Annotated Bibliography
Abandoned Reform School. Web log post. Chasing Carolina. 26 Feb. 2011. Web. 12 Feb.
2016.
This source is an online blog that tells of someones personal experience while visiting
the Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center. The blog includes historic information of the
facility and how it was started. Along with her experience and historical background of the
center, she also included photographs she had taken on her visit. She says, As I walked around
the now empty campus I could almost hear the long ago voices of the boys whisper through the
courtyard. She gives us very detailed thoughts of the old campus, as well as detailing what her
pictures include.
I plan on using this blog to gain some of the historic background of the old facility. Also,
the pictures they include in their blog could be a very good visual for our presentation. The
pictures are not only the exterior of the buildings, but also what the buildings contain inside.
Chasing Carolina seems to be a popular blog site. There were many comments under
many of the blogs. The blog I read that pertained to my topic of the Stonewall Jackson Training
Center included many great facts of information. The information I read in the blog is consistent
with many other sources I have looked into, so I believe the blog is very credible.

American Urbex Exploring Americas Gritty History. American Urbex RSS. Web. 18 Feb.
2016.
This source is a website article that gives very detailed history of the Stonewall Jackson
Youth Development Center. It includes what the school offered the boys. It says, Development
for boys at the school included a healthy mixture of academics and labor. It continues to list a
few of the programs the school offered to the boys who attended. The article also attaches a few
pictures and a video clip of the school. The clip attached to the article gives further details of the
schools past and offers great insight to my topic. The article ends with how the school began to
change and eventually began having empty buildings.
I plan to use this source to further explain how academics and labor were used within the school.
This also can be used to compare how the education and labor aspects have changed at the

Massey 2
facility over time. I would like to also talk about how the schools buildings began to change
over time, and eventually became abandoned.
This source includes very credible information about the development center. The video
and pictures are very well developed and provide reasonable information that correlate with the
article. The website also includes other sources I may be able to use, which will be very useful in
my future research.

Coleman, Jonathan. Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center Celebrates 100 Years.
Independent Tribune. BH Media Group, Inc., 18 Dec. 2009. Web. 13 Feb. 2016.
This source is an online newspaper article that talks about the Stonewall Jackson Training
Center celebrating its 100 year anniversary. However, the article included very good historical
information of the school and buildings that make up the campus. It also includes words from the
Youth Development Centers principal. As long as we are guided by what is right in the best
interests of the students, we can't go wrong," principal, Peter Brown said. The article gives some
memories some of the staff have shared with the school. The memories they share are about their
time in the past when the worked on the campus.
This source is going to be used to show comparisons and differences of how things used
to be at the detention center to how things are now. Also, the article provides good historical
information about the students and teachers at the school, which I would like to include in our
presentation. I would also like to include some of the principals words and how he sees the
school in our presentation.
After reading the article in the Independent Tribune, the information given seems to be
accurate. They have quotes others words and experiences with the school. This newspaper is
respected in the Cabarrus region.

Eury, Michael. Concord. Charleston, SC: Arcadia Pub., 2011. Print

This source is a book that discusses the history of Concord. It talks about many of the
important figures who contributed to the city. Also, it talks about the four Concord schools, one
being the Stonewall Jackson Training School. It talks about how the school was begun and a
little bit of its history. The book talks about some of the programs the school offered for the boys
to take. Along with the information the book includes old pictures of some of the boys who were
held at the reform school. Along with the boys, there is also a picture of the school as it was
when it was first built.

Massey 3
I want to use this source by possibly using the pictures the book gives so I can show how
it was back then. The picture of the school will be good to use when comparing it to how it looks
now.
The book, Concord, is full of great information about the city and its environment. The
author, Michael Eury, has written many reference works about the history of comic books. Its
obvious he is very interested in the history of certain works. He provides very accurate
information in his work.

Hawfield, S.G. History of the Stonewall Jackson Manual Training and Industrial School.
Concord, NC, 1946. Print.
This source is a book that gives very detailed information about the school. Hawfield says,
This book has grown out of the universal feeling of the need for a history of both the
establishment and the operation of the Jackson Training School in North Carolina. He talks a lot
about the foundation of the school and everyone who was involved. Hawfield also says, One of
the most interesting features of this publication is the fact that it traces the change in the
conception which the public has had of a training or correctional institution. He talks about the
evolutionary process of the school and how people think of the facility.
I plan to use this source for many different reasons. I got some great information on the
establishment of the school that I did not already know or had read somewhere else. Also, I plan
on using Hawfields book by sharing with the class what people really think of the school and its
purpose. Along with other peoples opinions, I want to also share Hawfields opinion of the
school and what it really is. Most importantly however, I want to share the evolutionary process
of the school and where it is now compared to where it was then.
Hawfields book is a great source and is beneficial for me and my topic. There is not a lot
of information on Hawfield, but by reading parts of his book I can tell he has done his research
and knows a lot about the school and its establishment. Also, I can tell he cares a lot about the
topic, which makes his words much more valuable and credible.

Knox, Michael. Historian: Save Stonewall Jackson School Buildings. Independent Tribune.
BH Media Group, Inc., 16 May 2014. Web. 13 Feb. 2016.
This source is an online newspaper article that talks about saving the remaining buildings
at the Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center. The article talks about the impressive
architecture the buildings contain. It gives Peter Kaplans opinions, the author of The Historic
Architecture of Cabarrus County North Carolina. Kaplan says, I believe these buildings can be
saved, Kaplan said. They lend themselves to new uses, such as apartments or offices. Both

Massey 4
uses could employ historic tax credits to obtain private capital for historic preservation. They
say the buildings can be saved, however, they are wanting to take away the historical importance
of them and change them into apartments or offices.
I plan to use this source in our presentation of the school because this gives someones
personal opinion of the school. This gives good insight into what people want to do with the
buildings in the future. It also shows people dont see the buildings as important to history,
which will also be a good thing to share in our presentation.
The Independent Tribune is a respected and good source. The information the newspaper
relays is accurate and they give quality information.

NC: Stonewall Jackson School of Reclaiming Human Character. | Alternative. Before Its
News. Before Its News Inc., 11 Jan. 2015. Web. 18 Feb. 2016.
This source is a website article that gives a good amount of historical knowledge on the
Stonewall Jackson Training Center. It includes how the school was created and who helped
create it. It talks about the help of the Kings Daughters and other organizations that helped
begin the development center. The Kings Daughters, womens clubs, other organizations and
Honorable James P. Cook of Concord were largely responsible for stimulating the Legislature to
make an initial appropriation of ten thousand dollars to provide a place for training the socially
unadjusted boys of the State. Not only does it talk about the beginning of the school, but also
talks about some of the funding the school has received.
I plan to use this source by talking a little about the history of the school, but more so
about the creation and all of the people and organizations that were involved. Also, I want to
share where some of the funds for the school have come from in our presentation.
The website, Before Its News, seems to be trustworthy with its information. It provided
me with great facts of information about our topic and not only restated some previous
knowledge I had about the school, but also included things I had not heard of or known.

Stonewall Jackson Training School. Stopping Points Historical Markers and Points of Interest.
Web. 29 Feb. 2016.
This is an online source that features some great historical markers and points of interest
for travelers. It gives a good description of the school and its historical background. It talks about
how now the men who are held there are much more violent offenders than in the past. It says the
majority of those who are there are related to drug and weapons-related offenses. Also, it talks
about the preservation of the buildings. In 1999, a fifteen-year battle between the schools
administrators and historic preservationists over several of the institutions buildings ended.

Massey 5
School administrators agreed to help preserve some of the oldest campus buildings if allowed to
demolish other derelict buildings on the property. This shows that the school does value the
historical buildings that makes up its old campus.
I want to use this source to talk about how the youths there today are much more violent
than those who were held there in the past. I want to compare the crimes they are committing
today to be admitted to the development center to what they were committing before. Also, I
want to talk about how they fought to preserve the old buildings on the land that make up the
historical and original Stonewall Jackson Training Center.
This source comes off as reliable, especially since it is used by many travelers who are
looking for places to stop by and visit. Not only is it beneficial to travelers, but also to anyone
who is just wanting to research more about the facility. It offers accurate and detailed
information concerning the location of the center.

Tomberlin, Jason. Re: Stonewall Jackson Training School. Web log comment. North Carolina
Miscellany. 27 May 2010. Web. 12 Feb. 2016.
This source is an online blog. Tomberlin attached a picture of juveniles in the fields
working at the detention center. However, the blog includes great comments from individuals
who they themselves attended the school. The first comment is by M. White, which says, I was
in SJTS for 2 years 98 & 99. I have many memories some horrible and some not so bad. He
shares some of his memories at the school, whether they were good or bad. Along with M.
Whites comment, many others also included their personal experiences and times at the
detention center.
I want to use this source to give some other peoples point of view of the school. This
article supplies me with many stories from individuals who actually attended the school. This is a
great source to share with the class in our presentation. I want to give insight to what the school
was really like when these individuals were there, and possible compare their stories to how the
school is now.
The blog, North Carolina Miscellany, seems to be a very reliable and credible. There are
hundreds of comments under many blogs. People obviously stay up to date on the blogs and
always give their feedback, which is great when it comes to my subject because I am given a lot
of amazing sources.

Youth Centers Called Unsafe; Audit Finds Danger at Detention Centers; 3 New Buildings
Urged. Winston-Salem Journal [Winston-Salem, NC] 8 May 2003: B1. Infotrac
Newsstand. Web. 2 Feb. 2016.

Massey 6
This source is a web article talks about some of the youth centers are being called
unsafe within the NC system. Specifically, the article addresses the dangers and problems of
the facilities. Not only does the article talk about the dangers of the centers, but also what the
juveniles in the centers have done to get themselves there. Twenty percent of the juveniles in
the youth-development centers were found delinquent of the most serious felonies, including
first-degree murder and rape; 65 percent committed such felonies as involuntary manslaughter,
assault and burglary. This article supports the idea of making significant repairs and renovations
to the detention centers.
This article will be used to describe some of the poor qualities of the Stonewall Jacksons
Training Center. Also, the article will be used to help explain what the youths did in order to end
up at the development center.
Nclive.org is a great source when it comes to research. Also, it is very reliable and holds
true information that can be used to expand our knowledge. Along with nclive.org, the WinstonSalem Journal is also a good and respected source.
