WHAT’S HAPPENING
■ Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church which is hosting a spaghetti dinner to benefit the Meals on Wheels Program at the Mecosta Senior Center from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26. The cost is $8 for adults; $3 for children ages 6 to 12; and free to children under 5 and younger. Take out dinners will also be available that night. There is supplemental funding from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for this benefit dinner. Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church is located at 9407 90th Ave., in Mecosta. For more information, call (231) 972-7891. ■ An AARP Driver Safety Program will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on May 11 and 13 at the Mecosta County Commission on Aging in Mecosta. The classroom course helps older drivers become more aware of the changes in vision, hearing and reaction time due to aging and how to adjust driving accordingly. There are no tests. The class is taught in two, four-hour sessions over a two-day period. The course reviews basic rules of the road and the typical types of violations that occur with older drivers, such as failure to yield the rightof-way, improper left turns and entering and exiting expressways. Tips are given to improve these situations. The state of Michigan passed legislation encouraging auto-insurance companies to grant seniors (50 years and older) a discount on their auto insurance payment for successfully completing a qualified course in driver safety. People who take this course meet this requirement. Consult your insurance agent. For more information or to sign up for the course, call the Mecosta County Senior Center at (231) 972-2884. There is a $12 fee for AARP members and $14 fee for non-members. The fee helps to pay for materials. Calling also provides organizers preparation time for those attending. ■ Dances are being held from 7 to 11 p.m. the third Saturday of each month at the Mecosta VFW. The dances are open to the public and cost $5 admission. The Lost Country Band plays during the dances. The dances are being held to promote something fun for young and old. Food also is available. For more information, contact Deb Stieg at (231) 972-1953. ■ The Mecosta County Rod and Gun Club holds trap and sporting clay shoots every Saturday. Trap shoots start at 10 a.m. and sporting clays start at 1 p.m. The club is located four miles west of Mecosta on M-20. For more info: Contact Jack Hays at (231) 592-1587. For more activities, visit www.mecostarodandgunclub.orgdish to pass. Please call (231) 660-0180 to RSVP. ■ Knitting circle will begin meeting at 4 p.m. on Fridays at the Barryton Public Library. Knitters of all levels are encouraged to come and learn or share knitting techniques. ■ Morton Township will be starting a recycling program, on the third Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Canadian Lakes Fire/Rescue Station located at 8260 100th Ave., Stanwood.

Motorcyclists: Be prepared, protected
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Summer is around the corner and thoughts of riding around town on a motorcycle may have crossed your mind. Whether you just bought a motorcycle or are a veteran rider, you might have a few questions about protecting your bike. What’s liability insurance? Do I need Comprehensive insurance? How can I make sure my custom chrome is covered? Here are some tips that can help you navigate your motorcycle insurance policy and feel confident you’ve made the decision that’s right for you. Pick the Right Insurance First, determine how much insurance you’re required to have. Most states require liability insurance, which covers you if you cause an accident injuring another person or damaging someone’s property. When picking your liability limits — the maximum an insurance company will pay in the event of that type of claim — a good rule of thumb is to review your car insurance and buy a policy with similar limits and deductibles, according to the experts at market-leader Progressive.

Once you choose liability limits, you may want to add insurance protecting your bike. Collision covers damages from accidents while Comprehensive covers damages caused by incidents like fire or theft. If you buy Collision or Comprehensive, you’ll need to select a deductible, the amount you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket if you have a claim. Be sure to pick an amount you can afford.

Insure Custom Parts If you’ve added some serious chrome to your bike, gotten a custom paint job, or installed a GPS, consider additional accessory coverage. For example, Progressive usually includes $3,000 in accessory coverage when you purchase Comprehensive or Collision coverage. You also can buy more coverage up to $30,000 worth. Roadside Assistance If you like taking long rides into the country and are worried about breaking down in the middle of nowhere, consider Roadside Assistance insurance. For more tips or to find a local insurance agent, visit motorcycle.progressiveagent.com.

The wedding has passed and it was a wonderful experience; however, sickness set in this month and threw off my workout schedule. Even though the medication I am on has made my weight fluctuate upward, I am determened not to let it get me down. I feel stronger and my back has not given me any trouble since I started my Curves workout. Now it is time to set a new goal. I have my sights set on that new bathing suit! Rita has a strong will and a strong heart! Even though she had a minor setback with an illness this month, she is not letting that overshadow her outlook. She realizes that setting smaller goals leads to long term change. Keep the winning attitude, Rita!

Some of you may have noticed those “artifacts” in your digital photographs. Usually they are round, white spheres. I first noticed them when we traveled to Egypt. Some of the flash pictures had these orbs in them. I disregarded these things initially as dust particles on the lens. Lately, however, we have become aware of some research that shows that these orbs may actually be more significant. It seems that the now popular digital cameras, especially the cheaper ones, are able to record some infra-red light. The better cameras have infra-red filters and often the orbs are not seen with them. The theory is that light from the flash is absorbed by the orb, then accelerated within the orb and spit back out at a different wavelength. This is called fluorescence, much like the “glow in the dark” items we are familiar with. So, the big question is, what, if any, is the significance of these orbs? There are many theories about these things. Some people feel they are just dust, bugs, or pollen particles that have been caught on the photo. Most people, who have studied them, think that the orbs are not artifacts. Some feel that these may represent the energy of angels or the spirits of people who have past away. That is somewhat hard to prove, but interesting to think about. So experiment yourself. Take some flash pictures, then get really quiet and invite more orbs to come into the room. Then take some more pictures. Many times there will be many more orbs present. There are no indications that this phenomenon is harmful in any way. We do have some videos at the Healing Center that show some of the research, if you are interested. Anyway, have fun, and take lots of pictures. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Our pet of the week this time around is a kitty named SugarBabe who is just one of the many dogs and cats available for adoption at the Montcalm County Animal Shelter in Stanton. SugarBabe is an adorable grey tiger kitten who’s looking for just the right lap to spend the rest of her life curled up on. She’s about 4 months old, weighs only 2 lbs or so, and is desperately looking for a new home! Her shelter ID# is 10/04/21 Many other cats besides SugarBabe are available to be adopted, and plenty of dogs too. Go online to:

www.petfinder.com/shelters/montcalm.html
