SUN PROTECTION POLICY

RATIONALE
This policy is designed to protect children and adults at angelcare from the harmful effects
of the sun and wind which can lead to skin cancer.

PURPOSE
To protect children and adults in our preschool from the damaging effects of the sun and
wind by using the appropriate protection.
To encourage and educate adults, children and families to recognise the long term effects of
exposure to the sun.

GUIDELINES / PROCEDURES

* The centre will ask parents to provide sunhats for the children to wear.
* Teachers will ensure that children are encouraged to wear sunhats outside when necessary.
However, there will be a designated space covered by shade cloth in the preschool where
children can play outside without a hat on. Parents will be advised about this policy on
enrolment or transition from the nursery.
* All teachers will be encouraged to wear sunhats outside when necessary.
* Sun block approved by the N.Z. Cancer Society and/or meets N.Z. standards will be applied
before the children go outside in the morning, after lunch and after afternoon tea.
* It is the parents' responsibility to inform teachers of allergies and provide an alternative sun
block.
* Infants under the age of one year will be encouraged to keep out of the sun at all times.
* Management will provide sunshade over the sandpit and the water play area in the pre-school
outside play area. Also over a great part of the nursery outside play area.
* Teachers will encourage parents to dress children in clothes that cover their shoulders and
preferably the backs of their necks.
* When in the paddling pool or under the sprinkler, children will have sun block applied to all
exposed parts of their bodies and as soon as they are finished or at the discretion of the
teachers will be changed out of togs and into their clothes.
* Teachers and management will endeavour to provide continuing education to all parents and
children at the preschool through newsletters, displaying Cancer Society information and
informed discussion.
* Sunhats and sun block will be enforced during terms 1 and 4 as per Cancer Society
recommendations
