Greenlights has nurtured its membership and developed a close relationship with the nonprofit community in Austin. In doing so, Greenlights has met the needs of many nonprofits via its many services. In continuing this tradition, Greenlights is developing an online community as a way to extend the resources available to the nonprofit community in Central Texas. Greenlights would like to create an online community that further builds the community that we have developed through our face-to-face forums. We want this community to contain components that cultivate a feeling of connectedness for Greenlights members to the nonprofit community in Austin. Greenlights has named their online community the Greenlights Nonprofit Exchange because it creates an immediate association with the notion that users will get something in return. EXPECTATIONS Based on information gathered from other Online Communities, there is a general rule 90 - 9 - 1 rule regarding online communities: • • • 90% of the users will be completely silent; only observing content. 9% of the users can be expected to comment or contribute from time to time. Only 1% of users can be expected to post very frequently.
This means that based on expected users in the first year (est. 1200), 1080 users will solely observe content, 108 users will comment and engage from time to time, and approximately 12 will be fully engaged on a regular basis. Obviously numbers vary from site to site but these numbers are an indicator of the average online community. It is also worth noting that the 12-15 highly engaged users could be responsible for up to 55% of the content generated by users.
