A. Course Summary & Goals:
Summer Undergraduate Human Anatomy and Physiology is an interdisciplinary, eight-week course
covering the anatomy & physiology of the major systems of the human body. This course is
specifically designed for students interested in the health sciences who need a strong foundational
understanding of how the human body systems work both individually and in concert. The course
format involves didactic lectures presented four days per week, as well as an online laboratory
component. The anatomy & physiology of the whole body will be covered in two courses (ANPS
019 & ANPS20). In ANPS 19 we will focus on cellular biology, the skeleton, the nervous system,
the muscles, and special senses. Special note: The final exam for ANPS 019 will be held on
Monday, June 20, 2016 at 9:00 am (which is also the first day of ANPS 020). The first lecture
on ANPS 020 will begin after the ANPS 019 final exam.
B. Course Learning Objectives:
1. To provide a common anatomical and physiological language for communication within the health
science community.
2. To provide basic information about the microscopic and macroscopic structure of tissues and organs
of the human body.
3. To develop knowledge of the anatomy of the human body by studying how the structure of an organ
system relates to its function.
4. To understand key physiological principles which regulate normal organ function.
5. To understand how different organ systems work in concert to facilitate normal body functions.
6. To understand how alterations in normal organ function leads to disease.
C. Course Resources:
1. Lectures: All lectures will be presented in Rowell 110 from 9:00 am 1:00 pm, Monday through
Thursday. An electronic copy of lecture handouts will be made available through Blackboard, and a
black & white photocopy of the lecture slides will also be available as a handout in lecture. Students
are responsible for information presented in lecture, appearing in the lecture notes, or assigned by a
lecturer. It is highly recommend you review the lecture notes prior to lecture. This will help you get
familiar with the terminology and concepts that will be discussed in class.

2. Textbook: Human Anatomy & Physiology 10th Edition, 2016 Marieb/Hoehn (Pearson) will be
used for both ANPS 019 (Fall) and ANPS 020 (Spring). Individual lecturers will provide appropriate
sections to read in preparation for lectures. The textbook is recommended, but not required for the

component that accounts for 1 credit in this 4-credit course. Laboratory assignments, lab materials,
and self-study materials will be accessible through Mastering A&P. IF YOU HAVE ALREADY


PURCHASE ANOTHER ACCESS CODE, but you will need to re-register for the Summer ANPS
019 website in Mastering A&P. If you have not previously enrolled in ANPS at UVM please make
sure you purchase a personal access code to Mastering A&P, as we will assign graded homework
and laboratory assignments through this platform. This access code is included in all of the textbook
packages offered for this course at the UVM bookstore (you will find it shrink wrapped with the
book). You may also purchase the access code separately from the Pearson Education website.
Detailed instructions to register for and log into Mastering A&P will be provided in lecture and on
the Blackboard course page.

4. Blackboard: The ANPS Blackboard page is an online resource for accessing course policies, lecture
material, worksheets, practice quizzes, grade postings, lab instructions and material that arent on
Connect. We will also use the Blackboard website for all announcements and course updates.

5. Podcasts: Audio recordings of lectures will be released as podcasts and uploaded to the Blackboard
site. These podcasts are provided as a courtesy, and should not be used as a substitute for attending

Evaluation Policies:
1. Lecture and Laboratory Exams: Four (4) non-cumulative exams (90 minutes) will be given in
Summer ANPS 019. Each exam will consist of 60 multiple-choice questions drawn from lecture
material and 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from lab material. The lecture and lab components
of each exam will be graded separately (see Grading Policy below) and exam scores will be posted
to your gradebook in Blackboard and can be seen under the My Grades tab. For specific content
covered on each exam see the course schedule. Separate Scantron answer sheets are used with the
exams and only answers that are correctly filled in will be graded. Questions about your exam
grade and requests to review the exam should be directed to the Course Director, Dr. Sean Flynn
within one-week of grade announcement. Exams will not be scaled and no extra credit options
will be offered

2. Graded laboratory assignments: The required online laboratory component includes laboratory
exercises and graded lab assignments, accessible through Mastering A&P for each lecture block
(see the course schedule). You must complete the lab assignments before the deadline posted
for each lab assignment in order to receive credit. Specific instructions for each graded Lab
assignment will be posted on the Mastering A&P website and may include PhysioEx laboratory
simulations, PowerPoint presentations, videos, or study modules in the practice anatomy lab, PAL.
This lab assignment is open book you may use any of your materials to answer the questions, but
you must complete it before the due date. There will be a bonus for scoring 80% or higher on each
lab assignment. Any student that scores 80% or higher on their assignment, will receive a grade of
100% for that lab. If you score less than 80%, your grade for that lab will be the score you earned
answering questions. There will be no scores dropped for the Laboratory assignments. The best
way to earn a good grade for the lab portion of the course is to start your lab assignments early in
the week so that you have plenty of time to engage in the learning materials and to answer the

Late submission penalty for homework assignments: Each lab assignment will have a published
due date or deadline for submission any assignment submitted after the deadline will incur a 1%
penalty for each hour the assignment is late. There will be no bonus grade bump for late
assignments. All students are responsible for ensuring that their assignment is submitted in order to
receive a score for the lab. Students who need extensions on lab assignment deadlines because of
documented illnesses or injuries, hospitalizations, or other documented emergencies should contact
the Lab Director as soon as possible to avoid the late submission penalty.
3. Grading Policy: Your final course grade will be calculated based on individual performance on the
four Lecture exams, four Lab exams and the laboratory assignments as follows:

-------------------4. Missing an Exam or lab homework assignment submission:
Make-ups for missed lecture exams will be made available only to the student who proves with
documentation that s/he is unable to attend scheduled exams AND has a legitimate reason for
rescheduling an exam. Severe illness requiring students to be away from school and family tragedies
are all qualifying reasons for rescheduling an exam. Vacation plans, minor illness, work schedule
conflicts and social functions are not qualifying reasons for rescheduling an exam. Students
should contact the Course Director prior to the date of the exam if they will need to reschedule an
exam. Students with sudden emergencies will need to document the reason for an absence.
Extensions for submission of lab assignments will be granted following the same rules described for
scheduling make-up exams above.

F. Where can you find HELP?

Help can be obtained in a variety of ways. Please avail yourself of any combination that works for you.
Please, don't fall behind. Students who wait until the last moment to study invariably do poorly in
the course. The Course Directors and Lecturers are here to help, and want you to succeed. They are
your primary point of contact should you have questions regarding the course material. If you have
questions ask promptly before or after lecture, make an appointment with the lecturer, or attend a
scheduled review session. Contact lecturers directly to schedule time to meet and please understand that
all of your lecturers have other teaching and/or research commitments; so do not wait until just before
the exam. Review sessions will be offered prior to exams to give students an opportunity to ask

Suggestions for Succeeding in ANPS

1. Attend Lectures: Students who dont attend lecture usually do not perform well in this class. They also
miss important class announcements and clarifications.
2. Be respectful of your classmates: Classes are for you to listen and learn, and the lecturers are trying their
best to make the material understandable for your benefit. If you come to class and socialize, you may be
asked to leave the room. Turn off all cell phones before entering the classroom.
2. Listen and Take Notes: Turn off your cell phone and tune out your friends so you can get the most out
of class. Bring your lecture notes to class so you can make notes in the margins and highlight areas stressed
by the lecturer.
3. Use your textbook: If you did not understand something covered in lecture, use your textbook as a
reference source. Look up key words in the index, and read that section of the text. Find key diagrams
stressed by the lecturer and read the corresponding explanation. The textbook is an excellent resource, but
sometimes covers material at a different depth than the lecturer.
4. Study every day: The expectation for college students is that they spend 3 hours of study time for
every hour of lecture. Spend this time by reviewing the lecture notes and textbook, and making notes of
key vocabulary. Dont wait until right before an exam, and then study for 24 hours straight and expect to
learn the material! This course covers a tremendous amount of new vocabulary, and can seem like you are
studying a foreign language. If you wait until the last minute to study, you wont have time to master the
vocabulary, let alone the concepts using that vocabulary.
5. Dont wait until the last minute to start your lab assignment: The labs are designed to give you an
opportunity to spend time with the material in order to learn it. The lab assignments involve various
resources (videos, physiology exercises, APR modules) that should be studied before the graded homework
is completed. Dont skip through your assignment quickly just to get your assignment points. Time spent
with lab material will help you learn concepts that will be covered again in the exams.
6. Find some friends and study together. Students who work together usually do well you find out what
you dont know by explaining it to each other. Working in a group also helps keep you motivated to stay
current with the lecture material.
