in the column to the
left to bring those contravening any rules to book. The public should
also remember that traffic officials are not always subject to the same
rules as regular motorists (to make communication and mobility easier in emergencies), e.g. they are allowed to talk on a cell phone while
driving and do not always have to wear a seatbelt.
